    Default Gamma World Online

Gamma World Online (GWO) - no, it doesn't exist yet, and Wizards of the Coast has no plans that I know of to develop it. But - why don't they? Given the enormous popularity in post-apocalyptic games/movies/series, you'd think that GWO would be developed by now. We saw what the Fallout series did, but that was one-player, and Gamma World as a concept pre-dates Fallout (i.e. no argument from Bethesda on infringement).

What say you? Do you want to see this WOC owned game line become an online MMORPG?

My opinion - Gamma World as a concept would actually work better as a video game/MMORPG than the original paper/box game it was developed as.

In case you have never heard of Gamma World - do a search online and view the history, but - it was a TSR published game under Gary Gygax's tenure in the company, but Gygax only wrote one portion of a product and was not the primary author of this line. James Ward is the primary author and developer of the game, with a predecessor game called Metamorphosis Alpha being his first game that heavily influenced Gamma World (WOC does not own Met. Alpha though, as I understand).

I would love to see this happen!

I played this game as a kid and was very fun! The big issue would be getting combat to work between mutations and weapons.

So many memories of GW. I only played it for about 2 years (89-90), but I do have fond recollections of those with whom I played. My first character was a semi-Borg type because ST:TNG had just introduced them and GW rules, along with a very forgiving DM, let me build one. I'd appreciate an MMO based on a 3e-4e hybrid.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

I played this briefly when I was little. I remember it being very odd. It is a goo idea to do it. They could give it a retro feel as well.

I would play this. Haven't played Gamma since the 80's.

EDIT ~ Star Fleet Battles would be cool too, as I don't like Star Trek Online much.

Now that Infinite Crisis has failed and will shut down in August, Turbine and Wizards of the Coast should reassess the value of taking Gamma World into an MMORPG format. The post-apocalyptic setting for an MMORPG would be a nice diversion for those who care for the genre, and WoC may find it to be a double benefit that opens the door to potential PnP sales of a renewed Gamma World interest also.
Given the rise of the Fallout series, Walking Dead, etc. -- seems like Gamma World was ahead of its time and needs a reboot.

Despite being an awesome game I don't think Gamma world would work very well as a Video game let alone an MMO, imo Gamma world's fun has always been about it random anything goes playstyle and the reality is that needing to program and model that stuff works heavily against that

What if the game engine was coded to do just that -- crazy/mad randomization? A "GWO" would certainly require some out-of-the-box thinking in terms of game design from the onset, for it to be both true to the origins of PnP and yet remain satisfying as an MMO. I would think this would be a challenge that some game dev's, designers, etc. would love to take on.

I love gamma world but the father of that game would be a easy setting to handle. The Starship Warden of Metamorphsis Alpha and Jim Ward is still around to consult

If Gamma World were to be made into a video game today, it'd likely follow along with WotC's custom of doing so following the most recent version. In this case, that would be 2010's 7th Edition of GW. It was made on a gently modified version of 4th Edition D&D rules and gameplay. While many of the systems were fun, and I'll admit that it was the only 4e product I really enjoyed, it was not strongly supported by WotC - having only a handful of supplements in 2010, and nothing afterward.

Also, a lot of what made this version of Gamma World fun, the random character generation being the biggest one I can think of, would not translate into video game format very well.

It's nearly the exact same game, I fail to see how you dislike 4e but enjoy the 4e Gamma World...don't get me wrong there was a few differences but you put it perfectly it was only "gently modified"

I mean I love Eberron and Dark Sun but if they didn't exist I would still love DnD (Forgotten Realms despite not liking the setting was my first setting when I started playing DnD, which was early 3rd Edition)

    Context, mostly.

I don't think the 4e rules & approach were terrible, I just didn't enjoy them for Dungeons and Dragons itself. Apply those same rules to another setting, and they made more sense to me and the folks I game with. After playing both settings with the 4e rules, GW clicked - D&D did not.

After seeing some Fallout 4 progression and mods now available, it's saddening to know what "could have been" as I see a competing product win out. The PnP hopes of Gamma World don't seem very positive either, now that a platform (Xbox) or PC can produce much more visual satisfaction and randomization than a single DM could do with words.

Frankly, the only way "Gamma World" has any life to it, will be in a computerized version, and preferably an MMO. Otherwise, WOTC may as well let the franchise go dormant.

Oh wow I would *love* to see a version of Gamma World Online! Very fond memories of playing that in the 80s -- I still have the Albuquerque Spaceport GM screen somewhere. WOTC seems to be putting all their energies into building on the D&D 5e success these days (and doing very well, imo), and seem less interested in developing other IPs, so I'd be really surprised to see Gamma World get off the ground again.

Loved Metamorphosis Alpha(parent of gamma world) and 1st edition Gamma World but don't see it generating enough interest to support a MMO its more a niche game than ddo. A Fallout MMO might work though.

    Default Gamma World Rocks!

I have found memories of Gamma World. I would definitely play a Gamma World MMORPG, especially if it was open world with good character development/ options. I particularly loved 3rd edition, the modules were great; Kim Eastland did a great job. And the art was awesome! I’d also love to play a Star Frontiers MMORPG. Would be great to develop that title similar (not 100%) to that of the now deceased Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG; pre-NGE of course.
