One of my chars is a sword and shield pure half orc paladin vanguard

He may not be the most powerful build. But he stands like a giant, stuns like crazy, knocks enemies over like bowling pins. Fun to play, and can take quite the beating before going down. One caveat though, vanguard tends to be fairly equipment dependent. Paladins might want to start as a sacred defender / chalice and move to vanguard after getting some good named shields.

For endgame I've got him decked him out in executioner platemail and helm and is working on a 5 piece slaver set. Demon Slab is by far the best vanguard shield in the game and I'm using a legendary green khopesh. ( Also UMD so I can use master touch scrolls )

For Heroics: Pure Pally THF Sacred Knight is strong medicine; Holy Sword, Zeal, Deathward, CSW, Pally Capstone = pure god-gravy! Get a good two-hander like Xuum or Riftmaker and profit. I'm soloing HE and occasionally HLSR, on mine - only drawback for me (read; what kills me ) is getting held now and then and running out of juice before I can recover: beartraps - my fault, magick holds are just the price I pay for dumping WIS - I guess.... So-yeah, it's a little 1 dimensional - but Paladonna (she drops Stunning Blow for Dragonmark of Passage and put points towards DDoor and Teleport for QoL) is my go-to girl for new content and when I just want to thoughtlessly wreck the place and kill them all.

Epics and Endgame: No clue. I don't stay there long... soon as I get enough seeds I TR. Not that I have anything against Epics - I just view those levels as more grouping oriented and I prefer to solo-play.

Mine is monk - I like the more active combat style, combos, self healing & buffs, and general awesomeness. Plus, my current capped shintao monk is a bladeforged and with those claws he looks like robo-wolverine
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

My vote was for Paladin too. Heroic lvls are really easy, survavibility is really one of the top imho and DPS is good. Maybe paladins need more love for epics: probably, but i havent test epic lvls recently, monks are a bit stronger for epic questing

Monk is in a great place at the moment, having received an enhancement pass and some class feat tweaks a few updates ago.

For Reaper, I'd prefer a Fighter, though. Heavy armor PRR and Kensei DPS can make all the difference.

psykopeta is finally baconpletionist because there isn't anything to delay it more - thelanis, where the gimps claim to be pros and noobs claim to be pros, no newbies allowed(unless they claim to be pros), we have enough drama w/o them. PS: I post only in the latest thread shown in main page, in the weird case u want something from me, feel free to send pm

Technically in DDO parlance those are counted as "Specialists" along with rangers & artificers.

I agree the distinction is somewhat dubious these days with a lot of monks being throwers and archers whereas a lot of rangers are tempests, but, it is what it is I guess.

As for me, the Title says "best" but the OP body text says "favourite", so that's a bit confusing as to what the poll is asking, so I'm not saying it's the best, but my favourite is definitely monk, always has been even before the pass, but I agree they're in a pretty good place atm.

You are right, but it is my first poll and i was a bit confused during creation. BTW changed post title. The interesting thing is to understand what are the favorite players classes. Thanks for the tip!

Hey Jhozam, I just wanted to say the thread title is quite misleading. It can affect new readers in such a way that they will think Monk is the best (and what does best mean?) melee class atm and make them roll a monk, because he has the most votes in your poll.

Monk is a complex melee class, one of the hardest and a favourite to many melee players I agree.
But there is a huge difference between our favourite and the best. Also there is no "the best". There is the best at.
The best at single target dps, the best at aoe dps, the best survivability inside the category of dps builds, the best dps build at being versatile and more.

A build can not have or do everything, otherwise we will be playing ESO PvE which is fairly boring and everyone is and looks the same and does the same things.

That means in reply to your 1st post, there is no build that has the best DPS and survivability and ultility and endgame life (not sure what u mean there, propably cap?).

You also state twice, PURE class. I just wanted to elaborate a bit on the topic of pure classes vs. multiclassing. Pure classes are almost always easier to build, harder to mess up and in most cases are not the "best at" something. They are perfect for new players who need a solid build, but not something complex or gear demanding.
This is true for ranged and melee builds, but not for casters. DC casters tend to reach their maximum potential in their pure builds. That is because of spell-level, DCs and spell penetration and capstone enhancements.

Now I'm not saying that pure melee or ranged builds are bad, but they are not the best at, in terms of dps. That is where multiclassing shines, with builds like Monkcher (best at ranged burst dps), wolf build (best at single target melee dps) or 18Fighter/2Monk (best at melee burst AoE damage). There are ofc pure builds which can also be the best at something at the moment, like pure Rogue Mechanic (best at ranged sustained dps). Or a pure 20 Fighter-dwarf (best at tanking, IF sufficient clickies are available).

I also don't want to discourage people to play pure builds. Comparing for example a pure kensei-dps Fighter and a 18F/2M dps centered-kensei, the difference is not that big of a deal and both builds are very strong and completely viable. A pure Barbarian dps build on the other hand will outshine every other multi-classed Barbarian melee-dps build at the moment, because of his capstone.

So in the end my vote for my favourite melee class atm would obviously be the Fighter <3
But for the best-at melee build you would have to make the voting list a lot longer.

    P.S. welcome to the guild!

Its tough. Mainly because Barbs cant be bladeforged lol. Well not without spending some cash. So you have a pally which is pretty good pure with the spells and enhancements. (I guess you could do self heals as well with cure serious and being a human or something. But I really like recon with jacked amp especially in reaper)

And then the barb which seems to be build for solo just to murder their way to healthiness. (Nothing more annoying then that useless guy hiding in the back sniping your kills lol.) Plus blood oath, its like ya robbed an ability from the locks. Then theirs the outright sick core enhancements of the 3 trees 2 mainly. I wish I had 1 more point to take both.

In the end I really like both but I just enjoy murdering stuff with barb.

The fighter I always considered more of a mutt.

ranger and rogue really should be on the list.

fighter and ranger and monk are all pretty solid pure builds right now.

paladin is fairly bad without 5/6 fighter levels at this point.

    barbarian is ok.

heroics dont matter because anything will work in heroics.
You are but a lamb, ignorant of your own ignorance. You no longer interest me.
