Default How is warlock different from wizard or sorcerer in DDO

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion on warlock yet. It's pretty pathetic actually https://www.ddo.com/forums/forumdisp...rlock-Feedback

Only 4 threads on the feedback forum.

Did Turbine make a boo boo and introduce a class no one's really interested in? Looked at warlock spell list and seems like carbon copy of wizard and sorcerer. Why should I play this class? Just for completionist?

I watched a youtube video on it. It seems to me like the best thing coming from warlock is not feeling obligated to take the completionist feat at level 3 until I see some deep discounts on the class.

One difference is that a warlock's spell list is mainly buff spells with the occasional crowd control, and even more occasional damage spell. The biggest difference though is the Eldrich Bolt ability, although DDO is calling it an eldrich blast. This is a toggle ability that changes your basic weapon attack into launching magic blasts that do force damage plus acid/fire/sonic damage. The second damage type depends on your chosen pact, selected as a class feat during character creation. Note that both the basic blast's damage and the pact damage increase as your warlock levels. Also note that it costs ZERO spell points to use this attack.

Depending on which pact you selected you'll get specific crowd control spells added to your spell list while leveling via class feats. You'll also get a boost to will/reflex/fort save. Which one again depends on your pact. While warlocks are spell casters, you may find yourself not actually using your spells very often. They also start out able to wear light armor, with an enhancement in one tree enabling the use of medium armor without arcane spell failure (as well as granting proficiency in medium armor). One tree also gives access to a couple healing spells as SLA. The first is Cure Moderate Wounds, while the second one is an player based aoe heal that also damages undead.

Sort-of like how is one character that hits things with a weapon different from another character who hits things with a weapon?

Yeah, I'm surprised to see this topic. Druids didn't get a thread asking "how are druids different from cleric or favored soul" after all. Or "How is monk different then fighter or barbarian".

I agree with the OP - apart from the fact there are several very long threads about Warlock - see 'Warlocks!' for the best example.

The spell list's top spells are the same as Wizard, Sorcerer and Bard.

Druid had shapechange, earthquake and storm of vengeance, all of which lent a different feel.

FvS was a bit samey, but we only had Cleric, so one more caster divine wasn't too bitter a pill.

The Monk comparison is a good illustration of how novel a new class can be.

Warlock has Eldritch Blast for differentiation - which is something - but I'm still hopeful more can be done with the casting aspects (like infinite casting and a different spell list - and maybe some sort of shapeshift even if it's just 'graphics of a demon and perma-tensor's when in form').

The biggest and most important difference is one is named Warlock, the others are Wizard and Sorcerer. Other then that, there is really no difference. Oh but players wanted it, so we got it, and update count padded+1.

Yea, sort of like how redundant it is to have so many classes that physically strike another being with a weapon. I mean can't they come up with anything new? Physical damage has been done to death already!

Bad news then.... Since DDO is at least loosely based on 3.5, or at least was initially, that's not likely to happen. Why? Because the eldrich blast ability is the central feature of warlocks in 3.5 edition. And Invocations in 3.5, their spell list, tend to duplicate the effects of arcane spells. So having their DDO spell list comprise of the equivilent spells only makes sense. But again, most of the spell list is buff spells and crowd control. Warlocks will rely more on their gained spell like abilities, weapons and/or eldrich blast to actually defeat foes. Good news is that even if a warlock runs out of spell points, they still can use their eldrich blast.

So what your saying is.... They made a support role for a game that's turned into a solo mode.

No, they made a 'support role' for a character who is an effective attacker already. Since much of the crowd control spells are enchantments or conjuration, but their eldrich blast has a evocation based save to resist... My builds so far on test server are focusing more on buff spells, utility spells, and blasting foes. And that's working well so far. Maybe not for epic elite, but then I may never run those on live servers.

Warlocks have very limited spell use.. ontop of low SP. But they have unlimited DPS source and better DC than wizard/sorcerers.

Warlocks are unique since they can DPS 24/7 and maintain straight DPS, unlike other casters that start very good then get weaker and weaker.

Warlocks are very good in my opinion.

It's just a theory, but I'm thinking a tainted scholar warlock will be nasty with a certain fey based epic destiny. chain blast+confuse chance+shiradi toggles sound fun.

There's actually quite a bit of discussion. Did you only look on the feedback threads for the current implementation?

Try the threads discussing the more general aspects. I think the search function is working reasonably well at the moment.

If I have to search for it, then there's not enough discussion on something that's supposed to be the latest and greatest feature of DDO.

Yes, you have to search oh so hard. Did you bother looking in the class forums? There's a rather active section dedicated to warlocks.

So you're saying the feedback on warlocks is splintered into several different forums. How confusing. O well, I'd rather have a topic on General DDO Discussion.

DDO is not very popular like WoW, there are not enough information about things. Even most DDO videos are under 100 - 800 views. However, once you start digging, everything will come up. Even small information means a lot.

Anyways, many people don't play lamannias so, you get more info once turbine release warlock class next month. You have to be either, patient or start doing something. Maybe play warlock on lamannia or actually visit warlock class forum. I understand how confusing it is.. but it's up to players.
