'Your loot is your loot' never meant 'proxy rolling is okay'.
It meant, if you pulled something:
you don't have to put it up for roll,
you can pass it to a friend or guildie with no explanation,
you can auction it off to the highest bidder,
you can take it even if you might never use it,
you can vendor it, or,
let it rot because you hate everyone in the party.
It was about stuff you pulled, not stuff passed to you.
The alternative meaning of it as: 'proxy rolling is and always was cool' is stupidity or willful misinterpretation; quoter's pick.
TL;DR - that sucks OP; try and get into not getting your hopes up unless you actually pull the item yourself.
