Game Recommendations?

Alas, despite investing thousands of hours into DDO, with each update I fall further and further behind. From the day Monster Champions were introduced, my ability to make progress was devastated. Reaper Mode left me completely in the dust. I intend to continue playing DDO, especially new dungeons, but am ready to move on to a game where I can actually make progress and am not relegated to third class citizen status.

I am not a gamer but really enjoy the energetic play of DDO. I very much enjoy a good story with strong role play elements. I hate games that force me to follow a set path, or play a particular character, or feature a story that messes with my character. Could any of you recommend something that fits that description? Old games and old graphics do not bother me. I would love to play a game with other people, one where I can actually contribute, but solo is fine. Any ideas?

It's single player... but it's got great story, and super immersive. And, it doesn't have a lot of recent Bethesda-isms bogging it down.
Still probably the best fantasy-setting game I've played. I find myself replaying it often, even though the graphics are dated.


As for MMOs... Honestly, DDO has kinda hit the sweet-spot for me. I haven't found another one that appeals even half as much. The only other one I (infrequently) play is DC Universe Online. But, it's very much a set-path - even if you have a fair choice of paths to take. You pick a Hero/Villian mentor (Batman/Lex Luthor/etc), a weapon (lots and lots of those), and a Power (again, lots). After that, you are on-the-rails for a good while. But, the stories are very pulpy/super hero, well written and voice acted. It's a good diversion when I need to take a break from DDO but still want to scratch the MMO itch.

If you want to get away from a "I'm logged in", Morrow Winds will take you where you need to be.

Elder Scrolls 3 is fun as hell if you go deep.

Hey, yeah I have great memories of that game. Try to avoid reading the cheats and hints for as long as possible as they can ruin an excellent game. I dont know how long I played that game, I almost want to try it again. I probably have the old CD's around somewhere.

A game I play when taking a break from DDO is Total war rome. Its not RP but I find it the right kind of break. Strategy games are one of my things also.

I do agree about the getting left in the dust. It just seems the difference between the haves and have nots is kinda enourmous. I am somewhere in between, seeing people zerg a whole heroic life in a day! I could not even run fast enough to keep up!

Thank you, gentlemen. I purchased Morrowind last week and am giving it a try. Slowly. I always have a hard time getting into new games. It never occurred to me to look for cheats.

I sometimes try games like Nibblers but they tend to bore me very quickly. I wish I knew how to make games. I would just make my own.

And Morrowind isn't a game that holds your hand - it takes a while to master it's systems. But, with some time and a build you really click with - it just unfolds and keeps unfolding.

Oh I loved Morrowind, I got the Game of the Year Edition that included all the extra story. I loved picking flowers and mushrooms and becoming an alchemy master. And the in-game books, read the books; some of them include clues, some have history about the world and NPCs, some are just funny.

If you're into zombie survival, you might want to give State Of Decay 2 a try. I have a blast playing it.

TR your main and park her/him at level 4 as 1 rogue/3 monk handwraps with Improved feint, TWF etc. Just stay there a while (a few months) and run harbor/marketplace quests, especially on reaper. You will encounter a lot of new players while re-running familiar content, a lot of which is fun and not so boss-endgame heavy as later stuff. It is also stress-free.

gear is easy: bracers of wind, frozen tunic; ideally, some Pirate stuff that is so good at level 4 (Brawling gloves, Buccaneer ring, trinket), the mimic belt and a couple of crafted things.

A few I'd recommend checking out:

Pathfinder: Kingmaker - relatively recent release, I've been having a lot of fun with this recently
Fallout: New Vegas - IMO the best of the fallout games, primarily due to Obsidian's writing
Jade Empire - slightly different setting, excellent story
Alpha Protocol - a couple of issues, but modern-day setting & incredibly responsive to your choices
Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magik Obscura - needs the community patches, but an underappreciated masterpiece.. great writing & a really interesting setting
Vampire: Bloodlines - another Troika one, again it needs the community patches & has some great writing
Divinity: Original Sin 2 - fantastic combat system, loads of alternative ways to approach a situation & while the 1st is great (though the story isn't as good) there's no real need to play it to get straight into this one

My experiences with Reaper Mode have been rather awful so I avoid it.

About six months ago I started making Epic Daily groups with my Avatar but, having not made a single friend, gave up on that.

Back in December I leveled all 10 of my characters to 20, figuring I could join Epic Daily type groups with some different classes, but quickly realized they cannot survive, even on Epic Normal Difficulty, without a healer. As best I can tell, I am one of the very few people who heal and go back to help people.

I tried going back and running quests for Favor but after about 1,000 Favor I lost interest.

For a few weeks I went looking for oddball items like the Royal Guard Mask and Ring of the Ancestors. That was fun but I felt like I was wasting time as I really have no need for such things.

I even tried collecting DDO Points for the sole purpose of purchasing Cosmetic Items but it was a very slow process. I am just not capable of making fast Favor runs like EllisDee can.

I am looking forward to the Ski Jump, Ice Skating, and Anniversary. Those will keep me happy for a while. I am most happy when I have new things within reach to collect.

I've heard good things about Guild Wars, and then there's also Star Wars Old Republic. Never played them, far too happy w/ DDO, and neither has the same "try for free" model that DDO has. :/
