Default Spyglass trinket needs descriptions for skills boosts

The spyglass has exceptional astute and prudent skills but that means nothing to me without looking it up. It needs to be clear what skills are modified (int/dex/wis?).

    Astute = Int

    Prudent = Wis

The U39 Lamannia, versions had those Descriptions for anyone that wanted to know what the "missing" text looks like.

    [U39] Lamannia (ML 4) Treasure Hunter's Spyglass

Hopefully, those bonuses for the [U39] Treasure Hunter's Spyglass are being calculated correctly this time. Given that I noticed the armours were colour-blind and showing Red Augment slots and some of the other items looked skew-whiff with their descriptions; it was obvious something had gone awry. Therefore I thought it would be far safer not to touch anything on that list until the items were repaired or replaced with the 'corrected' versions.

Currently the '[U39.1] Treasure Hunter's Spyglass' is still missing the "Exceptional" Astute/Prudent bonus, descriptive text.

The armour Augment Slots now seem to have been "corrected". Therefore I will assume the "Spyglass" descriptive text changes were not planned for: Update 39 Patch 1 Hotfix. :-)

FYI, I'm a newbie of 1 month. I happened across this thread, and I have a question. Do the Exceptional bonuses to the skills listed stack with Enhancement bonuses that are typically given with other items? If so, this trinket would be of great value to my L5 Mechanic, seems almost too good to be true to this newb! My questions is then, was this a quest end reward, and if so, where did you get it? And if not, where did you get it!?!

    Thanks

Different bonus types stack with each other. The same bonus type won't. Exceptional and enhancement bonuses stack as would profane, mythic, quality, etc. Two items with enhancement bonuses won't stack and you will just get the higher of the two stats. As you can see from this page on ddowiki, there are many bonus types: http://ddowiki.com/page/Category:Bonus_types

Thanks. I did not know there were so many bonus types. Based on my experience so far, item bonuses that are other than Enhancement have extra value, at least at my level (L5) where almost every item's bonus is of the Enhancement type.

So I did sleuth a bit to find that the Spyglass is a reward in Crystal Cove, and that Crystal Cove is some type of limited time quest. How would I go about entering that quest? I would love to get advice on the best path towards obtaining the spyglass, keeping in mind that I solo.

    Thanks again!

Crystal Cove ends on the 12th, so you'll need to do it before then. There is an NPC in the harbor that will take you there, or you can go to the Hall of Heroes. There is an area with 3 portals that take you to seasonal events. The left one has a skull and crossbones and will take you to the event.

I solo a lot, but I don't recommend soloing Crystal Cove. I can manage it because I have practice running challenge types of quests. I've seen players who are veterans but that don't run challenges get frustrated with the event because it is timed and you can fail if you don't do well enough. So in this case, I'd recommend grouping.

If you need help understanding the event, I'd look it up on ddowiki or have a guildmate/friend show you the ropes. It's much easier to explain vocally and hands on than in writing imo.

Edit: This isn't to say the event is hard. It's very doable in a group. But it isn't easily soloed when you are inexperienced.

Thanks Gywiden. I really want that Spyglass, but the Crystal Cove sounds ill-suited for me. My biggest problem is time, I just don't have that much to dedicate to DDO. I could conceivably pull off 8-10 hours from now through Aug 12th, at best. My window for playing is limited to 9PM-midnight PST. I sometimes have to step away from the game mid-quest. So I've been a soloist so far. I am also a flower-sniffer, if I understand the use of that term here correctly. I don't know if getting the Spyglass is worth 4 hours of play time, in my mind. What I am willing to do is spend (not unlimited) DDO points on some things that make the limited time I have available to play more valuable and fun. So something like the Pirates Grog could help. Is it possible to buy the Grog, run a quick batch of Harbor-only quests, and then trade in dubloons for the ML4 Spyglass. Or is it necessary to enter the Cove? There are a lot of moving parts to this (map pieces, gems, dubloons) and it sounds like a time-intensive grind to get to the end result.

Could I not just solo it at an easier level, say Level 2 for Level 5 Mechanic? Is the problem that I would I never get enough loot to get my Spyglass after putting in 4-5 hours at that rate? Thanks again for the advice.

Consumable event items can be bought with doubloons only. Equipment requires gems and dragonshards that are only found in the Cove quest. To put it in perspective though, a level 4 spyglass isn't going to be super valuable for long. So if you're concerned about time investment, it isn't going to hurt to skip the event.

I think I just realized something. The image posted above of the ML4 Spyglass might be an "upgraded" spyglass, not the basic ML4 Spyglass. I found a page on DDOwiki that describes tiers of upgrades for each item needing more gems and dragonshards to achieve. I was considering a run to get enough dubloons and pyrites to trade for the Spyglass, but I was assuming that everything listed, including, the +3 intelligence, was part of the deal. If I need to climb tiers on the item to get all of the benefits by farming more and more gems and shards, that makes it a more daunting task and less worth the time investment. The answer is probably just to put an hour or two into it and see if I am acquiring loot at a rate that makes my goal achievable before the thing ends on Sunday.

    Thx again

The wiki does not have the new loot on it. The new items, such as the Spyglass with Exceptional skills, has only one tier and does not need to be upgraded

DDOwiki is outdated on this point. They just updated gear in Crystal Cove, and they no longer have tiers. Once you get it you are done--no upgrades.

Thanks! I'm going to look into it tonight. If anyone can provide the cost of the Spyglass ML4 to me, I'd appreciate it. I hope it still involves zero dragon shards

You can get your Spyglass solo and here is how:

    1) Acquire a Treasure Compass.

1A) Purchase a Treasure Compass from the Game Store.
    OR
1B) Purchase Pirate's Grog from the Game Store. Enter a quest with lots of living enemies like Kobold Assault. Drink the Pirate's Grog and kill monsters until you obtain 100 Gold, 200 Silver, and 400 Copper Doubloons. Collect extra Doubloons if possible.
    OR
1C) Purchase Pirate's Grog from the in game Auction House. Enter a quest with lots of living enemies like Kobold Assault. Drink the Pirate's Grog and kill monsters until you obtain 100 Gold, 200 Silver, and 400 Copper Doubloons. Collect extra Doubloons if possible.
    OR
1D) Ask in game for someone to give you some Pirate's Grog. Enter a quest with lots of living enemies like Kobold Assault. Drink the Pirate's Grog and kill monsters until you obtain 100 Gold, 200 Silver, and 400 Copper Doubloons. Collect extra Doubloons if possible.
    OR
1E) Warning: Extreme danger for low level characters. (Use an Iconic Character if available.)

Go to the docks area of Stormreach Harbor. Find Sailor Calatin, standing near the Leaky Dingy tavern. Talk to him to travel to Crystal Cove.

You will arrive on a dock next to a ship. The ship contains the entrance to the Crystal Cove challenge but first, you need a Treasure Compass.

Find the Rook's Gambit tavern near the dock. Go inside and talk to the Spirit Binder. Due to the high danger of this step for low level characters, you will probably end up returning to the tavern more than once.

Leave the Rook's Gambit and skirt the island, looking for a path inland. Once you find such a path, head deeper into the wilderness looking for pirates.

Pirates spawn near player characters with a Challenge Rating approximately equal to the level of the closest player character. Taking a swing at a pirate 'activates' him or her. Once active, a pirate will attack until slain. If a very high level player character stands near a very low level player character, a pirate may spawn with a Challenge Rating appropriate to either character. This means you may accidentally find yourself swinging at and activating a high level enemy. With time, you will learn to identify the Challenge Rating of a pirate by his or her appearance. As a general rule, the bigger the pirate, the higher the Challenge Rating. If you accidentally activate a powerful pirate, run. The pirate will eventually 'White Dot' and disappear. The biggest threat comes from high level spell casters. If it looks like a spell caster, leave it alone until you know what you can handle.

Run around in the wilderness killing pirates. Collect 100 Gold, 200 Silver, and 400 Copper Doubloons. Once you have enough Doubloons, head back to the docks and board the ship.

    2) If you are not in Crystal Cove, go to the docks area of Stormreach Harbor. Find Sailor Calatin, standing near the Leaky Dingy tavern. Talk to him to travel to Crystal Cove.

    3) Board the ship right next to your arrival point. This contains the entrance to Crystal Cove but it may not be open. Players must collectively donate 500 Map Pieces to open the entrance to Crystal Cove for 40 minutes.

3A) Wait for other players to donate enough Map Pieces to open the entrance to Crystal Cove. Warning: Extreme danger for low level characters. Griefers will intentionally drag high Challenge Rating monsters to the ship. If you stand there, you may get killed. You may wait inside the Rook's Gambit tavern until the entrance to Crystal Cove opens. An event notice in your chat will announce when this it happens.

3B) Warning: Extreme danger for low level characters. Head out onto the island and kill pirates, collecting Map Pieces and Doubloons. To help open Crystal Cove, head back to the ship and click on the Barter Box next to Euphonia. Select Treasure Map Pieces and turn them in to speed up opening Crystal Cove.

    4) Crystal Cove will open. If you are not on the central ship, go there now. You will see a black gateway. Click on it, use your Treasure Compass, and enter Crystal Cove. When it asks for a level, select your character level. If you select a lower level, you risk collecting the wrong Stolen Gems to obtain a Spyglass at your level so take care.

Optional: If you are not under the affect of Pirate's Grog and have one, or the extra Doubloons to purchase one, use it now.

    5) You will now find yourself in a 20 minute timed quest very similar to Kobold based Cannith Challenges like the Extra-Planar Palace or Lava Caves. Guides exist for running these Challenges solo or in a group. I will not attempt to repeat those guides here. Instead, I will now offer the 'easy' way to get a Spyglass (or other low level item).

    6) Ignore all the kobolds, even when they come under attack and die. Run out into the cave system and kill everything you find. You will mostly encounter skeletons, zombies, and hobgoblins. You will also face a number of bosses including three specters, two hobgoblins, and a minataur. Kill them, too. If you kill every single monster in the cove you should obtain over 100 Stolen Gems. Please note you will not obtain any experience using this method.

    7) You will find yourself back on the ship with the entrance to Crystal Cove. Go to the Rook's Gambit tavern and enter.

    8) In a back corner of the tavern you will find a bunch of stacked barrels. Hidden behind the barrels you will find an Old Dusty Barter Box. Click on it.

    9) Type 'Spyglass' into the search field. Select the 'Spyglass' you want. Please note that you obtained Stolen Gems appropriate to your character level and thus cannot create higher level Spyglasses. With Stolen Gems you may always go down but never up. Note the Stolen Gems and Doubloons needed to obtain the Spyglass you want.

    10) Convert the Stolen Gems you collected into the correct Stolen Gems using downgrades (1 for 1) and sidegrades (3 for 1). If you need Doubloons, you may convert your Stolen Gems for those as well. Alternatively, save your extra Stolen Gems and collect Doubloons on the island or in a quest using Pirate's Grog.

    11) Once you have the correct Stolen Gems and Doubloons, barter for your Spyglass. You now have the old, Tier I version of the Spyglass.

    12) Leave the Rook's Gambit and head back to the ship. Talk to Euphonia. Ask to refresh your old gear. Open the barter dialog, give her the 'old' Spyglass, and convert it into a 'new' Spyglass.

    13) Congratulations! You now have a brand new Spyglass!

    *Happy Cat Burglar Face*

    Notes:
    1) The method described above will work for any new item accept L28 items, all Broken Oars, and all Flotsam Daggers. If you want the new stuff, you need to join a group or learn to manage the Kobolds.
    2) In my experience, the method described above does not save any time versus making items using Green Dragonshards. It simply exists as an alternative for those who cannot manage the Kobolds.
    3) The method above awards absolutely zero experience.
    4) Anyone can manage the Kobolds solo and collect 100 Green Dragonshards. It merely requires practice and patience.
