Default The Prowler: Covert Assassin of House Thuranni

    18 Rogue/1 Wizard/1 Barbarian

NOTE: Forumite Shadowlord Tagedieb has played this build to cap and reports on this in post#34. Here is his build's pic:

I am still playtesting this build. All constructive feedback kindly welcomed. I am experimenting with a 28pt build on Wayfinder, currently level 16, non-VIP (so not an elite opener) and poorly geared. All well so far, the boost to movement speed and free invisi is simply awesome for my playstyle. Edit: I am working on halfling PLs & experimenting multiclass faster sneaking before returning to this split.

Forum user Dalros is playtesting a Deep Gnome INT variation throughout the thread; click here for his level 20 evaluation and here for his final report. It is a clever use of INT-DC sla Prismatic spray for blinding/dazing/silencing mobs great synergy with rogue! His own thread is here.

    General Philosophy
This build sacrifices the powerful capstone of the assassin tree for defensive and gameplay utilities which assist the assassin in stealth and survivability. (Late heroics become slightly more difficult due to the shifting of the level 18 core & GTWF, but that is not much of an issue.) Extended elven dragon marks (about 28 minutes displaced at cap with gear, intrinsic to build and not GS clickie dependent), 10% barbarian movement speed bonus (total of 28% movement speed buff, handy for sneaking), extended quickened invisibility archmage SLA 1sp, ES AoE attack option, quickened cocoon, Feat: magical training for permanent SP. FUN. Ease of weaving in the fade with dragonmarks.

Assuming the enhancements work as advertised (a VERY BIG assumption; I think it does not), the 75% stealth speed of assassins (stealthy tier 1) means that The Prowler's stealth speed is faster than a pure assassin's full non-stealthed run speed! (28x75%=21)

The usual difficulty of developing a workable endgame assassinate DC is mediated by gear, power creep and feat options, finally giving some flexibility to the class and play style. Also, the availability of sneak damage and melee power on gear will aid, though never succeed, in overcoming the huge loss of the capstone's DPS. Hence this is not a max-DPS build; it is about Style, Speed & Survivability.

Fun fact: Eldritch strike does not break stealth and invisibility. Whoot!

The build's bane: enemies, champs and bosses with True Seeing. The rats!

Leveling: R Wiz Barb (rest Rogue)
    Feats:
    1: TWF
2: Wizard bonus feat: extend (use this on the archmage invisi SLA along with quicken later)
    2: Free feat: magical training
    3: Least Dragonmark of Shadow
    6: Precision
    9: ITWF
    12: IC: Slashing or Piercing
15: quicken (this makes the Invisi SLA insanely fun)
    18: Greater TWF
    21: Epic sneak attack
    24: OC
    26 PTWF
    28 Elusive Target
    29 Dire Charge
    30 Epic Reflexes
    30 Scion of Astral

    Rogue:
    10 Improved evasion
    13 Oppportunist
    16 Defensive Roll

    ED:
    Shadowdancer, including Executioner’s Strike
Twists: usual, like balanced attacks, cocoon, etc.

    Enhancements:
    Assassin: 42 (all tier 5s & lethality, 2 Dex)
acrobat: 23 (Improved defensive roll tier 2, kip up, 3 Shadow dodge Dex)
Elf: 13 (extended displacement dragonmarks, 2 Dex, +4% accuracy. I plan to experiment with Feywild tap's incorp)
Archmage: 1 (quickened extended invisibility SLA 1sp)
EK: 1 (Eldritch Strike, 1% DS) This attack currently does not break invisibility or stealth. Optional. You can also just take improved defensive roll to tier 3.

    Achievable dex of 78: 20base, 6tome, 7levels, 2assassin, 4acrobat, 17item (slave lord), 7insight (LGS), 1exc, 4 quality, 2profane, 2shadowdancer, 2yugo, 2ship, 2 Elf
Edit: one could also add 2 from reaper helm, 2 from racial past lives, and 1 from reaper core. That is a grindy option. This build uses the racial tree though so even a couple of racial AP means 'options.'

    Assassinate DC: 10 base + 18 rogue levels + 6 stealthy (shadowdancer tier 1) + 4 scion of the astral plane + 10 Gear (7 murderous/3 insightful) + 34 from 78 dex + 5 measure the foe = 87
This can be buffed further with the earlier racial/reaper notes or even Tenser’s (+2 from +4 Dex) or Slave Lord’s Might 5 piece (+1 from +2 Artifact to Dex)
You can also take 6 dex in Shadowdancer for another +2 but that would waste better selections available
This would raise the DC to 91

    Gear: This is under consideration
a must: swap item Epic Chimera Crown (post shrine/start of quest). With the eChimera Crown, you gain one extra use of displacement. At cap, extended, that is approximately 6 minutes x 4; add into the rotation between uses SD’s improved invisibility for 90 secondsx3=270sec or 4.5 minutes for a total of 28.5 minutes displaced). This displacement is intrinsic to the build, not GS clicky.
Slave Lord's Might for buff to Dex (17, +4 quality) and awesome set bonus
LGS for insight bonus to Dex (7) or some other substitute (lootgen, cannith crafted)

    Considering:
ToEE set to compensate for loss of melee power of capstone

    Default Lore

    from Eberron wiki:

During the early years of the Last War House Thuranni's members were still apart of House Phiarlan and carried out many assassination contracts. The Thuranni family were mainly based in north-western Khorvaire and much of it's work was performed in Karrnath. It worked closely with the Emerald Claw during these years. House Phiarlan was contracted to assassinate the rivals of Galifar heirs and would-be usurpers, however it was the intelligence gathering which put the house under intense pressure as these requests came from all nations and factions. Due to the sheer volume of these contracts many of the dragonmarked elves families found themselves working at cross-purposes and directly competing with each other. Many lost their neutrality and developed loyalty to particular clients and nations. In 972 YK Thuranni family assassins turned on another House Phiarlan family, the Paelion family. Few members of the Paelion family survived the attempted extermination and those who did went into hiding. The leader of the House Phiarlan, Baron Elvinor Elorrenthi d'Phiarlan condemned the actions of the Thuranni family and called for the excoriation of them, however Elar Thuranni refused the judgement and declared his family as a new house. The debate as to whether Thuranni would become a new house was fierce and lasted for years, however the Twelve eventually agreed in favour of Thuranni.

House Thuranni competes with House Phiarlan in the entertainment, information brokering, assassination and espionage businesses, however it is only in assassinations that Thuranni manages to surpass its rival. Not even the elite can simply hire a Thurannni assassin as only Thuranni chooses its clients. It is rumoured that House Thuranni works with the Emerald Claw. House Thuranni offers its services as artists and courtiers to the public. Secret services such as Aundair's Royal Eyes often rely on the information purchased from House Thuranni and Phiarlan. House Thuranni has more artisans than actual artists from architects to painters and sculptors, however there are still many actors, dancers and musicians within the house.

    Some remarks

    1) Dragonmark : can you take them at level 3 ? I always thought you have to take them at level 1
    2) Eldritch Strike : this require 10 sp. With only 1 level of wizard, you will quickly run out of sp
    3) Why barbarian ? Just for the extra speed ? Because you don't spend any point in trees

Dragonmarks can go into any regular feat slot.
    3) Why barbarian ? Just for the extra speed ?
Yes: barb Fast Movement stacks with Acrobat Fast Movement.

Thx Unbongwah for clarifying Enguebert's questions! For #2--you will get bonus spell points from intelligence as well as gear. However, all the activities that require spell points (some utility level 1 spells, for example, cocoon, and archmage invisi) require 12 sp or less. With the free feat magical training, your sp, when it goes below 12, regenerates back to 12 or a little above. TBH Eldritch strike is really more for heroic leveling than epics. It is only 1AP to get and I plan to experiment with it since it does not break invisi. Remember that assassinate does not break invisi either so this gives one something to do while assassinate is on cooldown.

I've run Eldritch Strike on a THF Favor Runner w/ regular Cleave, and rarely run out of SP's while soloing (tho' this is low-level only). For that, it is indeed a nice, cheap(!) cool-down addition to Cleave.

(At only +1[W], it will not be too much use at higher levels, as the only thing that scales is a tiny AoE attached to that.)

    Default AA Epic Reincarnation

One option for this build is to epic reincarnate into an Elven AA with a base of fast movement and extended dragonmarks. AP will need to be spent to get to elven AA and on dragonmarks, then the AA capstone; from there, the rest of the AP (outside of acrobat's fast running) are flexible. The following was posted by Unbongwah here: (you could also max wisdom for paralyzing arrows)

I haven't made up my mind yet about this one, but this is the build I was alluding to in that other thread:

+23% run speed from Acrobat & barb Fast Movement

I wanted Killer too, but that means ditching a bunch of other Enhancements to free up enough APs. Also works great in FotW (Adrenaline+Slaying Arrow / Sniper Shot) or Crusader (esp. if you need extra heals). EDIT: if I skip DM and ditch Assassin enhs, I could do 14 elf (or HE) / 41 AA / 22 DWS / 3 Acro and get first two ranks of Killer (+15% Doubleshot). DPS-wise it's probably worth it but man I hate giving up my glowing tattoos!

I wanted Killer too, but that means ditching a bunch of other Enhancements to free up enough APs. Also works great in FotW (Adrenaline+Slaying Arrow / Sniper Shot) or Crusader (esp. if you need extra heals).
nice. Extend spell really works wonders with the dragonmarks too. This is good to have in this thread since the enhancements would be the same for when I do an ER into a bow-wielder (I have an eSapphire Sting, so why not?!!!). Plus it changes things up so gameplay does not become too static.

As long as I'm spamming your thread with flavor , here's a variant on that previous build I'm also considering:
    Code:

This build is specifically designed to run heroics and low-level epics. It was inspired both by a discussion in another thread about "how do you make an archer who doesn't rely on AA imbues?" and the fact you can't take the racial AA capstone until char lvl 25. It's also "aided" by elf Shadow Arrows' crit multiplier bonus still not applying, AFAIK, so you don't get as much DPS from it as you should. So I thought, "well, T5 DWS is pretty strong these days, so why don't we focus on that instead?" Hence adding Power Attack to access Ravager PA enhs which boost Heavy Draw another +3 dmg. With Heavy Draw+Imp PA, 4 Favored Enemies, and Favored Hunter, I would have +19 dmg vs FEs. Add in +40% Doubleshot (Killer+Strikes like Lightning) and +5 Ranged Power to round things out.

After lvl 25, I would probably LR into the other build in order to use racial AA instead.

    Hi Saekee,

I am currently adapting your build into a variation as i'm on my rogue life on deep gnome iconic focusing instead on int assassin, with enough points in harper to get Int to hit and damage and KtA, 3 AP to get run speed boost, 8 AP in mechanic for improved trap making. Still on level 14 as i am finishing up low level quests for favor (and TP) such i am currently at 1wiz/1barb/12rogue. If you need some report of deeds i will let you know once i get up there in epics. But i can report currently run speed and stealth is extremely fast even running backward allows some interesting grenades throwing action. Eldritch Strike indeed does not unstealth you but so far the force damage isn't great only 30-40 damage but can be consider as a cleave when needed.

It also open another possibility as well, if you invest in deep gnome weapon training, light picks become a very viable weapon to use almost equal to dagger/kukri build and i have two celestia to try things out as well.

hi Dalros, that sounds like an interesting build. There are great synergies with gnome and INT. I don't have access to gnomes but I suppose the PK sla is also INT DC-based? I like elf for the displacement-extend synergies but your modification has great merits.

I have a level 13 Prowler on wayfinder to test it--eldritch strike is for cleaves like you state--it is also a fun way to attack things/objects without breaking stealth too (e.g. you can 'assassinate' breakables and root walls, following up with the eldritch strike if they are still up).

I'd be happy to hear of your stories with it; at level 20, maybe solidify your AP expenditures and give the build your own title. The picks sound intriguing.

Here is a fun note: all faster sneaking enhancements stack. A thrower build with 12 rogue/6 monk/2 ranger really scuttles fast.

Oh yes, i have tested that combination makes a very nice did you just sneak faster than i can run comments.

And yes PK and prismatic spray is both int base dc, something i might try once i get the full AP expenditures, as for renaming it, nah its your build, i just rework to fit the idea i have. The credit is all yours as you started the build, i merely tinker with it. Thats where the fun is to me, to tinker and see what explodes... er i mean pop out... i mean..... *throws smoke bomb*

hah, no problem--just give it a new name and call it 'a Variation on the Prowler.' Music composers have a venerated history of doing this and it is a great form of flattery.

    Hi Saekee,

Abit of correction on feats that can be taken, Greater Two weapon fighting can't be taken at 15 due to requirement BAB +11 which is only +10 due to 13rogue is +9/ Wiz +0/Barb +1

I've reached level 16 now, been doing things slow since i'm finishing low quest with just using assassinate, mines and grenades. It's oddly fun setting like 4-10 damage mines and see them marching to their doom with noisemaker

Thank you! Gaaah that is annoying. Rogue BAB went through some weird boost there that breaks its natural progression (Rogues get an extra BAB if you look at that level range). I thought the barb level would make up for the wiz.
I have switched quicken with GTWF then.
What INT are you hitting right now and how are you doing it?

Also gear wise, i'm using deathnip and a cannith crafted Lightpick of blinding 4d6 light damage, of slashing 4d6 slashing damage of vampirism 2d2 healing, crit potential of 300 to 400 depending on melee power from measure the foe. Execute when used correctly procs extra 1.2k damage

sweet. A completionist toon? One advantage of INT rogues is that strategic combat lets you use any weapon.
