Saw my Mom today. I had an hour of training with one of the Physical Therapists on how to care for my mother should she have to come home to what is called homecare rather than a skilled Nursing Facility or other such. Conclusion from the therapist was I was abysmal (mostly because I'm smaller than my mother and not strong enough to lift her easily) and would need more training. So I have to schedule another few hours, for more training. No problem. But, honestly, did they expect I would pick up the skills of a nurse and a physical therapist in an hour? With zero prior experience or education in those fields? How? Why did they initially tell me to schedule only a single hour? The illogic and absurdity of the situation astounds me.

Mom had another minor stroke in the rehab hospital so they just sent her back to the regular hospital. *sigh* I was just getting hopeful that she was improving.

Most of the night was only -7 to -9. Found a low spot outside the city where it finally dropped to -15, and was -12 when I got home.

Haven't even been able to Zoom call and see my mom since Monday. Called hospital as soon as my phone recharged. No change.

Monday was son's birthday, he got snow for his birthday. Snow in Texas! Snow in Houston area! Then the power went out across most of Texas. We've been huddled as a family under multiple layers of clothes and a pile of robes and blankets. Kids built a pillow/blanket fort in the living room and kept it lit with leftover unused Halloween glowsticks. We played pen & paper D&D most of the time by sun and later candlelight. There are a few lost dice in the dining room waiting for an unwary victim like caltrops. We would have been mostly warm except Dad with his dementia kept going outside to see what was going on and we'd get a cold rush of wind through the house. He also kept getting up in the middle of the night turning the water off and was getting irate that the electricity wasn't coming on or the heat and it didn't matter how many times we explained it. On the upside, I had made one cake for son's birthday - Triple Chocolate Lover's Dream and one for hubby for Valentines day - Neiman Marcus cake, so everyone was happily eating that for breakfast and snacks. Even Dad. Power came back on late yesterday evening so we all got hot showers and a warm dinner.

Watching that snow in Texas on the news. Took me back to basic training and how we actually got a non-training day for a little bit of snow in San Antonio.

Didn't think about the power outages, but glad that's done - tho am a little jealous of all that free D&D time.

She hasn't logged into that character yet but we played together yesterday afternoon, mostly hide & Seek and a little questing in Red Fens. She did log the character I put some snowballs on and was devastated we couldn't have a snowball fight in the KotB public zone. I thought about taking her to a PvP pit but I've had jerks show up in the past in there so I've avoided them for almost a decade. Is it possible to set up private instances in them? Well anyways, I posted a thread on the PC asking if we could have some cosmetic snowballs like the pumpkin/skull grenades that just put a flurry of snow on the targeted character.

I think you can still "Challenge Party" by selecting the character and clicking the gears on the focus orb.
Make sure that "Accept Challenge Requests" is selected in UI Settings tab of Options panel.

Thanks. I'll try that when I get the opportunity. I really do hope they take my suggestion and make a Snowball Grenade, like the pumpkin/skulls from Night Revels. Even if all it does is briefly dust people with snow it would be a fun, and appropriate item for winter festivities.

As to my Mom, she is doing somewhat better. She is making some small but complete sentences, using new words every time I Zoom chat with her. She doesn't seem to be getting physically stronger which bothers me but she is getting better control over her right side, including grasping with that hand. For now the docs are planning to move her to a Skilled Nursing facility with rehab. I did many hours of research trying to select the safest, best places for her. But she wasn't able to get a place in my top 5 choices... she did get approval from the 7th. I'm cautiously hoping for the best. I don't like hospitals and nursing homes as a general rule, there are too many bad ones. I can't even get her in a place closer to me because of the whole in-network insurance nonsense.

i mean not really. they cook plenty of their fish, just some sushi they don't.

but yeah, some fish can be toxic if prepared badly, but that's a delicacy.

Fried rice is a good place to start. You can trust fried rice (usually). Andrew Zimmern told me all about that *other* stuff.


I am, of course, kidding. There's a lot of good food there. Just most of it isn't my thing. I stick to the fried rice always.

Messing up learning to cook = natural.

After all these years, my major failing is still haven't got the knack for timing everything in a multi-dish meal to be done at the same time.
