Definitely rewired the lighting in my office area.
    Raked up the front yard.

On a serious note, has anyone even asked 'whether' Apple can open up that iPhone? Is it possible to create a system that is unbreakable without the password? I know we have some very smart and wise people in here.
I am of two minds on whether they should, but I believe they also have the right to due process.

On the strictest of senses, can the information requested be gathered? In my opinion the answer is yes. Can such be done without destroying the phone in the process? I don't know. If the USG didn't make the mistakes it did, the phone could probably still be used, but at current time it would probably not be able to be done without destroying the phone itself.

Can you create a system that is unbreakable without the password? Under current consumer grade COTS stuff? Generally no. Can you build in protections to protect against unlimited attempts? Yes, and I think that is what Apple did do and why it is of issue now.

They have people directly responsible for the issue at hand. Trying to find more of that web however is being blocked. At which point is "due process" a witch hunt, revenge, or justified? (I have no answer on that, it is just a question to consider.) As a U.S. citizen I have a reasonable right to privacy. Apple, while a US company, markets on an international level. Once a backdoor is known or just know of, every government, not just US, can access your phone given time. Any hacker be it dataminer, paparazzi (or do you not remember the fact that newspaper reporters were hacking into phones giving law enforcement false hope that a dead person that was missing was still alive?), black mailer, ananomious, etc. can access your phone. What level of reasonable privacy do you then have?

Yet at the same time we expect the government to do its fullest to protect us from dangers, including those we have no clue about. At which point do they go to far, at which point do we agree that loss of liberty is worth the perception of being safe. There are many views and values on this. There is no singular answer on it.

Do I have answers? No. But you'll see the same arguments being made about this, as arguments about power creep on the forums here. In truth I find that in general humans using technology in first world countries are very immature with the use of technology. We didn't take decades to get used to advances and learn how to wisely use them across the board because the advances are still happening. If we were more mature about them, I don't think we'd be stuck in this troubled spot in total that we are in today. I say this extremely general in regards to technology, environment, and poverty on a world level, not a singular government/location.

Yep. I've got most of my chars settled in now. Mostly centered on BW and Landro, with pairs of lowbies on each of the other active US servers, and 1 EU server.

I still have characters on all worlds rolling presents. I just need to remember to drop the shiny stuff into the shared bank.

I was 30 minutes late for ticket sales opening. Therefore, I was only able to snag 3RD row seats, on the aisle. Czar VIP tix, including a pre-show party with Al, autographed tour flag, swag, etc.

    *sigh*

    ...on Gen Con weekend...

    ...and *only* about $600...

    ...

I decided a screenie of what I *could* have snagged was cheaper.

It *is* a nice screenshot of tickets I can't afford for a concert on a weekend I'll be out of town, isn't it?

Bummer! I saw him last year at Casino Rama on his Mandatory tour. Not quite as good as your seats (only 5th row center and no party). But the show was awesome.

As I understand it, and I have been reading about this particular case, Apple might be able to do it on that phone because it is an older model but most people who understand the architecture (and are talking don't believe it is possible on newer iPhones).

It might be possible on that older phone because the firmware doesn't support encrypting the device (OS and user data) natively (like the newer ones do). This means they can update the firmware without the user entering the passcode (although it needs to be done locally, not through a normal update). The firmware modification the court is ordering is to bypass the delays and auto-wipe built into the firmware when entering the unlock code. This way the police can spend a few days entering 4 digit codes until they get it right.

The truth is, the Apple engineers probably don't know for sure if they can do what the courts want them to do.

The newer phones encrypt both the OS and the user's data. So, you can't update the phone until you unlock it to get the update program in the OS to run. On the newer phones you would have to get directly at the flash chips and start cracking the encryption (AES256 I believe).

It would be nice to see Weird Al show live.
But then when I see any concert on Youtube I can adjust the volume. I don't like loud noises.

I really would like to share with you some nice songs with witty lyrics, but it is all in Finnish. So sad.

On a more positive note I just started to give a physics course in a new manner, where students take partial exams when and where and how they like, and after that tell me what grade they deserve.
There is actually much more method to this, but I really do get rid of making and marking exams for this course.

That is a different form of a take home test... I'm guessing you left out some primary principles for us to understand just how it works though.

I just remember grading finals in college. After I gathered their tests I headed off to a lunch buffet. All you can eat and drink while grading tests. I think one of the students ended up with some sauce on theirs because I oopsed.
