Default Game won't load after server select, keeps installing C++ Visual every time I start.

Hello. I just reinstalled DDO after about a year break and having major issues starting the game.

First, the client keeps wanting to reinstall C++ Visual Redistributable 2005 no matter how many times I reinstall.

Second the game litterally won't start up and just goes back to desktop the moment I select a server.

The ONLY thing I can think of is that DDO is NOT on the main hard drive partition as my system, it's on the D: which is my main hard drive's 2nd partition but this problem is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT NOT AN ISSUE with ANY other game I play, including all my steam games, wow, Runescape, Atlantica Online and dozens of other programs I use, so it shouldn't be a problem with this one or I would call that a CRITICAL to almost CRIPPLING bug as so many people put their games on a partition separate from their system partition.

I honestly have no idea what that stupid C++ program even does and having multiple versions installed at once has caused major problems with my computer in the past.

Can someone explain exactly why DDO keeps requesting this to be installed and why it doesn't load the game after server select?

It's been years since I've used the official launcher to play the game, but I would guess that the reason it's trying to install the C++ redistributables every time is because the crashes are preventing it from remembering that's already been done.

I would let it install again, and then exit the client instead of selecting a server. Hopefully this will allow DDO to write to its config file that the library has been installed, and it won't try any more.

As far as the crash itself goes, I can't offer much help there. Like I said, it's been years since I've used it.

You might want to look for one of the community-made launchers instead. I use a personally-modified version of ddolauncher.py (which is command-line only), but there are other options out there. Depending on why your client is crashing however, this may not do you any good.

Worked fine on my Windows 10 until I had a problem and had to do advanced repair. After that I re-installed the game and it tries to install SP1 for 2005 Visual C++ each time, and once the play button comes up the client does not start. Get a working icon for about 20 seconds and then nothing.

I suppose you could try a Steam install of DDO. You don't need to have Steam open to use the game, but the install may go better. Run the game from Steam for the first time, though.

    Rename your userpreferences.ini file?

It may not do any good, but the userpreferences.ini file is in the ...Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online folder (the same place as your screenshots). If you change the name, you make it invisible to the launcher without actually deleting it. There are other suggestions in this thread that you may want to also try.

Look at post #4. Stoner81 has a good suggestion, and he also has a link to an alternate installation option (i.e. DDO-wrapper) in his signature.

Maybe it has nothing to do with C++ visual.
Did you reinstall your os, e.g. a clean windows10 installation. I tried 2 days to get the game running after I have installed win10 (clean installation, no update). The C++ visual thingy went away after installing C++ Visual Redistributable 2005 manually and deleting the ddo folder in documents.

Still the game didn´t launch and stopped after selecting a server.

The game started after I installed the DX9 components, file: directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. Not funny.

Win10 has DX12 and it seems there is no downward compatibility.

Useful info. We may be narrowing in on a specific process to fix this problem.

Did you try Stoner81's DDO-wrapper? It worked well for me when Win10 would not let me do a normal install of DDO in the Program Files folder (permissions problems, maybe).

*that was also after a clean OS re-install

*note: I made use of the links to DX 9 and Visual C++ that are in the DDO-wrapper FAQ post.

Just want to chime in here as I had the same problems after (finally) upgrading to the Windows 10 Anniversary (1607) upgrade.

Stoner81's post (#4) in this thread has all the links you'll need: Visual C++ runtime distributable, the links as Tcheuss mentioned in Stoner81's signature DDOWrapper link for the DX9C runtime, and (I didn't need it) the DDO Wrapper with a much more recent build of the game than the one you get on the official download.

    My solution:
    1. Install Dx9c (yes it sucks that we have fancy graphics cards that are DX12 ready but have to use DX9c). (Yes you have a newer version, install it anyway!)
    2. Install Visual C++ 2005 (you may have a newer version - install it anyway).
    3. In your Documents\DDO folder, rename the userpreferences.ini to something like userpreferences.old. (right-click the file name and select Rename).

Check on the launcher>Options that you aren't trying to use the proxy settings - unless you do use a proxy, then enter the values given by your ISP.

    Launch the game.

This was all I needed to do, didn't need the wrapper after all. Resetting all my video and audio settings was a minor annoyance but I was back in the game in time to pat all the munchkins on the head. (Dev request: steal some of LOTRO's emotes, /pathead is so much fun and annoying to halflings and dwarves).
World traveler: Since my first journey into Dereth I have ventured into new and exciting realms, Eberron, Faerun and Arda are to but name a few.The road goes ever on.
