One thing I did like about their server architecture was you could access chat channels on the other games, so you could keep an eye on events while in a different game, or using a chat client whilst not gaming. Probably not so relevant to DDO outside seasonal occasions though.
DDOs history with people in charge is pretty much the same. Around here we just wait for the person in charge to get the call to LOTRO that seems to come regularly. DDO is like MLB minor leagues, the call up can come any day.

I dunno, kinda torn on this. Again, this sounds great in practice... but that wasn't my experience while playing Neverwinter. Though maybe it's the UI or the way the rest of the chatting system was set up in that game that made it unwieldy.

For the record, I actually really liked that game for a while until it devolved into pure pay-2-win shortly after release, so I'm not just blindly hating.

Either way, cybersquatting on a name just so you can have that name in the future if you ever decide to use it is a **** move. Inactive accounts, especially, shouldn't be able to sit on names just because they "got here first".

Complete separation of characters is an option you can still maintain without putting in any more work to do so, even when all characters receive all communications sent to @account.
    2 MAJOR points:

    1. Having account name means easier account breaking. 1 less variable to think of when trying to get into the account.

    2. One does not need a list of all your character names to figure out what are your characters. Even in DDO, that account names are never displayed, many people find out who is who at some point.
2.1. I recently tried to join a Shroud run on my main and found out I was ignored by the leader. I did not remember the name and had no idea how this happened. Could well be some old accident or misunderstanding that led to this. I switched characters, joined and completed an uneventful Shroud. No reason my ignored character could not join and no reason to also ignore all my other characters.
2.2. My guild leader has many toons and he roleplayed each one of them. I had a very hard time figuring whether a guildie I was playing with was his. And it was fun trying to decipher small details to reach the truth. Couldn't be done with account name displayed.
2.3. I have made it to the list of friends of a fairly active player. Recently, each time I was on I would receive a tell with something to join and I had to decline each time for reasons. When I want to do something I join an LFM or put one of my own. I don't like to be dragged into parties. But also, I didn't want to seem like I was avoiding that player because then I could instead make it to the enemies list. So I logged into other characters to avoid that and when joining his groups with another character I would not mention who I was. Could not do that with account name being displayed.
2.4. A spammer can also create new accounts. Blocking a whole account sure makes it harder to spam you, but not impossible to keep doing it. Only way is again to block the spammer each time they appear. Be it by blocking a character or an account.

That's why they use account handles. Just like here on the DDO boards where we use forum handles. My @ name in this database would be @chai, not @log on name.

One line item per account is still better than one line item per name. Most of the reasons why people would not want this have been thought of and the feature was implemented in ways where people could still do the positive things they still want to do which were possible under the old DB method. .

2.4 Some more recent games make you level to a specific level at least once before allowing tells to make the time consumption needed to make another account for abuse reasons prohibitive. DDO even does this for access to general chat.

2.1 perhaps there was a reason and it was long forgotten. users can be removed from ignore just like they can be added to it. You also get to see your ignore list, so the leader would have know if you were ignored or not.

2.2, 2.3, is solved by having characters anon.

    1. not relevant. nobody c ares about hacking someones ddo account and different player name/account name would not make any difference. login name does not have to = account name.

2.1 so you exploited a weakness in the system to bypass someones /ignore of you by logging into a character he did not recognize and joined his party.. this is even more reason to ignore=account not just toon.
2.2 its not fun its just annoying. account name makes sense
2.3 you can just go anonymous.. or switch accounts.
2.4 this makes no sense whatsoever.. account blocking is more effective than player blocking. your example is the same whether you block account or player.

You are not getting my point I dont want to get tells/mail even if I can ignore them its annoying beyond belief I want a total discnnect from certain charaters to others I dont want global friending and such a system would be one of the few things that would get me not to play I hate such systems even more than hireliings or the forgotten realms since I can ignore those but your faveorite system is to intrusive for me we are never going to see eye to eye but I dont like it and I think our system currently is best except for people who cant think of names.

I clearly outlined the level of convenience and practicality which can be experienced using a new updated system, in more than a few ways, which has nothing to do with lack of player creativity in making their own name. I dont believe the current system is better for everyone but those folks who cant think of a unique name.

You can solve the issue regarding wanting total disconnect in several ways:

----by going anon on specific characters.

----By playing on different servers. Now I know someone will reply back that they want to share items between characters, to which I will reply that this is not a total disconnect.

----multiple accounts. Accounts in those games are free, with all content included. What better way to have total disconnect than being on a different account

I understand how people dont like specific companies or specific games for specific reasons, but even those companies and those games have some features that are more up to date than the game we play here, and can be cherry picked and implemented without causing all the horror stories people provide as reasons for not wanting it to happen. Most if not all of the reasons why people would not like the account based system have been thought of, and in many new games the account based system has been implemented in a way which allows people to do the things they could in older systems as well.

I dont want to go anon on characters I just dont wanted them to be asscoiated with my other characters. Multiple accounts are you going to pay for my VIP on all those accounts and different servers I already play on several but I have my fave . There is nothing you could pick that cryptic has that I would like to see here and yes I have played their games. Your system is horrible to me worse than even my chief other complaints of hirelings and forgotten realms.

I challlenge you to name one thing a cryptic game has that I would like and remember I have played them and didt like them I was trying to find a replacement for DDO for things I didnt like here. There has been only two other MMO's I liked DAOC and it got old quick and SWG before NGE and primarly Pre-CU. I like simple naming systems first name only its fast easy and in 9 years has had ZERO isssues for me.

None of you proposed solutions are even mildy viable to me.

I guess I'm indifferent to the issue of stripping character names from players who haven't played in awhile. I can see the pro and cons to each side and overall I don't think it would impact me either way. Although it could affect a number of old guild members who haven't logged in quite some time. Then again, if they were contacted prior to the name being removed from their characters then I don't see a major issue with it because they would have a chance to log in and re-establish the use for that character name. I would be more concerned about characters being deleted as opposed to just names.

I don't think ANYONE here is suggesting they delete toons.

I think almost EVERYONE here would be against that.

Nobody should lose thir name even if they havent played in a long time. People are looking for a solution to a problem that doesnt really exist. If the name you tried is taken just think up a new one problem sovled.

Sounds like alot of bias against cryptic making this a subjective discussion. Like I said before, most if not all the reasons people like the old systems they can do in the new systems. Not wanting to go anon =/= system is horrible and isnt going to work for the vast majority of folks. Even if their games are 95% bad and 5% good feature wise, I believe the 5% that is good can be cherry picked out and implemented in other games, as it is in most new games.

Their crafting system in Neverwinter. Just set up the crafters to make what you want and either go play the actual game, or log off. Their crafting system handedly defeats all others which require sitting at the keyboard spam clicking the same 3-4 keyboard buttons over and over again only gaining xp after each item is completed, and all have to be done so manually by the player from start to finish. SWG used something very similar to this type of crafting as well.

    Yeah, I know.

Been playing solid (except for one three month break) since Head Start. Been a VIP for almost the entire time too.

Do I NEED the name I'm talking about? No.

Do I deserve at least a chance getting and actually using the name more than the guy/gal who grabbed it before I got a chance to claim it and has NEVER used it in 9.5 years since the game came out? You bet I do.

This is a problem of FAIRNESS. I've supported DDO by both paying my VIP subscription and actually playing for a LONG time. The other person has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the game.
