Default What the hell is this "Invisible VolumeTrigger" b.s.?

So, Von2 Epic Elite, we're approaching the giant. Standard op, one person goes ahead to try to diplo the giant and as he's walking up "(Combat): Invisible VolumeTrigger's focused dragon fire shield hit you for a total of 824 points of fire damage after 120 were blocked by energy resist." happens to 4/5 party members. He didn't have a chance to talk to the giant, much less activate him. As our last party member is running back to grab stones to pull back and start raising, HE gets hit by it. Band, SPLAT, done, the party wipes in less than 3 seconds with everyone dying from some prick named Invisible VolumeTrigger.

ANYONE have any clue what's going on, or did i just get victimized by a dev's Easter Egg?

on Epic, you have to fight the giant o-o
and a dragon firewall thingy pops up at the bridge until the giant is down
that fire wall hits hard and will basically instant kill mostly anyone in it so make sure the entire party is on the platform before approaching the giant
PS: Greensteel RUINED the game! and you all know it!
    less buffing, more nerfing!!!
to make it easier for those of you that wants to avoid me in game, all my characters are in "Bladesworn Mercenaries"

I know this to be fallacious, because on previous lives with high Dip I've successfully used Diplomacy on Epic (pre-epic difficulty having more than one choice) into giving me the key. And this was AFTER the other post I've seen asking the same question, on Valentine's Day last year. So, let's try something that factual, if we might?

If you know it's fallacious then why are you asking? Go to the wiki and check http://ddowiki.com/page/Ingstoldt.

Fact, go in as a group. If your party members are unwilling to do that, they shouldn't get close to it at all.

Orange-named optional encountered in Prison of the Mind. He is a giant, sub-race Fire Giant. The fight with him can be skipped via diplomacy/bluff checks. On Epic Elite he is not optional and must be killed to proceed.

Maybe it was part of the change adding layers of challenge to the quest...

You know, to make elite the more difficult option maybe?

    Question

Now, what IS this "invisible volume trigger" now, actually ?
"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

Oh, right, gee, so the, you know, RED NAMED minotaur shaman, the tharak hounds that use only your dex bonus as a saving throw against their spell-based trips rather than your reflex, the beholders that can cast three disintegrates at three different targets simultaneously (not their 10-beam barrage, disintegrate), and, oh, the Arcane Oozes that have such a high resistance to every element, including light, that they may as well be immune to them since it takes inordinate amounts of both SP and time to kill them didn't make it enough of a challenge. They had to force us to fight a red-named fire giant that appears to be effectively immune to ice damage, as well. Yes, that's certainly difficult. Not challenging, really, just retardedly difficult. It's kind of like Tomb of the Tormented that way. It's not really challenging, just pants-on-head retardedly long.

And yes, I am differentiating between a challenge and stupidly difficult.

Apparently it has changed where you have to kill him as people have pointed out. Move along, nothing more to see here.

Problem resolved: to make up for being forced to fight him, the door opens the moment the fight starts, so either a really stealthy rogue or a lock-picker with a distraction can simply walk in, pick the lock, snag the thing, and run like crazy. Even if you fall, that one spider is WAY easier.

I got this message once as well. "You take 756 points of damage from invisible volume trigger"

Apparently it is the name of the damaging effect of the flaming wall that appears and incinerates you if you do not get off that aquaduct before someone in your party speaks to the giant.
