Default New 'city' area: The Monastery, Shaolin-Style

Just a thought. This will not be created due to lack of dev resources so let this be just a dreamy thought.

I would love a 'city' section/public area that was monk-oriented. Maybe some kind of large monastery, shaolin-style, with dojos and ninja training rooms. It would of course have a monk trainer. . .

I imagine it with sculptures throughout from Jade strike--bright green frozen aberrations placed aesthetically.

ok, will never happen, happy thought over.

Here are some inspirational images lifted from the net:

    And, of course:

Is Eberron based in any form of oriental styles? I have no idea. If it has some it could fit. I know some quests (Dreams of Insanity example) have oriental looks. If it doesn't though then I would say leave the Orient out and add BUCK ROGERS BABY!!!

Thanks for your response Sehenry03! Yeah, monks and the ninja are, well, rather oriental. But hey, we have steampunk warforges!

And yes, add Buck Rogers! I will sign that thread!

I will say this. I really like the short little slayer area before Dreams of Insanity. I think it is neat and a nice aesthetic to get you to the actual dungeon.

In all seriousness, if we could have a small dojo that's opened by some wandering Kalashtar NPC (without getting any Psionics in the game as player characters) I'd be good.

The place (with favor) would give Monks a few special things, a feat or a special public item.

    Question

Aren't the Saomi Gardens done like this?

I know Reaver's Refuge isn't a huge hit, but it seems to me content like this exists. I think there are other portions of the game (ala Dreams of Insanity) that also have that "oriental adventure" feel to them - much of Restless Isles, for example.

Yep. The models are all there. It's just a matter of opening up a dojo and for contributions for rice and Green Steel to be offered by others for us to continue our path towards enlightened kicking of @$$.

hi Spencerian, I totally forgot about the Soami Gardens. Perhaps that is the way to approach this. Once one completes that quest, it is presumed that the monastery has been 'cleansed' and then opens it up as a city area. Until that quest is completed by a player, he or she cannot access it.

This would not require developer resources since it already exists. Well, some, anyway, to add this conversion.

Then there can be some minor stuff of interest to ninjas, monks, etc.

Not a bad idea. I see it as a monastic "Portable Hole" special vendor area as the arcanes have.

Once the Monastery of the Scorpion quest is complete, the area becomes a hidden public instance where any character with Monk levels and that flag can find similar resources for Monks. (Non-Monks simply cannot enter and will re-enter the possessed gardens.)

Weapons, trainers, a training dummy, special sturdy shuriken, special robes and outfits, a bank, access to a special cosmetic armors (Exclusive, BtCoA) or even craftable low level returning shuriken (where you can only find them in-game, Bound to Account or Character on Acquire so there's not a glut on the AH). It wouldn't have to change anything about the garden except no monsters and the dojo's entrance now allows entry to get to these resources.

Such an instance might also encourage more players to do these quests. You could apply these special instances to many classes.

awesome idea! I can see a few cosmetic armors, like a proper ninja outfit or shaolin robes. I would create some kind of mario-skills course like several high pillars one must jump across (including two or three only accessible with abundant step) until one reaches the end. There, one can find the special vendor.

I lived that song a a kid. Carl Douglas.

I imagine it hummed as a mantra in my imaginary dojo.

You might not be far from the truth. "Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting" debuted in 1974. The Monk class, debuted in the Blackmoor supplement in 1975, was inspired by the Destroyer book series (which had a single movie adaptation: Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins).

I like that. Separates the better-trained Monks from those whose kung-fu is insufficient.
And that vendor's items are BtConAcquire. No trading, Grasshopper.

Warforged have absolutely nothing to do with steampunk read up on Eberron lore please. and while there is an area on FR for idea there isn't on Eberron the new city we need is Sharn not one city area based on part of one class that most pnp games don't even use for that class.

Don't think so it was more the all Kung fu movies and the series Kung Fu that did that since dnd is about the same age as the song.

Warforged are related to the Quori (the Dreaming Dark) and of course is Eberron lore. I wouldn't pick too many nits about our playful but inaccurate banter about Warforged since Eberron itself is a magitek world where the Steampunk genre does overlap, although not truly related.

Your logic's specious. Why, then, does the Portable Hole exist, if not for class-specific support?

I don't have a problem about Sharn, but that's a new-content issue, not a class-support one. Many of the classes have a class-specific area they can use, even if tiny and not an instance. The Rogues have the trapsmith crafting station. Arcanes, the Hole. Trainers are class-specific, of course. The Free Agent vendors give class-specific items for Rogues and Artificers, which also have a class-only scroll vendor. Vendors as a whole do this for classes.

The closest locked vendor that the Monk has is in House Deneith, for sturdy (75% returning, non-DR busting, and therefore virtually useless) shuriken. But this isn't class-only content, which is what we're addressing.

This suggestion is simply adding something that Monks do not have; a class-specific resource outside of the trainer, where items that the class needs (DR bypassing, critical outfits and handwraps) can be found, with sufficient training/favor, just as Wizard isn't getting to the Hole w/o learning Teleport.
