last 30 days 261 player average on steam. If the answers to this poll are representative of the average player base then the number holds. Now there are a lot of assumptions but the numbers are from the last 30 days (real 30 days) and the replies to this poll. Even doubling though woudl give us an average of less than 3500 players a day, that is kinda frightening even at that rate.
I was talking about the linked telent data Sam posted in the 2nd post.
You might have Steam data but you can't draw conclusions from those.

Edit: And this poll is not representative at all.

average <> peak. Those are two different things. Average is 260. Peak is 500. 500/.15= 3333 peak users across all servers. Which is roughly 476 per server at peak. All of that assumes the .85 is representative. I kinda doubt that. I think that the 10%/90% is more accurate, but who knows for sure. The forum poll probably has a +/- 10% reliability factor to it. The sample size is small, the sample is probably not representative, the sample relies on self reporting, and there is no ability to prevent voter fraud (socks).

You do understand that concurrent/peak users are typically only around 5-7% of your actual customer base, right?

That are some interesting numbers , assuming thay they are close to reality. They do make almost as much money with just 1 expansion as they do with a whole year of VIP subscriptions. Incoming expansion in 3, 2, 1...

Axel has a nice video about the new Oracle data that came out.

His estimate was ~40k players, comparing that to mine of about ~65k from when this thread was posted a year ago.

Without new players DDO will go the way of the dodo.

    EDIT:

Dark Age of Camelot (an even older MMO) has about the same concurrent players as DDO and they're continuing forward in good health.
If we use the same fraction of 'peak concurrent user' to 'active player' then DDO has 67,200 players, and LOTRO has 201,600 'active players.'

    link for data
DAOC is not in good health, all but 1 server are shut down. It has a remnant of population mostly waiting for Marc Jacobs next incarnation to launch.

Edit - just realized this was a necro thread, but the statement applied a year ago as much as it does now.

So has the OP and friends accepted that Steams data is wildly useless for this game, or they still trying to hand wave it?

I mean 15 Yes vs 67 No, that's such a large difference that even a semi biased sampling population would support that non-steam is far more common then steam.

Now putting my geek hat on. Over the years I've been called upon to fix innumerable MMO client related issues with friends, linkshell mates, guild mates, clan mates and whatever else brothers want to call themselves these days. Every time someone was using steam it made the process 10x more difficult and my recommendation was always to remove the steam client and install an independent client if possible. It's just how Steam handles dynamic application homes and installation, greater probability of something going wrong during an update on older MMOs. I use steam a lot, I love it for keeping my saved games synched across all my PC's, I would never use it for an older MMO that was created before or outside of the Steam ecosystem.
