Ok, one more ... doublestrike, etc. and special attacks

I'm still leveling through heroics on the now-few toons I play, but I've got my eye on a few things for epic builds heading here in the future.

If you have a special attack (let's say Coup de Grace or Assassinate, etc.) and you've got either TWF or hefty-ish double-strike (or both) and you mash the "swing special attack" button, does that generate multiple attempts at said attack?

I believe it used to be the case, as I recall assassinating and getting more than the single (and sometimes triple) but I'm old and my memory may not be what it used to be.

Is this still valid?

Some yes, others no. For instance, Assassinate triggers doublestrikes and offhand attacks. Coup de Grace doesn't trigger either.

Thing is, there are some things that didn't exist then... And that's what I'm looking at.
