    Default Producer's Letter

    Greetings!

As we kick off summer, many things are going on behind the scenes in Dungeons and Dragons Online, and I wanted to talk about some of the fun things coming up for the game.

We have been doing a lot to combat lag in the game, and though we have improved the experience we have work to do. We are still looking into long lag spikes which we need to solve, and we are also working on some fixes for stacking effects that could be causing individual characters and the party they are traveling with to lag. Our investigations into server performance continue and this is our number one priority.

The next thing I wanted to talk about is some upcoming content; we are currently working on bringing you a new classic module experience! We are hard at work on our adaptation of Assault on the Slave Lords, originally presented in the A1 to A3 series of modules. We remember playing through the Slavers series fondly, and we want to bring these modules to life for our players with some of our own twists and turns. The dungeons will be offered at level 8 on Heroic, and will also have a CR 32 Legendary version as well.

As you probably know, we have already begun discussing the update to Cannith Crafting. Ever since we updated random loot players have been asking for an update to this crafting system, and the project is in full swing. It is a big system that will provide a good way to fill in gear holes as you level.

Players have asked about class passes, and the next two classes to be looked at will likely be Monk and Favored Soul. We are currently looking into the core code behind unarmed attacks and hand wraps to see if that needs to be revamped. We are also looking into giving Favored Soul its third tree. Both are big tasks, but we wanted players to know these are the next classes we are looking at once we are past Cannith Crafting.

We’d also like to offer the players another open enhancement tree (like Harper) at some point to open up more build options, and we are looking to see where that might fit in.

We were fairly happy with the Night Revels festival in the fall last year, and this year we will be looking to add more haunted dungeons a maybe some other surprises. The festival was fairly popular so we’d like to expand on it a bit. We would also like to revamp the rewards for the mimic festival and bring that back; maybe with rewards, based on player feedback, that are less random.

Another system we want to tackle is the augment system. Players have been asking for new augments, but the current incarnation of augments are created by hand as crafting interactions. We will be looking into the feasibility of moving existing and future augments into a new system that will work like the slotting system that our Legendary Greensteel crafting system uses. The technical complexity comes with how we will allow players to convert existing items to use new augments. If we can tackle these problems, then we can do some interesting things with augment slots and more regularly include augments as part of our ongoing loot.

The far future has a lot of promise, and looking past the end of the year we would definitely like to bring Tiefling and Aasimar to our players at some point. Tiefling in particular is a popular race for Dungeons and Dragons and we would like you to have those races as options for your characters. We will need to determine whether we plan on including tails on Tieflings, and how the horns of the race will interact with helmets. Both of these are interesting problems to tackle and we have already had some discussion about them even though these races would be fairly far into the future.

We just wanted to talk about the long term plans we will be looking into, and we wanted to say thanks for joining us in game.

Playable Kobold Race = money printing machine.

Please tell us why this isn't going to happen. Is it a legal rights issue?

    Looks great Sev~!

My opinion on Thiefling is leave the tail, but make work the horns! NPC and Monster Thieflings don't have tails in DDO anyways so I see no reason why the Player Race should.

Then a couple of WOOTS!,... Monk Wraps, WooT! FvS 3rd Tree, WooT! Mimic Event return, Double WooT! more Night Revels, WooT! Augment rework, WooT!

I guess this is how you will get players their extra AP like you talked about before because a new tree will spread the AP around a lot more. a new enhancement tree means its going to be just as powerful, if not more, than Harper.

the only way I would agree with this decision is if racials had a pass first like classes are currently.

You are the one choosing not to play alts.

Finally, monk pass. Thank you for letting us know that's on the docket after crafting.

The kobold would be built on an entirely new rig, which means all the armor in the game would have to be created for that body type from scratch. That's very hard to budget.

We have brainstormed other options, from kobolds needing to craft armor into a kobold version, or even that kobolds can't wear normal armor at all. We've also considered making kobolds a sort of hard mode way to play the game.

Please, no tails on Tieflings. Horns I'd be ok with but tails? No thanks.

    Aasimar? YES PLEASE!!

After nearly quitting the game due to the lag, I am very encouraged by this letter. You are hitting all the right points....lag, cannith crafting, broken monks, FVS pass, events, and augments. This will go a long ways towards making the game feel like it's not broken. I am very encouraged by this focus.

    A few suggestions:
    1. Be careful with your augment pass. You already abandoned the first augment system, and players really like the current augment system. When you describe going to a third augment system that is like shroud crafting, that make me cringe as that system is confusing and has not been well received. I would like the current system with more augment choices, which uses our current gear.
    2. When you tweak the events please update the gear and give people that have seen the events for several years a reason to run them again. People don't run risia, crystal cove, and a lot of the other events because they are stale and have not been updated. I bet you could add some cool augments and more gear selection to make the events fresh.
    3. Move up Aasimar to go with the FVS pass and third tree, that would be a very interesting direction to take the FVS class (but also make Aasimar appealing to Paladin, Sorcerer, and Warlock Enlighted Spirit).

    Post Thoughts

Glad to hear the developers are still focused on reducing lag. It was a real shame earlier this year when lag made most end game raids unplayable with a full party. Fortunately, their hard work has paid off with a much more pleasant in game experience. Keep it up!

A few thoughts on the outlook:

    1. Classic content both Heroic and Legendary keeps me coming back to DDO
    2. Definitely looking forward to the Cannith Crafting overhaul. Anything that can make deconstruction easier will be a bonus. Can a drop box be implemented similar to how we sell our unwanted random loot to vendors? For example, open up window for crafting machine, then slide ALL unwanted gear into the machine and pull the lever. Presto, the machine does all the work to figure out how to deconstruct everything and pays out essences (think of the coin machines in the supermarket where you can take your piggy bank full of coins and have it sort and count it all up and pay you back)!
    3. Proposed augment overhaul - please do NOT mimic the LGS augment system. The LGS augment system reminds me of old MS-DOS based games from the 80's with their course descriptions and lack of information. I find the current augment system flexible, easy to use, and is adaptable to both random loot and named items. Whatever direction is taken with it, please keep it that way.

All for Aasimar, though Tieflings have never really appealed to me. (And they will be fairly close to drow in terms of stats, so, meh.) I hope while you are considering horns and tails you also give Aasimar their due as well, though wings are unlikely some good skin color options and maybe halo effects, etc, as options would be nice. Pity it won't be happening anytime soon.

A new FvS and open enhancement line will be cool, as will seeing some more classic modules get adapted to DDO. Against the Giants G1-3 would be a great series to also see in DDO at some point, and it lends itself to continuing on into Descent into the Depths of the Earth D1-2, finally into Queen of the Demonweb Pits Q1. Though a second assault on Lolth might not be something you are keen on, though it would perhaps save on asset creation?

I never played the slave lords modules, so I'll reserve judgement on those. I was hoping for the desert of Anauroch.

Yay for monks and favored soul revamps in the future! I had rather hopped artificers would get their pass with the cannith crafting revamp, though, since it fits thematically.

As for tieflings and aasimar, that's awesome news; both could use the human model and animations with tieflings being thinner and having red-ish skin options while the aasimar could be slightly taller with new faces to represent their celestial looks. The tiefling problem could be solved with a cosmetic helmet/eye-wear given to tieflings upon character creation, and exclusive to the tiefling race. Why bother with a helmet when you can have horns, and if you didn't want the horns you could easily just put on a helmet, some goggles, or another cosmetic item. The tail would have to be hard-coded into the character model, complete with animations, but if you could pull it off it would be totally awesome. None of the other tieflings in the game have tails, though, so it's not completely necessary. I would totally buy a tiefling to remake my warlock or have fun with a paladin vanguard aasimar.

I saw a thread and someone suggested a playable Archon race, I think that would be amazing as am iconic as the favored soul class. Please do this. the iconic casters are a little bland but with the possibility of a third fvs tree this would fit in well.

One thing I would like to see addressed is the quality of content released in-game. The last couple of updates released were of poor quality and FILLED with bugs that sometimes made content unplayable.

Also, I would like to suggest that you should try and balance out the release of the new Favored Soul tree with Cleric Domains. You don't need to release them both at once, but it should be the next class pass that is released after the new Favored Soul tree. I recommend you go over notes and player suggestions to bring the best out of cleric domains, as they can be tricky sometimes! And don't be afraid to ask what we want out of it, im sure you could get some awesome discussion out of it!

So they're at least on the discussion table.

I know Tieflings, Gnomes and Kobolds have been the top three <realistic> choices for new PC races - tho not necessarily in that order. If Kobolds have to have a heftier price tag because of the extra code wrok, I'm okay with that. I can't speak for my Kobold Fan Club brethren and sisters on that, however.

distraction: Hm. Kobold Fan Club... KFC... = Proof positive that Kobolds do in fact taste like chicken.

Edit: There are a lot of plans and dreams lined out in this letter. Given the time range it's looking at, I'm putting a LOT of what has been written on back burner, wait-n-see status.

Kobold Konsortium (now level 100) fully supports this endeavor! #DDOKobolds16!
