EK spellsword & unarmed attacks

EK spellsword toggle is not working on my unarmed attacks. I guess it is because they are not typed as weapons.
Anyone found a workaround? Maybe if I equip blank wraps? (It is for my nude run). Or equip a weapon and unequip? Will play with this and if I find something, will report back unless folks have a better idea.

also: does the light damage from KoTC cores affect unarmed attack?

Ok answered my own question.

For those interested, you need a weapon equipped for the EK spellsword to be active. For my vow of poverty run, I just have some blank handwraps equipped in order to activate it.
