Unhappy Cannot roll character, constant DC

I used to play DDO and recently decided to pick it up again to play with a friend. We've decided to roll on Argonnessen. For the last 4 hours I have been trying to roll a character. First off, just loading the character creation screen takes a long time. I can get through selecting classes, races, and that I want to customize my build, and as soon as I hit the 'next' button after races the game stops responding. The music plays for a bit longer until it, too, fades away. Eventually the build creation screen loads and I can quickly arrange my stats and feats to my liking, at which point it again freezes when it's time to customize my character's appearance. If I've made it this far without disconnecting, i can usually get the appearance sorted out and type in a name before hitting enter. That's when I get a lovely popup that says "Please wait". Somewhere between 1 to 4 minutes later, the game crashes and I get another popup telling me that the game lost connection to the server.

This is the same computer I used to play the game for several years, up until 2013 or so. I have updated all my device drivers. I have done every windows update. I have restarted my computer several times. I have rebooted my router. The game automatically does that pre-caching thing. I turned all the graphics to potato settings, the only way to turn them lower would be to shut the game off. Does anyone have any advice?

I have always experienced certain lag moments during character creation but never had it result in a crash. It sounds to me like there is a timing out issue somewhere between you and Turbine. I would suggest looking in to port forwarding on your router which has been a problem for some folks in the past. Here is a link, and I believe the same information applies to DDO even though this is a LOTRO technical support link. Good luck!

I'm redownloading the game right now, but I'll try the port forwarding thing when it's done. I might not have much luck with it since following the instructions so far gets me stuck at the "Right-click the connection that you use for the Internet, and then click Properties." part. There's nothing that responds to a right-click. I'm using Windows 7, if that makes any sort of difference.

Sorry I can't be of more help. When I set up port forwarding on my old router it was from the router control panel. Try googling "setting up port forwarding on X router" where X is your router model.

I don't actually have a router. I took a closer look and what I've got is a modem and a switch, so my roommate and I can both use the net at the same time.

Try allowing TurbineLauncher.exe to have incoming and outgoing traffic through your firewall.
