Question (type thing) about crafting for LOTRO people that have more experience than I.

My main character is my hobbit hunter who is an explorer. No plans on changing her since tailoring is such a pain.

My alt is a dwarf minstrel that I keep waffling between scholar to make pots and oils or woodworker so I could craft instruments and possibly a legendary bow for the hobbit some day.

I do have my elf hunter who is currently a woodworker but since I have no plans on playing her I know I won't be able to get recipes after a certain point. Or at least recipes that don't drop from mobs because of rep requirement.

Would it be better to have an alt I have no plans on playing to be the scholar then? I do use oils fairly often on my hobbit. I don't really know if it's even worth trying to level crafting on a character I have no plans on playing either because of the recipe gating thing. I also have my RK who is a tinker so I don't know if it's worth continuing crafting on him either (jeweler and cook).

Are the recipes you get from the rep merchants better than the mob drops? Or can you successfully still craft good enough stuff with out having the rep merchant recipes?

Just trying to figure out how best to spend time so I don't continue to possibly waste it. The game has too many time sinks as is.

Nice choice to make your Hobbit Hunter an Explorer. Such mobility will make gathering materials much easier. If you are going to rely solely on mob drops for Scholar mats, then it does not really matter which character you set as Historian; however, it is faster to harvest Scholar mats from nodes, so a leveled character would be more efficient.

My personal preference is to have a main Hunter as Explorer and a secondary Hunter as Historian. This way I have very mobile characters for materials collection. The Historian can level up to 40+ via Farming (crops can be a good source of revenue at the top tier, but Farming actually more than pays for itself if you just vendor the finished product).

As for recipes, I think the best ones are guilded, but I could be wrong. I have all crafts, but most are not well leveled just yet.

edit: I watch trash cans at w*** near the Lottery scanner for loser scratch-offs. These are enter-able on the lottery page to accumulate points to buy stuff from their rewards shop. Plus, some also enter you into drawings for extra prizes, like a $1 Million drawing for each $30 Golden Ticket entered. (I ain't paying no $30 for scratch-off ticket even if it scratches itself off!) ...but I have many entries into the drawing so far.

So anyhow, from my gathered spoils last night, I scored 2 $5 winning tickets that the purchaser had tossed without scratching the little mini-game on the BACK of the tickets. Two tickets that were still hooked together, so was from the same purchase.

So karmic thanks go out to some drunk scratch-off gambler.

My main Hunter is also a collecter, erm, I mean Explorer. My Historian sits in the craft hall and has done pretty well staying current from what mats I mail home from my hunter, and occasional AH finds when they're priced fairly.

I do occasionally regret not having a Historian that can be fielded when I enter zones that are littered with Scholar nodes, but it hasn't been often enough to do anything about it.

Guild recipes are pretty good. I can't think of many recipes from reputation vendors that are amazing enough to go rep farming/adventuring just for that. (Maybe top-tier Essence recipes? Not sure)

Farming will not pay so well strictly with cooking ingredients. Un-worked Crops sometimes sell well from the crit-hunting Farmers. And the newer dyes are selling VERY well right now on Brandy.

Good to know on the farming for xp. lol Maybe I'll skip some levels on my dwarf then by farming. These low levels just kill me with boredom.

Thank you both. This helps me make the decision on what to do and how to spend time/materials. I think I'll just leave the elf as a woodworker and the dwarf as historian. I do like the idea of being able to gather the scholar mats by node rather than just relying on mob drop. Plus I did buy a couple of extra milestone skills for the dwarf and the timer reducers (love sales).

Knowing about the guild recipes also helps since I haven't been working on that rep much as of late. This tells me I need to go do some gathering on my hobbit which is fine since I love riding my pony.

Also, if anyone finds themselves on Landroval and you are a subscriber feel free to stop by 2 Wendingway, Beechcrest neighborhood, in the Shire for a premium ingredient pack box. You'll get 6 per use, per day, per character.

I also have the VIP box set up on Brandy. Erm, don't recall exact address, but is in Yoketon, Shire. Tyrric's personal house is 1 Wending Way, right inside the gate (With an interactive Keg). The kin house is further down the street on Myrtle Court. VIP box, several craft stations, Supplier ... and another Keg inside.

He could be an ingredient catcher too.

Looks like this week's LOTRO sales are inventory, bank, and wardrobe slots. Going to be another week of draining my TP stash. >_>

Hm. Thought we just had those 2-3 weeks ago. Maybe they'll all discount correctly this time?

I grabbed the Journeyman Riding trait box this past week. (Gives every character from now on Riding skill, and the +78% riding speed.) Even on sale was pricey, but I was overdue to buy something extravagant.

(At +78%, one can really rock those collectible nodes!)

I haven't seen it on sale since I came back the first week of August. Or at least I don't' recall it.

I have thought about picking up that trait box but I am sure once my dwarf gets his war pony I won't be riding anything but on both he and the hobbit. So not sure it's worth it for basically one character.

May pick up one more milestone skill for the dwarf before those sales expire...

The three cooldown reducing skills are very nice for a character that does not have travelling built in. Five minutes goes by almost without notice. Keep in mind that all milestones have the same timer, so multiples just give you variety. The return skills are each on a separate timer, and Bree can be had by any non-Man with Bree rep and rep items.

Yeah, I learned that about the milestone skills back when I bought several for my RK. I was really disappointed at the time. I don't think they had it so you could get down to five minute cd yet either. My dwarf has a total of four. That may be one too many but we'll see. The 5 minute timer does seem to go by nicely which I like.
