Default Returning Player Help Ranger/Rogue Build

I am recently returning to the game after a long absence. I want to make a character that will play well with my son, but able to solo as well - especially to disable traps on normal difficulty. I am trying to make a rogue / ranger build (Arcane Archer Enhancements). I rolled up an elf and took rogue 1st, and ranger 2nd. Plan to take rogue 3rd, then the rest in ranger. If needed, here are my stats (14,18,14,12,10,8). Just want to know if this seems like a viable build. Thanks in advance.

    Mmmmm...

It might work, but there is no compelling reason to plan to take more than 1 level of Rogue - anything more dilutes/delays everything that Ranger can give.

You're only Level 2/3 - stop, delete, and roll up one of these two (you want the first, "Bow"/Ranged, but including both versions for any who'd rather go 2-weapon fighting style)...

    o Bow https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...=1#post5793839
(Edit - W/ a 32 points build, going w/ 18 Dex and a higher Strength solves many future Encumbrance headaches, and you're only losing a little DPS.)

    ...& 2WF https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...or-new-players

And you could certainly mesh the two - a Barbarian level for faster kiting can be a life-saver.

(Edit: If you're going to do that, plan it out 100% https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...=1#post5534437.)

Both are from this (highly recommended!) thread:

Unless you need the skill pts or really want Evasion early on, there's no particular reason to take rogue 2 on a ranger build, since you get Evasion at rgr lvl 9. I prefer a barb splash (rgr 18 / rog 1 / barb 1) for the +10% run speed; one of the drawbacks of ranger is they did NOT get a Fast Movement enhancement like Acrobat's.
If needed, here are my stats (14,18,14,12,10,8).
You can dump STR on a ranger these days to focus on DEX and CON; you also need INT for enough skill pts and (if going AA) WIS will boost your Paralyzing Arrow DCs now.

Here's a modified version of one of my builds:
    Code:
    Aerenal Archer

With a +2 INT tome you should be able to afford to max out Open Lock as well; although since this is a DEX build, it's probably not necessary to have max ranks in OL. A lot of trapper potential comes from gear & buffs anyway.

The Dragonmark is partly for flavor (glowing tattoos are cool!) but mostly for the Displacement clickie (Gtr Shadow DM). Downside is the 12 AP cost.

Are all of them still 'in date' ?

As a total newbie I worry that at the time of writing they were the bees' knees but that some update or nerf or whatever might have invalidated them as I've been strongly considering the trapmonkey TWF ranger build

Ranger hasn't had amy significant changes since those were posted, so those are all still good. Take a look at the build Unb' posted above and compare - that will have any "current" tweaks built in.

Some players complain about bow DPS (and it is less than Great X-bow and repeaters), yet bow builds seem to still make it to 20 and 30 no problem. I know mine did.
