It is actually very important to uninstall AKam before installing DDO,
it will reinstall itself properly automatically; however if you don't uninstall Akam,
before reinstalling DDO, you will auto crash DDO every single time you try to play it,
    during the initial loading screen.

It sounds like some sort of hardware error, I'd say drive/database formatting --- though a drive might be dying.

Though it's certainly very possible your Windows installation itself is bad, either because you upgraded from a previous installation with some errors that you were unaware of, or from just plain old bad luck.

Personally, what I'd do is data backup, format C:, clean install 10. If the bad behaviour continued, then start trying to find which hardware is faulty.

Reinstalling 7 is also an option.

Might also make sure that the "c:\users\(user name)\documents\dungeons and dragons online" folder is set to allow you to write. I'm not sure how or why that cause any issues, but it helped me get DDO working after I upgraded to Win 10. You might also try disabling Windows Defender in the Update & Security settings and see if that helps. Either way, good luck.

Default I had something that looked somewhere similar after re-instaling Win7 to refresh my P

I had something pretty much the same as you describe after swiped my pc and reinstalled windows from the manufacturer backup.

I had to first switch off windows defender, and then go in deep and dig in its settings to switch off the part of windows defender that did not switch itself off even if told to switch defender off (because I use a different firewall). It showed itself as switched off, but blocked several files from the pc non the less in the background. After switching several options around in the detailed menues of its settings, I managed to completely disable it and since then I have not had any trouble with DDO anymore.

As you have Win 10 now, it could be something different, but I ran into a similar thing after upgrading my wife's pc to win10 where it still had a part of defender active even if I did not want that (and it does not give you options to allow things as it runs into them, maybe it does notify, but I am not even sure of that).

In these cases running as admin didn't change anything, i went into disabling all but minimum auto-start programs and manually disabled the defender from starting to get there I think.

yes if u cant seem to fix the problem u will need to do a fresh install of windows 10, if u have a windows.old file after the fresh install its best not to use any of the stuff from it, just delete it and re download ur programs. formatting the drive will make it so none of ur files are saved as a windows.old file

u will need to download the win 10 media creation tool so u can make a USB or disc installation,
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...n-tool-install

when making the USB or disc u will need to know which win 10 product u have. u can find this by clicking the control panel and then click system

if u upgraded from WIN 7 or 8 skip any of the product serial numbers when doing the install, all u need to do, once u finish installing is to click the control panel and then click system and it should automatically activate ur copy again

for more info see the link to the tool

Windows 10 has a problem with making some file folders read only, even though you have control(rights) over them. I would check to see if you can save a simple file to any of DDO folders.

I had problems with saving files or even modifying files in folders that said I had the ability to read, write, delete or modify files in a given folder. If you do have the issue, you need to redo your permissions

Default dont upgrade to windows 10 if you want to play DDO!!!

Eventually I got tired of that, and uninstalled/reinstalled DDO. That's when the real problems started; now I can log in and play once after every reinstall, but I still crash. When trying to relog, I receive Game Error 201: Can't open the data files. Check that they exist and that you have permission to write to them.

I've run several malware scans (per suggestions on this error, all of which appear to be at least 3+ years old) and tried running as administrator with no luck. All I can do is reinstall the game, log in once successfully and then get the error again, forcing me to reinstall again to play for one login. Result: I can play DDO ONE TIME every reinstall.

    Anything I'm missing?

I know it has something to do data files needing permission, but everything looked good to me going by what I googled. I didn't like Windows 10 anyways.
i guess this is a lesson to any one that wants to use the latest windows OS and play DDO, i have tried every thing in this thread with no positive result and also research and tried mentioned fixes in with in the DDO forums, i have tried most of the mention options in these threads even though most of them are 3-5 years old and still get the following error when trying to log in:

the only thing i haven't tried yet is a complete re-install of the game or going back to windows 7, which i don't really want to do due to download limits and the fact that the free win 10 upgrade offer will expire after a year.
the mention of having to re-install windows 10 or reverting to win 7-8 is preposterous tubine should be working on fixing this issue not palming us off to a re-install, i could spend a lot time re-installing windows 10 and still have the same issue. is there a actual fix for this?? or does tubine insist that we not use win 10 which would undoubtedly be a big issue for the future.

The DAT files are missing from your install of DDO, if you have another computer with DDO installed copy and paste the files over to your computer and that should allow you to update to the latest version and play the game. You can also have a look at the link in my signature called "DDO-Wrapper".

no good, still getting the same 201 error. im not app smart, but have noticed the following:

no matter how many times i un-check the read only box, it still shows up as checked when i re-open the properties for the turbine folder?
is this a issue and if so how can i resolve it?
other wise i am open for any suggestions as i have no idea what to do.

thanks for giving me some options to try.
Ive also tried you ddo-Wrapper and it wouldn't go past this point:

was installing windows net framework for around 2 hours before i shut it down from task manager, now the launch dont run at all.
anything else you could give me to try would be great.

DDO-Wrapper does not need the .NET Framework to work and that screen is from the original installers which is in post #2 of my DDO-Wrapper thread, DDO-Wrapper has different screens. I would suggest running Windows Update and installing everything it finds since this will include the .NET Framework.

Try disabling UAC and see if that helps.

Try DDO-Wrapper and see if that works for you, as I said you used the original install files since the screen shot you showed is from that.

The screen shot you linked to is from the original files provided by Turbine which are in the DDO-Wrapper then in post #2 so you will have probably downloaded those. Those links should still work perfectly fine and it will try to install the .NET framework so as I said run Windows Update to get them all and then run the installer again. Once it installs you will then have to update the game which should happen automatically when you run the launcher.

    Hi stoner,
I have tried to install ddo again and documented the process i used. Im still having problems and hoping you can help me resolve.
I uninstalled DDO completely, I checked windows update to be sure i was up to date and also checked that i have net.framework installed UAC is turned off:

I then used your ddo wrapper to reinstall ddo:

    The wrapper was installed successfully:

While the launcher was updating it tried to restart and left me with the following message:

I tried to start the launcher manually with the turbine invoker which didn’t work and when trying to launch with the turbinelauncher.exe i was left with the following message:

I have looked in set default programmes but im not sure which programme i should associate it with or if there is even a correct programme there to do so....

    Plz help

That is not DDO-Wrapper, those files are the original files provided by Turbine from when the Shadowfell expansion was released. DDO-Wrapper has 5 files for the installation and it looks completely different. Try using that then let me know. The download links for DDO-Wrapper the download links in the first post.

    This is Turbines fault!

I just tried downloading this game and it gave me the error 201 bullcrap. Maybe if Turbine gave a ****, we wouldn't be going through this error nonsense!

First of all, the download page, it doesn't even tell me what or which one I need to download. If I remember correctly, there were 2 options before to download, 1 was install then play and the other was play as you install. The play as you install worked last time I tried it and the install first then play didn't work so why did Turbine change the download page so now we can't see which one we're downloading?

    Turbine, FIX YOUR ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What a joke!
