    Thanks in advance

    Edit:

    - Less ranger, more rogue
    - Shadow dodge
    - Less pally defender due to use of light armor
    - Maxed disable device, locks, UMD
    - Swapped FoP for Dodge

I still think of using longswords over rapiers. What makes rapiers superior besides better crit range, and are they considered light weapons or do they require finesse?

    A few general comments:
    • DEX-based is usually a trap, but it's an even bigger trap on a build which, with an extra pal lvl, could take Div Might. Most of the time, I suggest sticking with STR+CHA-based; although if you have Harper, DEX+INT-based becomes a viable alternative.
    • If you do stick w/DEX-based, consider rog3 to take Shadow Dodge from Acrobat, which gets you +6 DEX
    • If you're ditching Evasion, then you might as well upgrade to hvy to max out your PRR/MRR. In which case, why are you going DEX-based, again?
    • Rapiers beat longswords in most circumstances.

I don't really know how to optimize a build properly yet, but I am at the point where I see options. And I see a lot of options in what you've put together.

It will be a challenge getting your max dex bonus to AC if you don't use light armor. If that is the case, consider heavy armor and switch to STR based. It works better for the oversized two-weapon fighting (if you stick with dual longswords) and offers a tiny bit of flexibility for enhancement points since you won't need the elven grace enhancements. You get much better MRR and PRR from heavy armour. I basically agree with unbogwah here.

If your disable device isn't maxed, you will have a tough time getting traps on elite. I noticed you had some shortfalls in lower and mid levels. I didn't count to make sure you made up for that in later levels.

If the 2 rogue is for evasion, you get that with level 9 ranger and could reduce to 1 rogue for the trapping skills. This gives you either more ranger or more paladin. If the rogue is for skill points, I would go less ranger and more rogue.

Why so many ranger levels? 6 ranger gets the core TWF feats and opens most of the tempest core.

Why so few paladin levels? more leves gets more core defender enhancements. Lots more gets spells.

Why have rogue in the build at all? Trapping is nice, but it's not really core to the stated goal of a tempest defender.

Thanks for replies, this is the kind of info I was looking when posting this build.

I totally forgot that evasion works only with light and/or no armor so its light armor for me then, same with getting evasion from ranger too.
Rogue levels are for traps/locks, and for the evasion, will check out that shadow dodge and see how it fits in.

Gonna do some tweaking to the build, maybe see how 11 ra/6 ro/3 pa works out.

    New try-out in first post.

    I'd go 15 ranger / 4 paladin / rogue 1
similar to noyellowbar but with traps, loses fighter 1 goodies

    Default Rapiers

Rapiers are not considered light weapons. To use DEX with rapiers you either need to take weapon finess OR the Aerenal Grace enhancements from the elf tree. The elf tree will give you DEX for longswords (which you want), rapiers, and longbows. It is part of what makes Elf a good choice for a DEX build since you don't need Weapon Finess to go DEX based if you stick to those weapons.

With the 3rd Ranger Tempest core, you will pick-up scimitars as an option for DEX based weapons, and you also get to treat them as light weapons; so you can use them as your off-hand weapon without finess.

To make it even more confusing, with the elf tree you can go valenar (or however it is spelled) instead of Aerenal and you get scimitars, short swords, and short bows boosted but then you would use valenar grace and not get the longsword boots. This stacks with the ranger tree scimitars for more damage from those but with your build, you lose out on the longswords.

My guess is you will stick with the longswords; so go for it. But you can play around with longswords, rapiers, and scimitars to see which does the best damage.

I think you can also add in daggers and kukris to the mix if you put enough points in the rogue assassin tree. All you lack is DEX to blunt damage but you can pick that up in the rogue acrobat tree with DEX for quarterstaffs (unfortinately, this doesn't take advantage of two weapon fighting) and you are spreading the enhancement point around quite a bit.

Since all of the above happens with enhancement points, it is easy to reset your trees and play around with different options to figure out what works bet for you. It just costs a little plat.

That's pretty much it; but crits are a very important part of your DPS. In the long run, a +10% crit chance (after Imp Crit feat) will be worth more than the extra base dmg from longswords. Also one of the best named epic 1H weapons is still Balizarde. Finally, while to-hit bonuses are less important than they used to be, you can get DEX to-hit w/rapiers if you take Finesse feat; that doesn't work on longswords, though.
and are they considered light weapons or do they require finesse?
Rapiers are the platypus of weapons: they're the only regular weapon which work with Weapon Finesse feat (which also makes them viable for Swashbucklers or Assassins w/Dagger in the Back).

    FWIW, here's a DEX-based elf rgr 15 / ftr 4 / rog 1 build w/Harper I came up with for someone else:

8 APs saved for Harper (Know the Angles) to make up for not having Div Might. Melee-focused (don't have a lot of APs to spare for AA or DWS, unfortunately), but with full ranged feats; Shadow DM & defensive stance help offset the squishiness of being stuck with light armor. Quicken+Emp Heal is for CSW and Rejuv Cocoon, the healing workhorses of the discerning rgr.

This would probably work much better with Valenar instead or Aereal, and scimitars instead long swords.

Anyway, if we skip the weapons and enhancements, would this build be any good later in the game, like past lvl10? Or am i wasting everyones time with this?

Different level split from what you planned, but I think it could have similar flavour.
    What about 15pal/3rng/2rog?

2 rogue is for evasion and rogue skills
3 ranger is for feats, 10% offhand proc and dex to hit with scimitars (you can have dex to damage too with elf grace)
15 paladin is for zeal (+10% doublestrike) and Holy Sword (more crits, higher damage crits)
Synergy perk: if choosing Undying Court you get +1 to hit with scimitars

Nowadays paladins are so good that you can't avoid going 15 on a Lawful Good toon.
Edit: I mean, paladins are so "lawful good" :P

Edit 2: I indeed played a PnP elf paladin, although as an archer. The Graceful Gwendolin, Elvish Paladin. Goes without saying, he was a male elf ...with a unicorn mout

The problem with Valenar is it boosts shortbows, not longbows; all the best named bows are longbows. Plus there aren't any epic named scimitars as good as Balizarde, IMHO; best you can do is probably EE Frostbite.

    Default Progress update =)

I've been playing this build to lvl 10 now, and have to say it's been quite easy, though bit boring as I dont have any active skills to use besides smite evil (1 use), sunder and trip =), all enhs are passive. Tweaked enhancements bit to get grace asap, and took +1 arrows from AA since I never remember to buy them. Going solo (with hired cleric) 100% as of now. I will continue to level up. and will come back for another update.

Currently using dual shadowforged long swords, and Silver longbow. Grinded bow at lvl 7 and swords at lvl 9 in normal difficulty. Rest of the gear I have atm I've found or bought from ah. Also only used +2 int tome at lvl 7, so they arent vital except +2 str before lvl 15.

Only place Ive had to use heal pots was some spider quest (dont remember its name, quest is lvl12 normal) when I was lvl 9.
