    Default Heavy Armored Archer

I always seem to playing to a different drummer than Turbine. Right on the eve of them releasing updates to the Ranger Trees, I am considering TRing my Ranger into something else. Such is life.

I am about to complete my third Ranger life on my archer. He has always been a Elven Ranger Long Bow user and I want to continue that trend. Rangers are fun and I will probably TR another character into a ranger to try out the new trees, but right now I'm trying to plan out my Archer's next life. This is one idea I'm knocking around.

    Fighter 20 / Epic 8

Using Kensai Keen Edge to expand crit range and taking advantage of the Attack speed bonuses in the Core 18 and 20. I would assume Strength based would be the way to go. The fighter Feats should give me everything the Ranger gets for free + some.

Advantage: Heavy armor and the increased PRR that comes with it. More Hit Points. Pretty much only two Stats will matter, Strength and Constitution.

Disadvantages: Lack of evasion, no self healing (except for whatever I have unlocked in EDs), Fewer skills., no AA embues, no conjure arrows

As I look at it on paper, Im not feeling convinced its a strong idea. So I want some thoughts.

    1. Do you think, equipment being equal, a strength based fighter archer will have more or less DPS than a Ranger AA (whether it be strength or dex based)

    2. Do think the Heavy armor would be more or less survivable in Epics than a Ranger with light armor but with evasion and some cure spells.

    thanks

Elf + Archer in the same sentence mate, gives you AA anyway. Elves can unlock the tree via racial AP and you still get conjure arrows, imbues etc. Granted since you want the figher t5 you will miss out on T5 AA (slayer arrows etc) but you'll still get access to the tree.

Fighter absolutely makes a decent ranger feat wise, kensei I feel leaves something to be desired still though. The crit range is nice, but other than that there isn't much to be enjoyed there. You *could* be perfectly fine in a pure fighter archer, but I feel something funny about it too. I dunno, I feel hesitant about playing it too.

Maybe like a fighter/x with heals, being an elf and using the Elven AA tree as your main tree? FvS or something with the Silver Flame for some longbow bonuses?

Or you could look at 14 Pally/6 Ranger, Holy Sword + AA stuff, good enough heals?

Elven AA is way to expensive in terms of APs in my opinion.

Now that's an interesting idea. I had considered Paly for HS, but couldn't figure out how to make it work with the Feats. I wonder about attack speed with this build though. I will look at the trees and see if I can make it work.

I looked at the trees with the idea of a 14 Pally/6 Ranger split. I like the concept, but I'm not sure. the main issue I see is the loss of doubleshot. The pure fighter will be able to get 21% double shot from core 3 and core 6 kensai enhancements. The 14 Pally/6 Ranger will not have this. However, the HS will benefit from not only an expanded crit range, but also an increase in crit damage. I may build both ideas on Lam when its back up and test them out.

The doubleshot loss hurts, but at the same time Multishot significantly decreases the need for it. While active +1 minute after use, doubleshot is dropped to 0 anyways.

Another option is 14 Paladin/6 Monk. If you play it right, probably the strongest longbow build out there atm. Holy Sword + Earth Stance for awesome crits, evasion, 10k Stars AND Multishot. I can't recall the exact build off the top of my head, but I saw it up a while ago. I'm sure someone more versed in the ways of monkchers would be able to help out better for this option

Something about wanting to reach 42 Wisdom by the end, also wanting some dex for Combat Archery among others. You'd probably want a base of at least 16 in Dex and Wis, depending on what tomes you have. Master of Forms for crits with Earth is a must as well, iirc. Bladeforged works well with this build since that way it starts at L15 (well on its way to having both 10k stars and HS) and having reconstruct SLA. Plus they're good at taking hits from slashing

I think it's something along the lines of Str for damage, Wis to hit/10k stars bonus, Dex needs to be unbuffed 21, and con for hp's. Cha/Int are dumps

I think overall you could do fine as a ranged pure fighter. Your strength would certainly be higher with kensai and stalwart trees bonuses. Getting 2 or 6 ranger levels could alleviate some problems though. Still a interesting experiment to go pure. Don't forget weapon focus and specialization feats adding base damage and ranged power.

Get Keen Edge, then get just enough out of the Elven AA tree for morphic arrows to get pulverizer on your arrows. Use pinion and you end up with.... 13-20/x3 I think?

I've run a Ranger/monk before so I'm familiar with the monk archer builder. It does require good scores in Wisdom and dexterity as well as Strength and Constitution. Wouldn't be my first choice, but certainly not my last.

Pulverizer and Keen edge do not stack so it would be 15-20. Still, that's not a bad crit range. I still feel Elven AA is expensive. Even if Pulverizer and Keen Edge did stack. I'm not sure it would be worth spending 25% of my APs just to get blunt ammo. (10pts to open Tier 3 in Elf tree + 4 for AA + 5 to open 2nd core of AA + 1 for Morphic Arrows = 20 points) I'm already spending 30+ points to get Keen Edge. If they stacked, I'd probably try it since Enhancements are easy to change, though.

Yep, it would be an interesting experiment. And if I don't like it I can always TR at 20 and get a Fighter past life.

But the Paly idea, even with a split, is sounding pretty good due to the great saves and self healing.

Elf arcane archer as a fighter of course...you just want to get it to the point of conjure arrows, focusing primarily on Kensai. I would suggest going a few cleric levels for even more damage and at least minimal self healing. Ideally perhaps 2 ranger 4 cleric 14 fighter just to cut out the need to waste 4 aps on AA. It depends if your heart is set on pure or if you allow yourself to MC.

I run a 12/8 Fighter/Wizard using the EK/AA tree as well as using the Elf racial for Grace (Dexterity for hit/damage). Doing this also means I don't need Bow Strength as the Dex to damage overrides it.

I went medium armor to strike a balance between PRR and Dodge.

The Wizard levels give me access to a nice pool of SP, buff like Tensor's to get a higher BaB earlier, displacement, haste etc. Also using the EK tree I have access to a melee cleave as well as an elemental imbue. Improved Shield and Mage Armor also round this out for increased defense. I don't go much deeper then a single imbue and the Improved Shield.

I don't use the Kensai tree on this build, but I did use those enhancements when I was a 8/6/6 Ftr/Mnk/Wiz. It was ok, but It still didn't feel right to me.

Now I leverage the AA tree as my primary but during the level-up process the EK tree was my primary as it gave me the melee abilities needed to supplement the Archer damage.

This type of build also made Flame Arrow Wands more accessible at lower levels giving me a source of an additional +1d6 fire damage. You combine that with the imbue from the EK stance an arrow does a fair amount of damage at low levels.

I don't really mind Multi-classing. I was looking at Fighter 20 because of the doubleshot bonuses.

I see the benfit of 2 lvls of Ranger and I see that 4 lvls of cleric would give me some minor healing, but how does the 4 lvls of Cleric increase the damage?

That looks like an interesting build. I've played a few different versions of the EK. It can be fun. And in some respects, its the ultimate "Arcane" Archer. I may put that on the back burner and try it on a future life. Makes me wonder if I could reach completionist on this guy as an archer in every life.

I know this isn't fighter at all, but have you considered Warpriest + AA? The Wis to hit feat ain't only for Monks; a cleric using that feat, maybe dipping one level into ranger for t1 imbue, returning arrows, and treating all bows as implements, and bow strength. Clerics get heavy armor, the feat gives you Wis to hit, and with Str to damage, you don't need Dex at all, just Wis, Str, and Con. Warpriest gives a bunch of +1s with favored weapons, which combines well with the AA core 1, which makes all bows implements.

I would try Paladin over fighter for a few reasons - Holy sword, self heals, and saves.

Below is a Deepwood/AA Paladin build that two handed fighting for AOE damage and is intended to twist in momentum swing and lay waste from LD while DC is the main destiny. I put 16 ap in AA for fire arrows.

I would advise anyone before taking any fighter/Barbarian/rogue lives to take three lives as Paladin first. Healing amp is a big deal when you reach epics and can not invest completely into heal as a non-caster when you want to start epic self healing. And when you take those three paladin lives, take 3 epic past lives in divine to amp your positive energy spell power. That will be a good foundation to start with for almost every future life thereafter. It will increase your survivability a lot. You can even start making non pale master non forged arcanes.

In fact it's my opinion if you want to take a non caster past epic you should splash even a single caster class in just to maximize your spells and get the spell power you need. Fighter 18/1 wizard/1 FVS or Cleric would work. With the Wizard level primarily to get maximize.
