I will qualify this response by saying that I am a dog person, but over the years I have come to appreciate cats. I began liking them more once I understood that there is a real reason for their often bizarre, unnatural behavior. Subtle clues, such as their insistence on interfering with & disrupting normal every day activities, or more involved meddling in anything that requires your concentration. Aye, there is indeed a method to their madness, and a reason they are so determined to unravel the mysteries of human technology. A further clue happened when the cat ran across the wife's laptop one day & generated a character that I had no clue even existed. There was no translating it either, despite delving deep into CharMap & scrying through all of the dead languages there. No, this was some sort of code, some attempt at communication with an overseer, and that's when I realized that humanity is doomed.

We have been invaded, but not in the true military sense of the word, but rather infiltrated over a period of thousands of years as we are slowly assimilated into subservient roles by these supposed felines. These creatures, likely alien & not of this earth, have donned fur coat disguises which look cute & distract from their true purpose while allowing them to move freely among us. If you still have doubt, try rubbing a cat's belly, for there is where the only fault in the cat's disguise can be found, and why they are often so frantic to keep you away from that particular spot. Just one more example of their aberrant behavior, and why we should be ever vigilant lest we become totally enslaved.

Humanity was fortunate enough to recover the field notes of one cat which was apparently severed from the collective, so that we may all be informed of what is really going on:

"When asked if the developers hate the players, as they make so many challenging jumping puzzles, their response was that they have what they consider a “… normal amount of contempt for the players.” This is good. A dungeon master should always nurse a healthy contempt for his or her players."

An elegant and aesthetically pleasing solution!

This issue was solved in my household early on. Whenever a vertical surface above ground level which was not a cat tree was assailed, we would loudly proclaim "Only those with an opposable thumb may be on the <insert kitchen countertop, table, stovetop, etc. as needed>. Raise your hand if you have an opposable thumb." And then, when a hand was not raised by the feline in question, they were promptly dumped upon the ground. Cats can learn, it just takes time and patience.

As kittens, placing empty 12 oz. soda cans every foot or so along the kitchen counters was an effective deterrent for while we were away at work. And logged the training progress for us, via /var/log/CansOnFloor. Also amusing for when we were home, as any 'incursions' could be easily detected even when we were in other rooms, and the sound of the can clattering to the ground never failed to evoke a hasty fleeing mechanism.

We weren't so successful with the double sided tape that was supposed to prevent them from clawing the furniture. "Cats don't like the feel of it on their paws!" the product proclaimed. We applied it to the couch the first day after kitten arrival and then went to work, smug in the satisfaction of having been smarter than a cat. We knew we were in trouble when upon returning home and finding the tape gone, we also had to try to identify the new cat toy which had mysteriously appeared. It was a ball of said tape which they had managed to create from the linear 12' or so of tape we had applied to the couch. And they loved batting it around just as much as any other toy, and didn't care about the stickiness one whit. Providing lots of other targets was the solution to that issue, plus constant reinforcement that the scratching posts were their only allowed target. Weekly nail clipping also helps.

I've got a tuxedo (mostly black, white on chest) who SWEARS SHE IS A LABRADOR RETREIVER. How often do you get a cat who demands to play fetch for at least 15 minutes, every night. "Come on, throw the mousie. Just throw it already."

My fiancee's cat does this. She'll demand for one of us to throw things for her to fetch, and when we don't, she'll grab a balled-up fast food wrapper or a straw or something out of the trash and drop it by our feet while mewing expectantly.

If you get a bigger cat box you can get a bigger cat. This will keep the hackers away for sure.

My boy has had to throw away 2 keyboards so far because one of our cats feels the need to use it as a pee pad. We'd throw away the guilty cat, but she's old and blind now...

So we're in the middle of a quest, and it seems that someone is lagging behind after every encounter. After the third or fourth time this happens, I ask the question if something is wrong, and this is what was sent to me in response:

Beware...The cat conspiracy is alive & well.
