Default Arcane Trickster build for beginner?

    Hi,
I'm an inexperienced player that has recently returned to the game. With few exceptions, my pen/paper and online adventures never progressed much past casting level 1 magic missiles. I'd like to introduce D&D to my son when he's older (my wife is interested in learning too), so now is the time for me to get more serious.

I'm interested in playing a character that can disarm traps, pick locks, sneak attack, use invisibility and teleport, strike from a distance with magic. It seems an Arcane Trickster build might be fun. I like the racial bonuses an Elf or Drow would provide.

A pen/paper build I saw online (for 5e I think) mentioned Urchin as a background for the stealth, sleight of hand, thieves' tools, and disguise kit. Harpers faction sounds interesting.

I'm not concerned about meta-gaming my way to the end-game at this point, but having a general plan would be nice. I'll be soloing for the foreseeable future and it is OK if things are 'hard'. I'd rather play a character I like than have an easy time.

Does Arcane Trickster sound OK? Elf or Drow? Are backgrounds and factions available? Any nice builds I should look at?

Any comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

Unfortunately there isn't a Arcane Trickster build as the the way prestige works in ddo is much different from pnp dnd but if you like give me some ground rules such as do you wish to range, melee or spell focused. There are ways to achieve a arcane trickster like play style but some ground rules need to be explained.

    1. Sleight of hand is not a skill in ddo, otherwise imagine the fun of reverse pickpocket and dropping a grenade in a unsuspecting mob
    2. There isn't a faction in ddo, the harper favor merely unlocks the harper tree enhancement
    3. There is no background trait to be taken as well as well as the disguise skill
    4. Which server do you play? i am on Orien if you need some stealth guides i can help you in that regard or there are stealth guides available
Character: Obveril Orien server (current theme i will add you encase in jade to my garden of contemplation!)

Favor unlock for the server you gain the favor on, the store unlocks to all server. It is similar mechanic as Drow race, FvS and Artificer class unlock for the server
Character: Obveril Orien server (current theme i will add you encase in jade to my garden of contemplation!)

Spell focused sounds more interesting, but I'm willing to try something else out.

I could start this character on any server. I have a few low-level characters on Argonnessen and Cannith.

Then i would recommend going Drow for the stat bonus to both dex and int, i presume you don't have 32 point build yet.

Two options to consider then range and melee

Route Range: Mechanic Rogue + Archmage:- evocation or conjuration type, using repeater or great crossbow as your physical attack with spells like web to gain cc capacity or illusion for invisibility SLAs

Route Melee: Assassin + Eldritch Knight:- Allows you the ability to assassinate mobs and using Eldritch strike and also increasing your double strike chances, (note your Assasinate DC will not be as high as pure rogue)

Route Melee 2: Acrobat + Eldritch Knight:- Staff build allows you to have better melee range and and potential multi cleave ability from acrobat and Eldritch Strike

Class split can be in any flavor depending on the spell level you want to have or rogue abilities you want to gain
Character: Obveril Orien server (current theme i will add you encase in jade to my garden of contemplation!)

    There are few options.

18 wizard/2rogue. Probably pale master. So you be like Lich rogue, with most of the spell casting (DC's suffer some, so the endgame experience wont be that great, especially without gear).
20 Rogue, use scrolls, clickies and UMD to cast spells.
18 Rogue 2 wizard Archmage invis SLA
18rogue/2artificer, repeater/rune arm build. Artificer is paid race tho.
    There are also
    14paladin/6rogue
    15artificer/5rogue
    6rogue/6ranger/8(insert class here)
Also maybe monk/rogue? Dunno I don't use monk stuff to give a build.
but dunno if you be interested in those.

Rogue comes in melee (likely dual daggers, or quarterstaff), and ranged (repeating/great crossbow).

Probably end up INT based, and use KtA from Harper tree.

    links
    Wizard18/rogue2, Pale Trapper
    https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...-Wizard-Rogue)
Spell focuses are optional. You can choose to specialize in other schools than shown in build.
You could also do Bladeforged/warforged Archmage version and use Reconstruct for healing

    -----
    Rogue (melee)
    https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...san-s-Assassin

Couldn't find good pure rogue repeater or quarterstaff builds (they are usually somewhere in middle of build request treads).

    Repeater builds are as follows
Maxi int, have 21 dex with tomes at level 21, and 18 for IPS

    Point Blank Shot
Rapid Reload (artificer gives you this for free)
Rapid Shot (ranger gives you this for free)
Precise Shot(level 4 ranger gets it for free)
Improved Precise Shot (level 11 ranger gets if for free, no 19 base dex needed)
    Precision
    ---------
    +Insightful Reflexes
Possibly heavy repeater proficiency feat (artificer , and high level mechanic enchantments give that for free)
    -------
Manyshot DOES NOT WORK WITH CROSSBOWS
    -----------

Additional notes- These are optimized builds, made to make sure you have a crutch while you are learning. You can make any build "kinda work" with proper gear, and playing smart. Builds we advise to do have large focus on damage (because HP inflation is real at later levels) and self healing (because healers basically left the game/always play solo or with guild/friends for reasons, and ain't nobody got time to wait 40 minutes for a healer).

Also you can buy scrolls, and cast most spells up to 6th level with UMD. It includes teleport, and heal scrolls. Teleport only works between "towns (known as houses here)", and there is no blink ability (there is the wings (for favored souls, monks, air sorcerers,Exalted Angel destiny users, and jet boots) ability that gives you doblejump like ability) Flight is limited to certain areas ( its basically not in the game), and jump caps at 40.

Some core, must have (well you can do without, its just Really nice to have) stuff like Harper, warforged, and artificer are behind favor "unlocks" that are basically paywalls. Yes you can get it all for free, if you really want to. No. you are better off paying money for them, because it will take you months of grinding to do that.

The black Friday sales are coming up, make some test characters, see if you like the game and see if you can get some stuff for cheap then.

The short answer is: you use Turbine Points (TPs) in the DDO Store to unlock account options like Harper or buy gear & consumables for your characters. TPs can be bought outright for money (either in-game or via the DDO Market); or earned via Favor which is awarded for quest completions. Some account options can also be unlocked via Favor; e.g., the Harper tree can be unlocked by earning 310 Harper Favor. Note that Favor unlocks are per-server (Store unlocks are for your account) and must be earned with a single character (i.e., one toon who hits 310 Harper Favor, not two toons who earn 155 Harper Favor each).

My first suggestion would be to forget most of what you know about PnP D&D, because DDO uses a heavily modified variant of the 3rd edition ruleset. Some game mechanics are completely original, like Epic Destinies; some are hybridized versions of PnP mechanics, such as Prestige Enhancements (PrEs), which are sort of like a cross between 3E's prestige classes and 2E's class kits; and a lot of things are fudged to account for moving from a turn-based combat system into a real-time action-y MMO, of course.

As for the Arcane Trickster - which I think of as rogue / arcane caster hybrid - it is feasible in DDO, though it is less than ideal from a max-DPS perspective, since the higher-level rogue PrE abilities are all pretty strong. The caster levels aren't for DPS, though, they're for utility & flavor. I have a few rogue / bard builds floating around based on Swashbuckler / Assassin.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advise. It sounds like the differences between PnP and DDO are more significant than I initially realized.

Based on what I've heard, it sounds like this will be a good fit for me:

18 Rogue 2 Wizard Archmage invis SLA

I'll check out some builds based on this idea.

I may go ahead and unlock 32 point builds as well.

    Thanks again.

A better idea IMO is a Dragonmarked elf pure rogue: the Shadow DMs let you use Invisibility, Shadow Walk, and Displacement a limited number of times per rest shrine. While it's less handy than being able to use the Archmage SLA, the upside is you get to keep the rogue / Assassin capstone which is quite strong.

EDIT: but if you do want to stick with the wiz splash, then have a look at the Prowler.

Thank you, unbongwah. I really like the idea of pure rogue. I was a bit concerned about multi-classing, especially as an inexperienced player. The Assassin capstone would be great and I was unaware of Dragonmarks.

It sounds like I can do most of what I'm trying to accomplish with that path.

Another option would be a deep gnome rogue, although I wouldn't recommend it if you are a new player since deep gnomes start at level 15.

Their racial tree has several SLA's including prismatic spray (which can daze, blind or silence whatever it hits) as well as stoneskin (which can give you some extra survivability) and phantasmal killer (instant kill).

All the SLA's use int for their DC. You can use intelligence or dex for your assassinate DC's. In addition, if you use the harper tree you can also use int for to-hit and damage.

Not saying it's the best option, but it fits the theme that you're going for.

That's for halfling, but the advice slarden gives applies to any rogue. You should also read the wiki entry on sneak attacks; in particular, pay attention to what renders targets vulnerable to them because that's essential for the soloing rogue. Learning to use stealth + Bluff to your advantage is also important, IMO.

For now, ignore the Epic Destiny stuff; what's important is the heroic leveling for a first-lifer. Ultimately this build is designed to use daggers as they provide the most named options; although at low levels, I also spent a few APs on staves, which will be helpful vs skeletons (plenty of undead thruout DDO).

Also Helpless state was nerfed into oblivion a while ago, and it applies poorly to sneak attacks. Basically only "helpless" targets are
    1)Under hold Creature
    2)under blindness
3)Flesh to Stone (I dunno if it still works, it should?)
Other methods of helplessness I find unreliable. There might be couple more, but don't count on it. I might have missed some. Stunning fist supposedly works, but my monk friend keeps complaining its bugged and don't activate reliably (not DC vise, the attack just does not happen at all) so...

Also check out traps and Runestones (well if you get into crafting, witch is a pain), for some less used tricks you might like. Also UMD, and scroll/wand vendors.

Recently I've been thinking about playing with a crossbow or repeater instead of a melee weapon. Would you advise against it or is it mainly a matter of personal taste? I see that some special conditions apply for ranged sneak attack, but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

Of course a rogue-assassin build based on range instead of melee could be significantly different in terms of some skills and feats chosen.

    Mechanic/repeater rogues are great.

Stat intensive taught. You need base 21 dex for combat archery at level 21, 19 base dex at 15 or 18, when you get 11 BAB, and a feat) for IPS(Improved Precise Shot, lets you shoot taught people damaging all of them). And you need as much int as you can get for damage, while not neglecting con for HP. Also weapon inefficiencies. They are weird.

And you gonna need specialized weapon for undead, especially skeletons. No sneak attack, and damage reduction for piercing (your bolts/arrows), and elemental resistances are not that great. That said there are a lot less skeletons than you would think.

Then you want a Mechanic build instead. Would recommend unlocking drow via Favor first, but an elf or halfling Mechanic is also doable.

He wanted elf for invisibility clickie, and human damage boost is really good. If you sacrifice some int, levelups, or get some tomes you don't really need drow/hafling.

Also the lack of con is not ideal. Drow + to int and +dex is really nice tho.

The "Arcane Trickster" Build that I finally settled on was a Halfling 11/7/2 Wizard/Rogue/Ranger, or 13/5/2 for better casting.

Not very good in Epics, but quite workable in Heroics with roughly 13d6 Sneak Attack, dual wield daggers/kukris.

Don't quote everything in the build, it was over a year ago.

OP's original request was for an Arcane Trickster, a D&D prestige class (PrC) which doesn't exist in DDO, so all of our responses have been with varying ideas for MCed builds which try to capture that PrC. OP now seems to be gravitating towards more conventional rogue DPS builds, albeit maybe with some flavor added.
Drow + to int and +dex is really nice tho.
Yes, that's pretty much why my first link is to a first-life drow Mechanic which is doable with just a +2 DEX tome from Favor. EDIT: though frankly there's so much stat / power creep in DDO you could do a DEX-based half-orc Mechanic and still be fine in most content...

I've also got various rog 13 / wiz 7 "Arcane Trickster-esque" builds, but they mostly predate the rogue overhaul in Update 25. The unfortunate side-effect of buffing the rogue 18/20 enhancements is they "reverse-nerfed" heavily-MCed rogue builds like mine. So it goes...
