Default FIXED! could not initialize direct3d and Direct X 9 grayed out.

    FIXED!

I just ran into this issue on a brand new build. I upgraded my system and installed windows 10 pro fresh. Did all the updates then installed DDO. It wouldn't let me make any changes to the graphics without the error message shutting down DDO. DDO would run fine if I didn't make changes to the graphics.

Also the direct X 9 was grayed out and wouldn't let me change it.

After much research and banging of my head against the desk, I found this:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/down...ion.aspx?id=35

Once installed, all issues were resolved.

This one hit me as well, and your solution solved it.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for this. I had the exact same problem. Had to install a new hard drive on my laptop, and once I got DDO installed on it, I had this exact same resolution problem with greyed out DirectX 9 box. Your linked download tool solved it right away. THANK YOU!!!!

Sorry for the necropost, but I think you saved me a few hours of head banging and troubleshooting. Fresh install today, brand new PC, DIrectX 12, and therefore it wouldn't recognize any directX version. After installing the SDK it let me use DirectX11.

    Thanks so much.

IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS AFTER THESE STEPS:

Like other users in this thread, I am on a new machine, directx12 installed, and directx9 was greyed out in my graphics options.

*You can install older versions of directx all you want, but you still won't have the option to use them if ddo isn't using the correct graphics card.*

Right click your desktop, click "NVidia Control Panel," go to 3D settings, and make sure you are using your HIGH-PERFORMANCE graphics card globally by default.

If that hasn't automatically solved your problem, go to program settings, hit "add," and find dndclient64. There are a few different applications listed for DDO, but this is the actual client you need to modify. Once selected, you can set its graphics card to use your "HIGH-PERFORMANCE" graphics card.

This finally solved the problem for me, hopefully it can help someone else. While you're at it, make sure all of your games are using your actual fancy graphics card, rather than just your integrated graphics. I still recommend following the previous commenter's steps if you haven't installed dx11.

Went through the whole head banging situation.

What finally worked for me was accessing the options in the launcher, clicked on repair tab and in the Select Display Adapter box I set it to my graphics card instead of leaving on automatic.

    I'm happy now.
