Vendors only pay about 1/10 the value of gems. They resell them to gem merchants who pay about 1/4 the value and who then sell them to expensive jewellery shops abroad who pay about 1/2 the value. The jewelers use them in jewellery or simply polish and resell them to the aristocracy for about twice their value.

Want to get rich? Hoard your gems for a long time, then give up adventuring, move to a big city, and open a jewellery store!

As there are no gem mines, the only source for the vendors to get gems is by buying them from adventurers. They then produce jewellery and fancy clothing for the aristrocates of Stormreach. As they pay only a fraction of what the gems are worth, they make a wagon load of plat, which they use to make holidays in Ataraxia!

There is a secret vendor portal somewhere in Eveningstar where vendors teleported the gems they bought outside of Cormyr. It eventually went to a realm where magic items can be slotted with gems and used in crafting.

Some of the those items eventually came back pre-slotted as named items that we see today.

They put a handfull of those gems in their mouths immediately after adventurers leave, since they're nothing but expensive hard candy, and merchants don't want you to know about it.

What do the Vendors do with the gems you sell them?

    1) Adventurer finds gems in Chest
    2) Adventurer sells gems to Merchant
    3) Merchant goes for a walk
    4) Monster steals gems from Merchant
    5) Monster puts gems in Chest
    6) Adventurer kills Monster
    7) Go to (1)

They digitalise then and then trade the gems to Spelljammer pilots, who sell them to Off World Trading Companies that sell them to Earthlings after they are redigitalzed and added to computer games.

I thought everyone knew this by now!

They pawn the purple ones to the Kobold Miner's Union
They paint the other gems purple and...well...let's just say kobolds are not very smart...

After sorting dealers send all diamonds and rubies to developers. Those do a huge users-impenetrable shield of diamonds. On this shield from rubies beautifully flickering and poured inscription is laid out: "Ours logs show nothing, servers work fine!". 8)

They sell the gems to House Cannith, who then feeds the gems to the Iron Defender army they are secretly building.

They donate them to the Gem Dragon association for protection from angst of players getting ripped off for cheap gems. After all, Gem Dragons need somethign to sleep on at night.

They use it to barter for rarer goods and wares to sell, travelling towards the more exotic and harder to reach locales. But of course they will almost always get waylaid by enemies and must fend for themselves. Thus, such precious gems are once more lost in the world, until more capable adventurers chance upon them yet again.

    Default Digital Re-integration

They pass them to the Dev's, who use a digital Re-integrator to reconstruct them in the "real world" and sell them to fund more ddo updates
