Default What is the deal with War Domain?

My daughter has a level 23 pure Cleric and is looking to play the game after several years away. She really likes the healing aspect, although I informed her that the game has changed quite a bit since she played and that "only" healing isn't necessary until Reaper play (I haven't played a Cleric in years either which is part of what prompts this post).

I told her about Domains and that those would provide more to do. I pointed out a few (like Luck, Animal, and War) since she would rather swing than cast offensive spells.

    Some restrictions:
    • She kind of likes the idea of 2 weapons for this build - possibly sword and board.
    • No Vistani and no Falconry and no Harper
    • She has a lesser heart, so staying pure is what she will do,
    • She still wants to heal.
    • Actually, didn't every account get a +20 HoW back in the day? If she has one, would that new FvS tree be better? She might need a bit more favor, but hat seems doable.

I simply don't have a clue how to build any sort of "battle cleric" as they weren't real feasible several years ago. I see talk about them these days, but don't see good, specific information (I probably missed it).

She owns the first two expansions, but not Ravenloft. She also owns quite a bit of the older content and last week I bought her Devil's Gambit since it was 25% off. Are there other updates (besides the newest ones) that would be worthwhile? I think she would really enjoy the WPM quests and of course Ravenloft. If she does really enjoy playing again, I could see buying her Ravenloft for Christmas!

Thanks for any help and insight,
    Taleisin
(note that she also wants to build a Fighter so I have another post in those forums)

Well, most viable battle cleric builds are using falconry,
For the wisdom to hit damage
You can go sword and board with war domain,
But you will likely be a str cha build, and dump stat wisdom
Not an ideal fighting cleric, but doable
You're best return is to add in implosion and mass frog,
But you need wisdom dc for that
Or you can go radiant old style fleric
You will still get those two spells but won't be as good on a wisdom build
Ya falconry is way to go now. It costs 1495. Or 2500? For that and wpm
    Maybe better first buy
    Kil Glory
    30 alchemist
    HOW
    Sarlona

Why not knock both fighter and cleric out in one build? 14 strength/6 clerics are beast for low life-low skill floor players through heroics an should solo Hard easy in epics. Another fun alternative would be a radiant swashbuckler. 14 cleric/3 bard/3 whatever (fighter for feats or rogue for evasion would be best). Though 11 cleric 6 ftr 3 bard str domain/aureon deity w/ a hand axe seems like it would be a blast

War Domain is allows some melee power when turning, access too all weapons (was broken at one time with exotics and I am unsure if it was ever fixed), an the Holy Sword spell at level 14. It isn't the best when compared to other melee domains unless going tier 5 tempest, barbarian, KotC, falconry, or some other funky 14/6 combo. Pure Holy Sword Cleric is still tier 3 DPS even after pass. And Warpriest gave pass gave access to +1 threat range/critical w/ favored weapon.

Well; is she an elf? Elf archer clerics are some of my favorite healer builds at the moment, good support in higher difficulties and acceptable soloing lower difficulties.

If you're looking to melee; it is still fairly recommended to multiclass your cleric with a "real" melee class to get access to more/better melee enhancements.

Of course; there's always axel's cleric if you really want to be a pure-20-cleric who melees. I've heard mixed reviews of it but I think he has updated it for the new domains and warpriest update?

Or, if none of that interests you; I can probably throw together a quick sword+board pure cleric warpriest build that you could LR into using a +0 lesser heart.

Favored soul have a couple advantages over cleric; but clerics do have their own advantages to compensate. I've done multiple multi-class splits with either of them as healers who melee.
Selvera: Aasimar Fighter 20/Epic 10; Old and wise fighter.
Jen: Half Elf Fvs 4; Healer Archer on a TR with friends
Mayve: Drow Bard 14/Wizard 6/Epic 7; Vampire Enchantress

I haven't yet updated that old thread. I need to get around to doing that.
