In an effort to improve the general understanding of the game for new players (and old alike!), I want to list out as many pieces of useful, and worthwhile information about the game - esoterica, if you will, that isn't entirely obvious to people, except perhaps to those who have been playing a while. I'll add as many as I can, and everyone else can feel free to add others as they think of them.
- If you want to separate a stack of items in your inventory, hold down ctrl, and move the stack to an empty space. A window will then prompt for how many you want to move out of the stack
- You can buy multiple things from a vendor at a time - just ctrl-click the item in the vendor's list, and choose how many you want to purchase.
- Each area in the game will offer a discount when you complete certain quests. For example, completing waterworks will cause harbor vendors to offer a discounted rate. Other such quests include Scoundrel's Run in Three Barrel Cove, Shan-to-Kor in the Marketplace, and the Delera's chain for House Jorasco. If you want to make more money, buy things from vendors who are willing to give you a discount.
- The pawn brokers in House D, K and the marketplace don't randomly generate items - they resell items sold to them by other players. If you don't see what you want at a marketplace broker, you can switch to a different instance to get a different list of items.
- The end reward you get from completing Misery's Peak is a one-time reward - choose carefully.
- Con is NOT a dump stat. What this means is that no class should neglect their constitution score. It can make a huge difference in survivability.
- You can Shield Block (or Block with whatever you are holding) while tripped. I have also seen a successful block animation effect while blocking during other helpless states but can't quantify. Dancing, Held, Stunned, Dazed, Hypnotized, etc. I know for a fact that I have blocked while under these effects at one time or another. Just made a mental note.. Always, always, always block when helpless
- The Bluff skill can be used to pull one mob away from a group of mobs without aggroing the whole mob like ranged combat does
- Diplomacy is also a useful skill for healers and casters to to try to convince monsters to stop attacking you. Though, it doesn't work on every monster, oozes, constructs, and undead, for example.
- Stoneskin wands and 20 Resist pots can be bought in the Twelve stores. Also repair critical wands, which are not available in the guild vendor.
- You get a free feat change token just by completing Lockania's quest in the marketplace.
- To display an item in the chat window, ctrl-right click on the item. It will paste into whatever window you have open. If that happens to be the guild chat window, you can preface it with a /p to put it into Party chat. Or, you can preface it with a /g to put it into guild chat.
- /death kills you. It can be useful when you want to get back to your bind point quickly. Note: there is no such command as /death count
- /quest will show you your raid timers.
- "/quest completions" will show you how many times you've ran all the raids in the game which allow for special end-rewards. The "You've completed this adventure x times" in the quest can be inaccurate.
- the /resloc command will show you where you are currently bound.
- Never buy a quiver or a medium-sized ingredient bag from the auction house. They can be bought at vendors. Medium bags can be bought in House J for about 8,000 plat. Quivers are sold in the harbor from the vendor near the bank. People put them in the Auction House because a sucker is born every minute.
- Be careful when turning in collectibles - some of them are worth FAR, FAR more in the auction house because they are used in crafting. For example, Vials of Pure Water, Silver Flame Hymnals, and Lightning Split Soarwoods are highly sought after, and can be sold for lots of money in the auction house.
- ctrl+F1 will auto select the first option in a dialog box (i.e. holding ctrl and taping F1 really speeds up getting quests out of windbags). this also works for F2 = second option, F3 = third, etc = etc... (actually i just realized this is a really good idea for making a macro for litany boss selection...)
- /death will take you to your bind location, which may be the quickest route depending on where you're heading too (hint, the twelve, your airship). Beware that this can cost you some repair money, but if you /death from a tavern, you do not incur these costs!
- Bards - some of your songs are on a different cool down timer (depends on your prestige class) - the gist being that if you order your buffs correctly you can be constantly rocking out (read: getting your buffs out faster)
- Adamantine ore is acquired from the quest Relic of a Sovereign Past. See the Lost Quest Guide for details.
- /alias add ;q /quest
/alias add ;qc /quest completions
Now when you type ;q or ;qc it will do just the same as if you typed /quest or /quest completions.
Also it is a permanent alias on your character, you will not have to type the whole /alias add thing again, unless on a different character.- The F1-F12 keys can be used to select a party member without manually targeting them. F1 is always your toon. Very handy for giving out buffs and healing.
- Hitting the Tab key will target the next nearest enemy.
- Hitting the T key will toggle mouselook on and off.
- CTRL+= Will lock/unlock your hotbars. You can have up to 20 hotbars. Drag your feats/enhancements/spells/items to the bar you want it on. CTRL 1- xx selects the hotbar, hitting 1-10 will activate that slot on the corresponding hotbar.
- Using the Q key will let you search out items/levers etc in a quest. Hitting E will use/activate whatever you currently have targeted. (by default).
- You can turn off the chat filter (adult language filter) in the esc|options|gameplay option by unchecking the box at bottom of list. Do this at your own peril!
- A good trick to make reading party chat easier is to move the loot channel to its own separate chat window.
- Right click on the party tab, select create new tab.
- Rename that new tab quest or loot
- right click, select incoming text, uncheck everything but loot (and uncheck loot in the party tab)
- right click, select outgoing text check party
- You can customize all of your chat tabs this way, including dragging them off by the chat tab, and dropping new ones into separate ones to create a new chat dock.
- another useful chat filter is to move your guild chat to your party chat window, so you can see what your guild is talking about, while you're in a party.- Be sure to turn in your favor rewards when you get them. Many of them are very useful.
- You can get Cure Serious Wounds potions in House Jorasco.
- The level 3 arcane scroll vendor is in magic shop in house P (and only the level 3).
- Two-weapon fighting will have a harder time hitting at low levels due to the -2/-4 hit penalty on each weapon (depending on whether using a light offhand weapon, or have the oversized two-weapon fighting feat. Thus you're often better off using a 2-handed weapon or going sword and shield.
- Get the highest +Haggle item you can, and put it on before selling. Keep it in your hotbar next to its replacement item. Be sure to unequip it when you're done!
- Without any two-weapon fighting feat, you aren't even swinging your 2nd weapon 80% of the time, even though the animation shows it moving.
- Resist Energy spells can be dragged individually to hotbar slots, saving much hassle.
The same applies to wands/scrolls, and other spells/items that offer multiple casting choices.- When swimming or jumping through the Mario/Tomb Raider parts of the game, it helps to use Mouse-look mode. Also if swimming without water-breathing/underwater action, you can drink Cure potions quicker than you drown.
- Many spells/attacks/traps can be dodged.
- Everyone gets the Trip feat for free, it often works best on enemy casters.
- I like to set up my keyboard bindings so that the 'R' key is assigned to Trip, and ` (tilde) is assigned to stealth.
- When swimming, there are many things you can't do, but one thing you can do is equip an underwater action item. Just remember to keep one in your hotbar.
- While sneaking, the number of eyeballs next to your character show you how "visible" you are. The more eyeballs, the more visible you are. This number will also adjust when you enter brightly lit areas - so if you want to remain hidden, stay in the shadows as much as you can.
- The Jump skill has a limit to how useful it is. Any more than about a +15 base jump is a waste.
- The Swim skill both makes you swim faster, and allows you to hold your breath longer.
- It's a good idea to un-map the "R" key for run. It's too easy to accidentally hit it, and then fall off a cliff, or jump into lava. Move it far away.
- You can drink healing potions while underwater. A tactic I use often to avoid my solo/hireling wipes is if I lose my healer (hireling) and I get low on health and have a pool I can dive into, I will turn and run like a little girl being chased with a snake to that water and swim deep, under a ledge or whatever and pot heal/buff up.
- You can trade more items than the trade window displays. Just drop them in after the slots are filled and a scroll bar appears.
- If you're having trouble clicking on something, or are looking for a lever, hit your Backspace key to cycle through things. Typing 'u' will use (open, pick up, talk, etc.) what is selected.
- Enemies generally have a greater ability to hear you sneaking than to see you, so if you're planning to use sneak a lot concentrate more on MS.
- It's generally not worth spending a lot of skill points on either of Hide or Move Silently, unless you have points left over and no where else to put them. Sneaking can be useful if you're alone, and there are a small number of quests where it is valuable due to quest design, but it will rarely be used when you're in a party.
- The miss chance from clouds such as cloudkill work on purple names, even if they have true seeing.
- The Toughness Feat unlocks Enhancements that further increase your HP when you spend the AP *amount varies on class and race*
- The /stuck command can be used once per day to get you unstuck if you can't move.
- /emotelist and /help commands list a lot of useful emotions and information
- Use your middle mouse wheel to zoom in and out to get a better view of your surroundings.
- The game can be played using a game controller. If the controller functions under Windows the DDO client will recognize it.
- If there's a room full of mobs that you'd prefer to pull one at a time, get someone with a low Hide/move silently (plate-wearers are a good choice) to slowly sneak towards to closest mob until it starts looking around, then back up towards the party. The mob will follow, looking around for the source of the noise. Bluff will also do this.
- When swimming, try to avoid underwater ladders. Touching one at the proper angle causes the game to think you'd rather climb out than swim out...climbing taking much longer (even at a low swim skill) and therefore using much more air.
- Take off your armor to swim if you need extended time below the surface.
- Use your jump button & backward movement button to hop off of a ladder when speed is needed to reach your party. Careful, falling can cause damage.
- Joining a guild that rises to certain levels can give you access to discount vendors as well.
- Sliding down a slope while falling can minimize or even negate damage that would have been taken from that same height. Many in-game surfaces are angled as opposed to sheer drops.
- You cannot SEE the damage that others are inflicting over targets and they cannot SEE your damage over targets.
- The auction house lists auctions by the hour, not by the minute. This prevents "sniping," but forces players who are focused on winning an auction to be present for up to an hour at the auction's close. If you sort by duration, the AH will list items first which are ending the soonest.
- The auction house window (as well as the general chat window) update immediately when you've been outbid on an auction, but the remaining hours listed do not always update in anywhere near real time.
- Winning an auction will not appear in the auction house window. It will appear in the general chat window, but if you miss that, a visit to the mail kiosk sends you your win. This is important because a player watching an auction house window for up to an hour at an auction's close will not know that s/he has won if solely focused on the auction house window. Since the auction house timers do not update automatically, the winning listing remains on screen without changing for some time. Logging out and back in can update remaining times at the auction house.
- Player or character names are not listed in the auction house.
- If you use the auction house to sell, DDO takes a full 30% of the coin earned when someone wins your auction. Calculate that into the amounts for which you wish to sell your items.
- Set your MyDDO profile to public if you wish guild members, friends, your party, or other players to be able to find details on all your characters in one place. Otherwise, folks looking for that information would have to look up each of your characters by name one by one. This comes in handy when deciding on what kind of new characters to build.
- In the friends tab of the social window, characters logged in appear with a green dot alongside, characters not online appear with a red dot alongside. Friends are characters, not players, listed by first name only. Take advantage of the comment feature here. You can use it track people's alts, for example.
- you can use the myddo browser to display any page you want right in the game without alt-tabbing. Including but not limited to youtube links of people showing how to speedrun a quest for example. *hint*
To do so, open myddo ingame, click admin --> links and add new ones. They will display on your myddo home in a separate links tab.- If you are a dex based AC character and you have a medium load it caps your dex modifier at 3 for AC.
- If your client gets choppy/laggy during melee you may want to enable the setting "Turn off all combat chat feedback". When it is on, you lose the ability to view blow-by-blow details in your Combat window.
- You can only trade a maximum of about 2,000,000 plat at a time.
- Using invisibility lowers/delays/slows down progression of dungeon alert (DA).
- You can just hold down the attack mouse button for multiple swings of your weapon.
- Grabbing a ladder works like a parachute and stops your fall without losing hp. Descending ladders is always faster (esp for the long ones) this way. Use jump while descending to let go and facing the ladder push forward as you reach the bottom.
- FF items should be placed in your hotbar, alternate putting the item off and on and you can speed up long falls.
- Enough ranks in tumble allows you to speed up movement when an area (or spell effect) slow you down. This INCLUDES the defender stances from prestige. It also has the added benefit of increasing how far you can fall without taking damage.
- The higher your tumble the further the animation movement, and the animation always takes same time, meaning with enough tumble ranks you can use roll to keep up with faster players
- Check the AH before selling an item to an NPC. There are a lot of items that are in high demand by high level, rich players which make no sense to new players. There are items you can get very early in the game that sell for 1000´s of plat, but which an NPC will happily buy from you for 23p.
- You can drag your spell components to a hotbar to help you keep track of how many you have left. Probably works for rogue tools too.
- You can make custom emotes (without the animation). For "(emote) stoerm is hungry" I'd do /emote is hungry
- DO NOT stand on your stone if you die. DO NOT wander away from your stone if you die. Stand NEAR but not on it. If someone is trying to rescue you from a mob, they need to find and grab your stone quickly. Teams get killed trying to find or rescue a stone when approaching a quest wipe.
- You should have a variety of weapons. A wooden/ooze bane set for ooze and rust monsters (most people know this), ghost touch weapons for wraiths and ghost (I don't see this as often) blunt weapons for skeletons and ranged and/or melee just in case - regardless of your build (rangers shouldn't rely on the bow, melee fighters shouldn't rely on the sword).
- You can display the number of seconds you have remaining on the cool down timer on your hot bar, it is an option under UI settings.
- You can assign any hotkeys you want to task bar slots and those hotkeys will work even if the task bar is not visible. Its a great way to get your spells and abilities off quickly and easily and saving task bar space.
- Hirelings can cast raise dead underwater.... If you die underwater call them to you and have them raise you up...
- Hirelings can be told to use your soul stone, this will cause them to pick it up. Then run to a shrine and they will follow you. They can even open doors for you if commanded.
- When you want to use an object while under attack by archers/anything else, a hireling can often use it for you without being interrupted.
- Rogues who have aggro can easily regain their sneak attack thru several methods: bluff skill, diplomacy skill, improved feint feat, or my favorite: switch targets and start whacking something else.
- Protection from evil and magic circle against evil give a minor buff to saves/ac vs. evil creatures, but also makes you immune to enemy spells like dance and command. It's a big advantage against enemy crowd control spellcasters.
- Dismiss dead hirelings or hirelings with no heal juice left. Wait 5 minutes (and go to entrance if not gold seal hire) and the hireling comes back all healed with a full blue mana bar. You can do this as long as the hireling's remaining service time allows.
- If enemy casts Blade Barrier and you are near or in the blades, stay still and you won't take damage.
- If you summon your hireling to you while you are in mid-air, they will instantly teleport to you. This is often faster than if they have to run through the dungeon themselves, and ensures they avoid traps. It's also instantaneous. You can accomplish this by finding something higher and jumping off while you summon them.
- The shield spell will block magic missiles. It's a self-only spell, but if you can find an item with clickies of shield on it, it can be worth its weight in gold, especially when running quests like Proof is in the Poison, where the spellcasters often favor this spell.
- Augment Summoning not only works on your summoned creatures, but also on your hirelings. If you can't break a door or activate a rune, let your hireling try if you have Augment Summoning, as they have pretty high stats this way (+4 on every stat).
- Greensteel blanks only bind on equip. Tier 1 (and above) greensteel items bind to CHARACTER.
- If you DO accidentally sell something you can go to the buy back tab to get it back, but you have a limited window of opportunity to do this. It doesn't matter where you do the buy back from - all vendors share the same list.
- You can have the same Friend's List on all your characters on the same account without rebuilding it. Use the "Export" button at the top of your list on one character and then use the "Import" button on all your other characters to create the same list.
- You can press B to loot all items in a chest instead of clicking on the "Loot All" button.(default key map setting)
- The purple collectible bags you see lying on the floor - all players in your party see also. When you pick one up, it does not remove the purple bag that others see. Everyone has their own purple bag. So, don't feel that you are being greedy by picking them all up!
- You can write in party/whatever else if you are stuck on the loading screen. Just press Enter before typing to advise you are stuck.
- If you turn your character sideways, your firewall will be vertical instead horizontal
- Certain quests have levers that require ranged weapons to trigger. To activate these levers, switch to your ranged weapon (any will do), then turn on mouse look. Target the reticule over the lever, and fire. You'll hit it every time.
- When you upgrade certain enhancement lines like Cleric Divine Vitality II, or Barbarian Improved Power Attack II, for example, be sure to replace the enhancement button in your hot bar! Otherwise, you'll continue to use the previous enhancement, and won't get the benefits of the new one.
- Items that you drag out of your inventory and choose to destroy will show up on the Buy Back tab at most vendors. If your inventory becomes full halfway through a quest you can destroy some stuff to make room and buy it back later.
