You can take it as soon as its available, but it's not that necessary at low levels.

    Combat Archery requires dex21

Does Holy sword work on xbows?
    YES
    Thanks for looking!

    Default Other Build Options

Here's the Pros and Cons as I see them for a different 20th level splash

    1 Arti
Pros: extra feat(rapid relead), heavy repeater prof, better scroll heals, might want manyshot
Cons: no assassin trick, have to spend more points for Int to Damage(extremely tight AP, this matters)

    1 Fighter
Pros: use feat for a heavy repeater(not extra feat)(not really a pro either)
Cons: no assassin trick, have to spend more points for Int to Damage

    1 Monk
    Pros: Ask poppytop(Ladislaio)
Cons: no assassin trick, have to spend more points for Int to Damage

    1 Rogue
Pros: just enough feats. assassin trick, cheap int to damage(more points for ranged power in the harper tree)
    Cons: no heavy repeater prof.

    Can evaluate more if necesary.

This build looks very interesting. I have never played a pali before so I believe I will give this a try...it is almost like my ranger/rogue which almost does the same deal but with a light repeating crossbow

Just out of curiosity: Why LIGHT Repeater and not HEAVY?

6rogue is only granted light proficiency. U could take the feat if u choose. I love needle and light repeater work fine.

This reminded me of my machine gun nun build.
I went Pali/Arti though, most AP in Harper. Took Arti over rogue for endless fusillade.

    Default Half-Elf?

If the artificer dilettante really grants proficiency with all crossbows you could save yourself a feat swap. The tradeoffs are that you have to spend a little more AP in the racial tree for healing amp and the action boost and have a minimum +4 INT tome to make up for the human skill bonus.

    You get:
+1 INT/DEX (INT gives you 2 extra AP for one of your rogue trees, DEX gives you a 2% buff to-hit and increases the range of Point Blank shot and ranged sneak attacks)
    +2 diplomacy
    +2 UMD on scrolls
+1 AP in the Mechanic tree
    Immunity to sleep
    Half-Elf Social Graces (extra bluff)

    You lose:

3 to-hit and damage from tier 5 Sharpshooter (you lose two less damage from going with a heavy repeater)
1 melee, ranged, and universal spell power from Versatile Adept II

Rolled the helf version in one of my test lifes. It works well as u predict. Unfortunately my main is a completionist and I need that feat.

That is certainly an option worth exploring though for the noncompletionist types!! Thanks for adding this insight.

This is very interesting, I was thinking of coming back to DDO more actively and was looking at build possibilities based on the current state of the game.

One build I considered was a 15Pal/5Rog set up similar to the build here. Instead of using repeaters, it would use great crossbows, meaning that the 6th rogue level isn't needed so much. I'm not sure how much dps loss you'd take going from repeaters to great xbows; an analysis I looked at on the 'other' forums suggests that for a pure rogue mechanic, great xbow dps is more or less identical to heavy repeaters. I suspect that for the pal 14 version, repeaters are however slightly ahead because of lower SA dice and holy sword evening the playing field for crit range/multiplier extensions vs. the pure mechanic version (which picks up an additional +1 mult on great xbows vs. repeaters).

Another option which possibly increases flexibility at the cost of max xbow dps would be to spec as a stick fighter / great crossbow user. This would mean dropping the ap spend in assassin, and instead spec'ing into TA up to tier 2. The reason this might still be good is that holy sword makes up for not having the tier 5 staff specialisation, and you pick up things like faster stick speed and 25% doublestrike quite early, along with the 10% doublestrike from zeal.

For full-on cheese, you could even do it as a bladeforged for the reconstructs; you'd end up with 11ap in the racial tree (for communion of scribing III), 39ap spend in mechanic, 12ap in harper (know the angles III, int to hit/damage), 17ap in TA leaving 1 ap free.

I'm not sure if the feats would work out for both melee and crossbow capabilities though, and the dex requirements might be tricky given the bladeforged -2 dex penalty.

    Default Ammo Usage

So I am running one of these, excellent build by the way , and I am running out of ammo with a quickness. Even with 80% return enhancement using 1200 bolts in a short gaming session is a given. Are you relying on the House D durable ammo? I know I am missing something here....

They might be bugged still (or at least they were bugged for long, long time). If that does not work, try flame arrow wands/scrolls. 500 bolts, that do extra fire damage. You can get them in house P.
