The turbine folks didn't say that the motes of night would never be useful again. In fact, when asked directly during one of the lunchtime lifestreams, Cordovan wouldn't give a definitive answer about the motes but he was pretty clear that they might re-use some of the Mabar content in whatever replaces it.

Unlike the anniversary trading cards (that we were promised would come back occasionally but now won't); the Mabar issue was excessive lag, not item duping bugs.
