Default game crashes with no errors when I pick my server (argo)

I have Windows 10 and I told DDO to go ahead and use DirectX10 when it asked. I have gotten ddo to run once on the first time I installed it, but after that initial time running the game, it won't get past the point where I pick my server. It just waits a moment and then doesn't actually start the next step.

I have read that there are some issues with directx and I'd be happy to drop back to using DirectX9 if that would fix it, but I can't change the options until I get to the next screen where it won't actually get to for me. Any suggestions on where I can look in the registry or a .ini file to tell it to go ahead and run with settings that work instead of of failing to run with the current settings? I don't see any .ini file in the StandingStoneGames folder at all.

My DDO on my old computer still works just fine, but the new computer isn't happy with the game, apparently.

Look for Documents > Dungeons & Dragons Online > User Preferences
That's where my ini file lives.

In the settings in there, look for the ones under [Render]
And try changing GraphicsCore=D3D11 (I use Directx 11, yours probably says D3D10) to GraphicsCore=D3D9
    Then save and relaunch.

    Oh! Or try this.

Scroll down to the bit about "After I enabled DirectX 10/11 the game crashed or now it doesn't launch. How can I change it to not use DX10/11 if I can't get to Options?"

I'm having the same problem: Launcher closes and game never launches after choosing a server.

In the process of troubleshooting, I noticed that the UserPreferences.ini that was being automatically created by the launcher never had any information listed after the [User_1] section. It didn't have any subsequent sections such as [Display], [Render] or [Sound]. I assume this is because the launcher closes before any of this information is written to the file.

I tried copying a Userpreferences.ini from a different PC that is able to run the game, but it still had the same problem. I've tried goofing with various settings, including every setting I could find suggestions for on this forum (such as resolutions, directx version, fullscreen/windowed), but nothing has worked. Since the file never completes being written, there is no way to narrow anything down anyways, and I'm not about to try trillions of permutations.

This error is very common, and it's very frustrating since there is no error message at all.
