Probably. I asked something similar in the past. I was given slightly different information about it at the time, but the general gist of it was thus: A lot of the old goods (scales, collectibles, etc) were just item X in the database, so your bank might show it has Y quantity of item X. Along the way they changed their system to account for dupers more readily by also giving every single little piece it's own unique ID tag as well. Given how much lag we already have when opening banks and managing things, think how long it might take to go through and parse your thousands of units of things just to give you a nicely 'sorted/stacked' list like you want. Every single time somebody goes to open their bank, for any little thing.
