Simple slaver gear crafting question

I've decided to grind out some (heroic) slaver gear, not for this life, but for future lives. Before I put to much time into it, I have a simple question - can you upgrade items piecemeal - i.e. if I can only afford a prefix and suffix gem for now, I can stick them in the item, use it for a while, and down the road add an augment slot (for example)?

The wiki doesn't say much, other than a warning about how you can't undo mistakes, so figured I'd check....

ya you can add them as you go

just cant replace them - ie if you wanted int on your prefix you cant change it to str later on
