Angry Nothing but problems after upgrading to windows 10

Foolish me, I upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 about a week after launch and have had nothing but problems with DDO (and nothing else) since. Immediately after updating, I started experiencing extremely long load timea and zone in crashing 25-33% of the time; I started keeping a second window open so I could relogin fast enough to keep up with PUGs. Eventually I got tired of that, and uninstalled/reinstalled DDO. That's when the real problems started; now I can log in and play once after every reinstall, but I still crash. When trying to relog, I receive Game Error 201: Can't open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them.

I've run several malware scans (per suggestions on this error, all of which appear to be at least 3+ years old) and tried running as administrator with no luck. All I can do is reinstall the game, log in once successfully and then get the error again, forcing me to reinstall again to play for one login. Result: I can play DDO ONE TIME every reinstall.

    Anything I'm missing?

I couldn't get past selecting your server and got the 201 error every time. I reinstalled DDO 3x before I figured it could be upgrading to Windows 10 that was the problem. im computer illiterate so went back to Windows 8.1 and reinstalled DDO. haven't had any problems since. I know it has something to do data files needing permission, but everything looked good to me going by what I googled. I didn't like Windows 10 anyways.

You are the one choosing not to play alts.

Casual player now investing way less than I used to into the game, playing 1-3 months at a time and still want nothing to do with Reaper. #improvepuggrouping#alldifficultiesmatter

Run DDO with Admin access, you can do this by right clicking on the shortcut and selecting Properties, from there select the Compatibility tab and tick the box near the bottom which say to run it as Administrator and click OK. Now try again and see what happens, when you downloaded DDO did you do it using the installer from Turbine? If so then check the link in my signature called Download DDO.

The problem lies in Turbines stupid installer which doesn't download the needed .DAT files most of the time, failing that running as Admin should fix the issue. I had a similar problem with W10 and found that I had to run it as Admin even though my account on the computer is an Admin account I still had to elevate it for it to run properly.

I should have mentioned initially: Yes, I have tried running as admin.

Do the DAT files actually exists at all in your installation folder? I assume they do since you can log in once but then have the issue so can you confirm that they are there before login and after? Sounds like something very hinky is going on somewhere.

I've since uninstalled again to use the files Stoner81 posted above. I would assume so, too, as I am always able to log in and play just once for a bit after the reinstall. Then after the next inevitable DC when I try to log back in, I get the 201 error.

So, as usual I finished the install and was able to enter for a bit. Now when I try to relog back in, I get a TurbineLauncher.exe System error that says, "The program can't start because QtWebKit4.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. There are others that say Q5Xml4.dll, QtGui4.dll, QtNetwork4.dll are missing as well. I guess I'll try reinstalling so I can play for 5 minutes again.

Just going to continue to post errors as they pop up because I'm bored.

Next time you uninstall the game manually check the installation folder after the uninstall and delete it if it is still present. After that check the link in my signature called "Download DDO" and download those files and use them to install the game and update it and try running it and see if you get the same issues, if you do have the same/similar issues then there is possibly something seriously wrong imho.

Maybe you are running some crappy and aggressive anti-virus that mis-detects & deletes the files you list?

I've uninstalled via regular uninstall, Revo uninstaller, etc., then scrubbed for anything and everything that might be left over. Each time I get the same outcome; I can play once after reinstalling/repairing, but not again. I've reinstalled and/or repaired using the files in your link and an old set of hi-res install files I found on a spare HD from 2012. I've confirmed the .dll files it says are missing are really present; I've tried deleting them and re-adding them, nothing has worked. I don't have any malware running other than the Windows default.

The workaround I've found is to not use the regular shortcut that DDO gives to launch the game, but to navigate into the Dungeons & Dragons Online Program folder and launch the game from the dndlauncher application. I have no idea why dndlauncher knows the dll files are there.

I'm sorry that this strange and debilitating issue has cropped up for you. I've been taking a look at this the last couple days but have yet to reproduce it. I'll keep poking at it but wanted to let you know that your post has been seen by QA and is being investigated. In the meantime, if you can think of any more relevant information or if any new developments occur I'd love to hear about them.

This is a wild stab in the dark, but after you've uninstalled/reinstalled DDO, and its got itself fully up to date for that ill fated 1st log on... have you made sure Akami netsession is uninstalled? I've certainly heard of it doing odd things from time to time, but personally I uninstall it anyway because I dont' trust 'em. But its a separate program, and maybe it just got borked when you upgraded to 10.

Definitely make sure it's uninstalled before you reinstall DDO anyway.

Default Try Copying the Game Folders

Yeah, it kind of sounds like anti-virus (or W10) is deleting files after running. As a test, you might try copying all of your DDO game folders (after re-installing) to a different directory or even a thumb-drive as a back-up. Then, when the error occurs again, re-copy the "back-up" folders into the original directory (or delete original folders/copy back-up folders) and see if you can run w/o actually re-installing. And/or once the error occurs, compare the original folders to the back-up folders and see what differences there are (e.g. missing files). If comparing indicates files are missing, then obviously something is deleting them.

You could also try backing-up your registry (if such a thing is even possible anymore) and restoring it after the error to see if the registry is being corrupted.

Have you tried a "system restore" after the error, but before re-installing? Annoying, but that would point to something changing the system after running.

If copying the back-up folders (or system restore) works, then at least you have a work-around that's not quite as annoying as re-installing.

Not sure if it is related but I had a problem on my laptop where I had to have an external mouse plugged in for everything to work correctly.

We have to get an older computer, update there, and then copy the updated files onto our computers.

Trying to update on our computers just results in an error after 33%. Always. PITA when there is an update and then a couple of hotfixes!!

I was getting the 201 error after installing w10. What worked for me was downloading the game via the download while you play option. After that, I have had no issues.

I had this exact issue when I upgraded from 8 to 8.1.

After trying everything under the sun, I stumbled across a comment on the Steam boards.

    http://steamcommunity.com/app/206480...3032840196723/

Specifically, disabling "Smartscreen" fixed my problem.

However, once I upgraded to 10 - DDO worked just fine, regardless of the "Smartscreen" setting.
