Wait, so that's your answer? It's windows 10's fault? o.O

    How ridiculous!

This is turbine's fault! They need to get their **** together!

They took away the "play instantly" download client from us that worked perfectly, probably because of "financial reasons" and now we're stuck with not being able to download this game without some work on our part?

I have about 15 games on my computer and they all work fine and downloaded and installed with NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER!!!!! I didn't have to do a **** thing....even Diablo 2 from Blizzard downloaded and works perfect on windows 10!

This is NOT a windows 10 or a "it's our problem" issue here, this is a TURBINE ISSUE!

Bring back the "PLAY INSTANTLY" download client that they took away and no doubt, these "errors" that turbine is blaming on windows 10 or "us" will magically disappear.

This all has to do with money, of course. Turbine told me yesterday on the phone that people were having issues with the "play instantly" download client....I call horse manure on them. They are lying.

I agree with most of this, the final solution is wrong.

The play as you load thing works, while loading only, those with the error can't get the game to work after rebooting their computer after a full load from it. Comfirmed for 3 people I know so far.

The link is gone, but if you still have it, it still works, so we tried it.

The problem is also NOT a windows 10 problem, as my friend had the same problem on windows 7, or 10. Or ubuntu.

The problem is the game trying to run 15 different applications at once, that aren't able to sync properly, and cause error because of that, instead of running 1 larger application. Also the use of very old and dead code, is rather terrible. But the game is old, and they are waiting for it to die off. It's to the point where, if it starts costing them more to keep it running than what it gives them, they'll just kill it, whitout any second thought.

What we need is someone who's able to track down the actual exact line that messes up everything, and come up with a fix for it, probably a bypass or something, that allows EVERYONE to play the game.

Default DDO Client breaks on Windows 10

I had to perform a Windows 10 'refresh' because my start menu would not appear.
Refresh basically re-installs windows 10 but retains user settings.
Windows 10 is now working fine.

After re-installing DDO, it's a no go. After entering my username password, the client shuts down.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed. I'm desperately trying to find a solution/fix.

Default Windows 10 Client Not Launching Resolved...

    Update:

I installed the steam client to it's original location (prior to my windows 10 'refresh') in order to get my steam library up and running.

When I launched a game (it was Path of Exile), I saw the steam launcher installing Direct X and the Visual C++ runtime libraries - I have no idea what versions.
Path of Exile ran fine. Now when I run the DDO client, it works. All good.

One of these 2 items (Direct X - probably an older version than the one that comes with Win 10 and/or VC++ runtime) is required.

If you were unlucky enough to have a fairly new graphics card then when you went to windows 10 it put in directx12. directx12 does not work with d&d. There are only about 1/2 dozen or so games that are. You could go back to your previous version and then make sure all of 12 is out and then get from dirextx 9-11. As far as I know there is no work around d&d just has not upgraded to reconizing direct 12 yet. I must make my decision will they upgrad soon or do I go back to windows 7. If you have directx 12 you must decide on your own.

    Default directx12

after 4 crazy days this is whats up if you have a fairly new graphics card that can handle directx 12 then windows 10 loads it into your system. Out of the 100's of games there are only about 1/2 dz or so that are listed as working on directx12. Therefore your stuck with two choices.. Wait for turbine to implement 12 or go back to your old os and hope all of 12 comes out.

Any additional information could help find the root of the problem.
From researching this problem, this is my conclusion: ( hopefully someone can prove me wrong ... )

If you have a graphics card CAPABLE of DirectX 12 when you upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will install DirectX 12 and REMOVE DirectX11. Those people will have this problem and not be able to run the game.

If your graphics card is NOT CAPABLE of DirectX 12, the upgrade does NOT install DirectX 12, and does NOT REMOVE DirectX 11. These people will have no problem running the game. ( If this is the case, I'd be leery of upgrading a graphic card using 11 up to 12 )

Reverting back to a previous version of Windows will not guarantee that DirectX 12 will be removed and replaced with DirectX 11 unless you do a CLEAN install.

If you try to run DirectX User-Runtime, Windows 10 will tell you it's incompatible and won't run it. Same with DirectX 9.0C redistributable. ( In anther thread someone claims that people have done it - I'd like to know how ... )

Sadly, it appears that Microsoft dropped the ball on this upgrade as far as DirectX is concerned by not considering a method to retain DirectX 11.

Sadly, Turbine dropped the ball by not testing and finding a solution before this happened.

So near Christmas and maybe a lot of new computers and new gpu's ... If this isn't addressed quickly DDO will lose a lot of players simply because they just can't play the game.

Turns out that my last post was only partially correct.

A USB driver that I thought was updated for DirectX 12 was not ( nor was it available ). Replacing the device with one that was allowed the game to run with DirectX 11.

I had this very same problem and was ready to give up. My launcher would run ok until I chose game world but then my mouse pointer would indicate loading for like 2 seconds and then nothing happens. In other not so well documented thread I found someone suggesting installing DirectX 9.0c and that did work for me. I couldn't find an install that works for windows 10 from Microsoft's site so I used http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html. (If you do find something that works from Microsoft's official site please use it instead and maybe link it here. While the site does indeed give you the download you have to really pay attention to not click on ads or other junk.)

You will have to first download it, then have it unpack into a folder of your choosing and then run dxsetup from that folder.

I originally upgraded from Windows 7 but after install I had problem that resource manager wouldn't start at all so I had to fix it with return to default settings which practically does clean install. Someone also mentioned .NET framework 3.51 but enabling that didn't help me. (You can do that from the place where you add/remove programs if you have installation media that has 3.5.)

Just read the reply above me. Maybe installing DirectX 11 from a source that works is better but atleast this gets the game running.

Does it work with DirectX version 11.2, cause this is the version I use. It always closes out now after Update 29 at turbinelauncher.exe patch checking.

This is flat out wrong to an extent.

    DirectX 11 is removed during the upgrade process from W7/8 to Windows 10. My system has 2x nVidia GTX970 in SLI (which are DirectX 12 compatible), to get DDO working all I had to do was install the DirectX 9c (2010). However, do not use the web installer because that will automatically detect a newer version of DirectX and prevent the install, you need the full offline installer which is about 96MB in size and can be gotten from the following link;

I had this problem with running DDO via Steam on Windows 10 but then tried downloading DDO via the official client site. When I started the game for the first time I was very careful and noticed that I had some pop-ups for my Commodo and standard Windows firewalls. (I have disabled Windows firewall but for some reason it occasionally asks about network connections for some odd reason.) I made sure to grant access for each of these pop-ups and DDO seemed to work.

So if anyone else is having the same issue they might trying the other download options and checking very carefully for firewall pop-ups when the game is first run.

    EDIT:

Ugghhh - tried to run DDO a second time and it crashed again to black screen forcing a hard reboot......

That is what fixed it for me, too. Commenting for anyone else who is like me that upgraded today and discovered DDO suddenly not launching.

I am trying to follow along with this. I am NOT very tech savy, so please bear with me. My laptop came with Win10, but this thread has the most info.

I followed the link for DirectX, and it asks me what folder I want to download into. Where do I put it, and what do I do? I know how to make a new folder, but I don't know where it should be.

I had not had a problem playing DDO the first 3 times, but starting 2 days ago I was not able to get on past choosing my player and waiting to get into the world. I get an error message that has to do with a help ticket. It makes no sense, since I have not submitted a help ticket. I don't know what else to try.

Sound like during the upgrade, Windows corrupted some files needed. That is why generally a fresh install is better.

Create one on your desktop and the files will be extracted in to it, once that is done go in to the folder and run the setup.exe file which will install it.

    Hi Stoner,

I tried that, but got this error message:

    http://prnt.sc/by36ac

I checked my DX and, yes, it's 12. I haven't been able to play the game since upgrading to windows 10, more than 6 months ago.

Would need to see the contents of the log file really, you could try running it as Adminstrator (right click on the setup file and select "Run as Admin").
