Default Darkstars: A Deepwood Stealth-Focused Star Thrower

So I started working on playing a Shuricannon last year, and despite the excitement for the style, I was and remain more partial to things that are constant, predictable and controlled. Something the original Shuricannon did without, having it's power in Shiradi Procs and On-Crits. It's an excellent build, I am not knocking it whatsoever, and I was very interested in the "fire rate as damage multiplier" approach. As I looked at the trees, and as Deepwood got reworked to usefulness, I started to think of other effects or powers that might be multiplied by this profound throwing speed available to the star thrower.

Sneak Attack dice seemed obvious, even back when Deepwood was lame I had dreams of making someone who could throw sneak dice at a distance. At the time, however the tree didn't offer enough to build a star thrower. Now, I think, that has changed. With 2xDex to throw more stars, lots of available doubleshot and up to 9 sneak attack die without gear or EDs, plus the ability to engage sneak attack from 30ft+10 Meters from Deepwood + 20 Meters from Deepwood + 5 Meters from Mechanic = 45 Meters of range. The first build was designed around the mistaken notion that since the bonus Manyshot offers is doubleshot, that there was a chance it worked with stars. I've been corrected, but the build has a certain potential about it that I'd like to see if I can retain.

The other is focused for 10kStars but since its low on Monk levels and can't afford buckets of wisdom, its gonna be anemic at best.

I dream of putting this in Shadowdancer for more sneak dice and dex-triggered powers, along with an epic moment almost guaranteed to explode on every throw.

Feedback appreciated, tips on making this work more so.

Just spitballing here, but what do you think of halfling monk 12 / rgr 6 / rog 2? The extra monk lvls get you Imp Evasion, Master of Forms, and more Doubleshot from 10K Stars (60%). Rgr 6 is for all the DWS goodies and ranged feats; you can even mix in Manyshot since there's no Doubleshot penalty anymore and Imp Weapon Finesse grants DEX to dmg. Rog 2 gets you trap skills and access to tier-2 enhancements like +2d6 SAs, Venomed Blades (which I think works w/throwers), and Sharpshooter. If you have Harper you can also invest in KtA and Versatile Adept for more dmg.

Enhancements: I was thinking 40 APs DWS (all T5s), 17 APs halfling (max Guile + Master Thrower), then...not sure after that, haven't thought that far ahead.

I'd not call the idea crazy, but I think its gonna lose a crucial part. I've never been able to judge distance in the game, but I am sincerely concerned about dumping 15Meters off the sneak range. Helf gets 10 meters from elf cores and the fourth DWS core is a sneak dice and 5 meters. While halfling gains 3 SA dice to replace 2 lost from rogue dilly but once you factor in losing one from Deepwood its a wash. Abundant Step and Imp Evasion are both attractive, but Grandmaster is not so much for me.

How well would a 2nd life be able to spread Dex/Wis/Int/Con, do you think? KTA, 10K and a Dex build are going to be a costly combination to my estimation.

Im trying to work this out as I level him up so I can TR into his real build, but so far I've found 10K stars nice but not crucial. I focus primarily on Dex and while the boost from 10K is noticeable, I haven't yet come to a point where I'd redirect points from Dex(always on boost) to Wis(Burst effect) for it. Current progress build has 12 Monk and probably 22-25 wis(hes 15 with AH gear but I don't remember his starting Wis) and half the time I save 10K because its not worth swapping to water stance to regen the Ki. Either Im missing something, or I just don't appreciate the burst like others do. Is seriously pondered for a minute, going with the 1st rogue-esque build and just ignoring burst powers entirely, but I'm hoping for better effect in the late game.

Edit: Almost forgot, Venomed Blades works on Shuriken, I can confirm from Drow. But I believe the Mechanic SA dice aren't applicable to thrown if you read the enhancement carefully.

Upon further reflection, I dont think you are as wrong as I thought. I discussed some of this with Sgt_Hart on Vent and your point with 12 monk granting significant survivability and burst-damage bonuses makes a lot of sense. It remains to be seen if I can do without the boost to range, his current life will have the same SA range so I should be able to evaluate it around level 20. I will try to update this with that info when it comes. If you are correct on the range being enough, I'll be excited for the extra SA dice. If I can't spare the range, the next best thing is to lean on Ranger for the extra range, get 8 monk for what 10K I can afford and try to make it work.

Tried again after thinking about the build some more, and after playing the current life with its advantages and problems.

Skips trying for 10kStars, which would be anemic with only 12 monk levels anyway. Gets 18 sneak dice by my calculations at +25 meters sneak ranger for 35 total.
Gets the traps and Crippling Strike(since a Dex-based Halfling Monk/Rog/Rgr is probably okay without imp evasion). Has the option to get KTA if i get really driven for burst damage, otherwise he gets a damage Action Boost that's not too bad. He'll be soft and a bit easier to hit than the current life but he'll have all monk stances. I'm thinking a possible trade of Grandmaster for Deflect Arrows but thats up in the air.

Might technically belong in a different place now, but it's under the same build plan as the original.

Might technically belong in a different place now, but it's under the same build plan as the original.
why 5 ranger? is that for the tier 5 in Deepwood? I feel like the cutoff point is 6 for sniper shot, and a nice cutoff point for rogue is also 13 (1d6 more sneak and special ability). Rogue 12 gets access to the feat Improved Sneak attack too as you have listed. I am not sure Combat Archer is worth it for throwers since the bonus to +W is miniscule--I think OC would be better but that is your call.

I tried a monk/ranger/rogue thrower recently and decided that it snuck too slowly... I think I was 9 monk/6 ranger/5 rogue. It performed well and this was before the changes to 10K (9 monk for improved evasion, 6 ranger for sniper shot, 5 rogue originally for Tier 5 mechanic). Since it was slow to sneak, I got sick of it quickly for stealth stuff and reincarnated to a pure assassin.

You need rog 12 to get Imp Sneak Atk; you need monk 3 to get Adv Ninja Training; you need rgr 6 for Sniper Shot. You obviously can't have all three, so it's a question of tradeoffs.

I'd also like to see if anyone is reviving the rog 13 / monk 6 builds with maybe a rgr 1 splash. Something like 39 APs Mechanic (T5s), 23 APs Assassin (max Killer), 1 APs DWS (+5m PBS, +1d6 SA), 17 APs halfling (Master Thrower, max Guile). [No APs left for Ninja or Harper, unfortunately.] Plenty of SA dice: 7d6 rog lvls + 3d6 Assassin + 1d6 DWS + 1d6 Mechanic + 3d6 halfling + 3d6 ISA feat = 18d6 SA. Base Doubleshot is 10% (Mechanic) + 10% (ED feat) + 20% (Killer) = 40%. 10K Stars caps out at +30% Doubleshot, but it's still "free" extra DPS on this build.

CA is +1.5 base dmg with shurikens; not much, but every little bit helps.

FYI, OP, according to Eth Haste is providing +22% Ranged Alacrity again, so you no longer need Blinding Speed on ranged toons to get it. Which means you can afford OC, ISA, and CA as your epic feats.

Great points. You need to spend some AP in ninja to get ANT though for the extra stars.
There is a nice tradeoff between 10K and sneak damage which helps build diversity.

Ah nertz, knew I was forgetting something. Well, guess you'd have to split APs between Assassin & Ninja then.

With regard to haste. I appreciate the tip, I've now got to decide how to get haste reasonably. I might take OC over CA, it just hadn't occurred to me.

With regard to your discussion, I believe Mechanics sneak Dice only apply to crossbows, or at least that's what the text claims. It's frustrating .

My build, luckily has some flexibility, for a relatively low cost I could swap Grandmaster forms for Deflect Arrows and lower the cool down in Tempest. I can take Combat Expertise if I find the AC desirable(its been useful hitherto, but losing wis build might weaken that). Ninja spy gets sneak.move speed, although maybe you thought it was still too slow, in Wind Stance hell be alright though.

My main concern is defense. He'll get UMD and he kites well, but I don't know if he can survive hit #1 as the new build stands. Some Prr from a ri g, some conceal and stuff will be nice, but he's still in a weird place with a few monk levels and the rest in a light armor class he can't leverage for defense. Best I can think is AC/Dodge focus and hope that goes with Evasion and just generally good saves to survive

since you only have 3 monk levels, consider dumping forms altogether and wearing light armor for its PRR and the perks from the deepwood tree. Even uncentered, ANT functions

Parasitic armor's Xoriat solipsism functions on ranged attacks--no save; great trash cc. Just don't put it on male toons...

Does it really? Oh I am ALL over that, I'll have to do a rebuild with that in mind.

Tried again, this time with light armor in mind, I like this idea even more. Loses 4 dex and Sting of the Ninja, gains 3 feats and light armor.
    Thanks for the tip Saekee

With 36 UMD Heal scrolls are in reach with a CHA item, that and Wand and Scroll Mastery means he's got real potential for survivability and party utility. If I can even occasionally whip Raise Dead, then I can turn his evasive nature and ability to escape into a boon for the party. I am last man up far more often on his current build than I'd ever guess. If ANY appreciable portion of that shows up next life, Its gonna be phenomenal.

You want precise shot and IPS in there, perhaps as the level 15 and 18 feats. Your UMD will be fine with all those rogue levels; just use swap gear (or a charisma/umd booster in the offhand like Flameward while holding the scrolls and put these in the shortcut bar together).

edit: for your rogue feat, take Improved Evasion, not crippling strike. Improved Evasion is key for evasion builds like this one.

Im torn over Imp Evasion vs Crippling Strike. With max Dex I sorta thought he might get away without it, Crippling Strike looks lovely for making mobs helpless, but I can also see the advantage of just closing off the problem of Reflex at all.

I'm probably not going to end up with IPS on this build, for two reasons.
    1. I don't know that this toon is going to function well in a circumstance where hes laying hurt on that many guys at once. Stealth and hitting 5 guys at once doesn't seem super effective.
    2. I play with a controller and while I CAN select enemies far away, I have to tab-through to them and it's kind of tedious, which makes me want to build around that if at all possible.

If you are making the case that it WON'T be a problem to use IPS and stealth, perhaps I'll consider integrating it.
I did, however just do a new design that dropped Head Shot(which has a junk DC since I have 5 ranger levels) along with 1 sneak dice from Ninja Spy and a few other points from elsewhere to get Deflect Arrows down to 2 secs and add Haste Boost/Sprint Boost. I'm not sure if Haste boost works on ranged but I have long enjoyed it on TWFs.

Actually, on stealthy toons, IPS is even easier to use because you can take your time selecting the enemies! They will probably be immobile too so PIN on multiple mobs and pow--all dead quickly. The stat STR damage is not worth it.

I've been working on a build like this, and I'm thoroughly convinced that the ideal split is something along the lines of Ranger 6 / Monk 7 / Rogue 7.

You still get to a total of 20 meters extra sneak attack range, which is MORE than enough for you to not have to worry about being in it as you close the distance.

You get the burst and defensive benefits from the Monk, and sneak attack plus a bunch more DEX from the rogue.

I've played a lot of variations of throwers, and here's the rub - the ones that build for OMGLEETDPS are good, but the most successful ones are like the Shuricannon 2.0 that build specifically for max dexterity. The reason is because, yes, sneak attack is a wonderful thing when every attack basically applies it three times, but even better than that are CC abilities. Even with just the passive abilities such as blind from celestia, deception and improved deception on your body, and you're going to be sneak attacking everything like there's no tomorrow. Include a few of the plethora of other wonderful CC options we have available and nothing is going to be attacking you - and even when it does, you'll have insane miss chances.

IPS is absolutely insanely worth it, especially on a build like this, because hitting five guys at once means crowd controlling five guys at once and effectively applying your sneak attack fifteen times per throw.

Yes, you miss out on a few goodies, but those goodies don't come even close to what you gain.
