The glowing eyes were to celebrate the 300 issues of the chronicle but there was no publicity in chronicle 300 or 299. Lame.

The 300th Chronicle had a picture of a hallway, with a suggestion to "Walk down the hall" where the question of the week usually is. The picture of of the hallway was a clickable link, and if you kept clicking (or walking down the hallway) you got to the treasure... which was the code. There was at least one fairly explicit hint in the thread, as well.
