Default Purge the Heretics and why I rarely run it!

Note the wording when speaking to Gnomon!
Note what he actually says to you and what you have to say in return to even get given the quest!

My problem with this quest is that you're not deceived by Gnomon into doing Evil but indeed for a great many characters {seriously how many people actually take Follower of the Silver Flame apart from Cleric/FvS Archers anyway?} have to tell a blatant lie to a supposed Cleric of that Deity just to be given the quest in the first place!

Knowing this I do not accept shares for this quest on characters that aren't Silver Flame followers either!

P.S. Yes I know my Hotbars are a mess!

totally think the actions you take dependent on alignment should influence gameplay subversively somewhere down the line

Of course, Gnomon's true identity makes a later encounter provides a bit of vengeance for the lost souls and redemption for the player character.

I've tried a third option on this quest, by stunning or paralyzing and bypassing everyone but the two required kills. With a lot of ninja work, I succeeded. I still wanted to find a brush suitable enough to clean the insides of my soul.

Sometimes I wish we'd have more story flavor such as this, although perhaps not as morally dark.

Wait, there's NPC dialogue in DDO? When did that happen? I thought there were only silly pop-up windows that I press ctrl-f1 to get through - do they have actually dialogue in them? wut?

    Hi,

At the risk of seeming an appalling racist, +1000.

If you read some of the Eberron novels you'll find a sense of just how most of the populace views the silver flame. They are generally interfering, self-righteous zealots whose belief system allows no room for anything except unquestioning faith. The population respond by trying to ignore them or by nodding and smiling and just agreeing with what they say until they go away. Not many see the Silver Flame as evil, its obvious they fight for good, it's just an unwavering type of lawful good. Maybe if you're a cleric of the Sovereign Host or some other deity you might be walking on thin ice to agree, but most others will simply nod and smile at the Silver Flame, do what they ask and take their money in return.

The entire Lords of Dust chain with Gnomon nicely shows what happens when one of the leaders of the clergy goes wrong and the rest just follow blindly, the theme is repeated in Shavarath in Wrath of Flame and probably elsewhere; it seems followers of the Silver Flame are programmed to nod and smile.

You might consider the fun roleplay opportunity for at least your chaotic characters, regardless of class to just choose to patronise Gnomon, nod and smile your "unquestioning service" and realise that while he might see your service as evidence of your devotion to the silver flame, it is really evidence of your devotion to your bank balance!

    Hehe

Well, they changed Tear to make my life easier, I'm sure they'll get around to that one as well. And Relic.

It does usually take me a few tries to get the quest, I always forget...

Just put on some guards, block and type, "Wait! I'm here to help you!" while the mobs beat themselves to death.

Whereas we are totally willing to believe all other questgivers when they tell us "Hey stranger, I know some bad guys who totally need to die. And while you're at it, it won't hurt if you kill all their employees/family members/whoever else lives in their lair too. They're evil, you hear me? EVIL! EEEVIILL!!! ...Also, did I mention that you get to keep whatever you find on top of the payment I offer for this murder contract - I mean, this noble quest?"

Its interesting to note that that stereotype is pretty much directly against what the setting creator views as the face of the Silver Flame. Some of the novelists might have gotten onto the church-bashing bandwagon, but as a rule, its followers are well-thought of within the world.
Several nationalities such as Droaam, Karrnath and Breland might not like the church due to directly fighting against Thrane, but they still know that a Silver Flame worshipper will try to help if you're in trouble, and will die to protect you against a supernatural threat.

You want the worst of all of them? We're sent in to destroy (not bargain with, not reason with - destroy) an intruder who broke into a most secret bank vault in order to get a part of the prophecy that will save the world.

For what good and noble cause did we do this vile deed? So that "House Kundarak will be grateful." Sent in to do murder by a banking guild interested only in plat/astral diamonds.

    Nope, here's the worst one.

Underneath House Phiarlan, totally keeping to themselves, is a nice quiet hobgoblin village. You choose to attack it for pay because another hobgoblin dared you to do so.

Oh, wait, that happens in another place, too.

We're adventurers, not lawmen. I like to play the good guy, but the game gives us anothe scenario. Best we can do to feel lawful is not to play certain quests.

I pretend to agree with Gnomon and then go in to inform the cultists to get the heck out of there. Yet, they attack me anyway! So I kill them all. Not for Gnomon, mind you, but because I am angry they did not let me speak first.
