This is 100% true....Shield Charge in Devil assault when first time did it today proved amazing.
You get like 5 mobs and with 1 click 2 or 3 of them are stunned.

This become my best skill so far after smite and and shield smash which have a very low cool down timer.

I've added a simple b.sword vs d.axe DPS comparison to the second post.

With the shield it's over 400.

Maybe the weapon i'm using sucks i don't know but really shield bash is amazing.
This depends...what other feats do you have? As for your other question regarding your shield bash % that sounds like a bug, but I've not come across it myself.

I've finally updated my first post with a U29 build including leveling guide. I'm sticking with my original suggestion of "level with 2H weapons until 12, then switch to S&B." For an example of a S&B pally from lvl 1, see ED37's thread.

EDIT: here are the original builds archived for posterity.

Here's what the build would look like at lvl 12 as a THF KotC build:

Skills: definitely max Intimidate; I would also max Concentration and either UMD or Heal. If you take a +2 INT tome at lvl 7, the extra skill pts can go into Balance.

The main drawback to this approach, as you can probably tell, is that investing in the THF chain on top of the Shield Mastery feats chews up almost all of your heroic feats, with little room left for anything else. So for the second build, we'll try something different: a dwarf using warhammers (which don't get glancing blows) who is a little more tactics-oriented; this build is also designed to be exclusively S&B from lvl 3 on, so you can see some of the tradeoffs more clearly.

[QUOTE=unbongwah;5474286]Kundarak Vanguard: dwarf build which takes advantage of the +7% S&B DPS from Dwarf Fortress; the downside being it costs 18 APs so I had to make compromises in Sacred D. and KotC to get it. It also goes for Dreadnought for max sustained melee DPS. This version can be specced for either heavy picks or warhammers: the advantage of not using dwarven axes is it frees 3 feats (4 if you count PTHF); the downside is losing glancing blows.

Wait, if you're taking Exalted Cleave, why do you take Cleave and Great Cleave at all?

You need Cleave feat in order to unlock Momentum Swing; since there's not enough APs to take Avenging Cleave (which would lock out T5 Vanguard anyway), it's up to you whether Gt Cleave is worthwhile to have an extra AoE atk. That's also part of why I didn't spec that build for THF chain w/d.axes; feats are pretty tight already.

Update 23 really buffed up paladins: Turbine introduced the Vanguard PrE, improved KotC and Sacred Defender, and upgraded the Holy Sword spell, making it one of the best DPS bonuses in DDO. There's never been a better time to play a classic S&B pally. This thread supplants my Sacred Defender builds; rather than retread everything I said there, I'll just spotlight some of the key changes lately. This thread will be devoted to pure pallies for the Vanguard capstone and the extra lvl 4 spell slots (Zeal, Holy Sword, CSW, Death Ward).

The main goals of any DDO tank build have always been good DPS, good survivability, and enough threat to hold onto mob aggro. U23 has really improved the DPS of paladins in general and S&B pallies in particular (thanks to Vanguard), while keeping the survivability and tanking capabilities they've always had. U23 also improved the defensive benefits of medium & heavy armor by improving PRR and adding MRR; in particular, MRR means you no longer have to feel pigeon-holed into having Evasion to get good protection from Reflex-based spell damage. EDIT: the U28 balance changes eliminated armor MRR, which makes other sources of MRR more important.

Now, all of that being said, my recommendation is that you are still better off using 2H weapons to start and switch to S&B later on. Why? Partly because the DPS bonuses for 2H weapons are pretty front-loaded: +1.5x STR mod to dmg; higher base weapon dmg; +10 dmg from Power Atk (after BAB 5+) vs +5 to 1H weapons. Partly because there are a number of good low-lvl 2H weapons to use, esp. Carnifex. And partly because you have few APs to spend early on, so it's better to split them between two PrEs (KotC and SD) rather than all three. And partly because Vanguard is a backloaded PrE, IMO, which doesn't start hitting its potential until lvl 12.

So this build presumes you use 2H weapons thru lvl 11, then switch to S&B and tier-5 Vanguard at lvl 12. For an example of a S&B pally starting from lvl 1, see ED37's VG pally thread. Or just rearrange the feat order & Enhancements yourself.

    4. Legendary Tactics (Tier 1 Dreadnought)
If you have a +2 INT tome at lvl 7, max Concentration and put remaining pts into Balance or Heal.

Epic feats: as you can see, I listed a lot of options, which will largely depend on whether you want to emphasize DPS or survivability; I list the survivability option first, DPS option second. As for your Scion choice: Arborea is the no-brainer DPS boost (+2 Enhancement bonus, +20 Melee Power); while Plane of Water is +20 MRR and +2d20 cold dmg, so it adds both survivability & DPS, but downside is needing to slot Glaciation gear (you can reach approx. 500 Glaciation Spellpower in current endgame, so approx. 125 cold dmg per hit).

The listed Twists are a best-case scenario and presumes you've leveled almost all of your EDs. But the only must-have IMO is Legendary Shield Mastery for the extra doublestrike & PRR; so fill in the rest as you see fit while leveling.
I'm sorry if this seems like a dense question, but why would you swap out Force of Personality instead of Improved or Greater THF if you are switching to S&B? I wouldn't think you would need the THF feats if you are switching to bastard swords. What am I missing?

Glancing blows apply to bastard swords and dwarven axes while single-wielded.

    Late to the party...

Ungbongwah, I warned that I would bug you about Paladin in my Returning Sorc build!

I have played the Two handed Fighter lives before (A lot) mainly as WF FVS and WF PLD and THF Acrobat...I would just Smash Cleave and Great Cleave etc...

So I kinda wanna do something different for 2 Paladin Lives.

My biggest problem...this toon has Completionist...and on Paladin, it seems really hard to fit this feat in (not a humble brag, I am actually considering not picking it, or picking it way later like level 15 or 18)

So I want to do a Sword and Board PLD. The closest to Sword and Board I have played was a Swashbuckling Bard which was stupidly fun.

I have random doubled up lives on random classes (WIZ, Sorc, Druid, Bard, Artificer)

Not planning on using a Lesser Heart, because I think the most efficient way would be load up on THF feats and swap those to Shield related feats later. I agree with Ungbongwah that Vangaurd gets good at level 12
Anyway, here are my ideas so far...

    Human Paladin
Stats...Standard..Dump DEX and WIS, have 12 INT for skills and get good STR CON CHR
    Feats
    1 Power Attack
1(H) Cleave (Swap to Shield Mastery Later at level 12) or maybe not...I could use KotC Cleave until later...
    3 Improved Shield Bash
    6 Completionist
    9 Improved Crit
    12 Improved Shield Master
15 Bastard Sword or Tower Shield or something else?
18 Empower Heal (Though may want this earlier?)
21(not worried about Epic Feats...will probably TR right away at 20)

This toon has Torc and Concord Opp...Was thinking turtling with Leviks and Torc and C/O I could regain my SP.
I also have 3 Deathnips (1 old one...hope they let me trade it in one day for Tomes like a Dopant for green steel) and those neat Expanded Crit Sickles from my Swashbuckler Life...so they might be really good?
I do not have any nice Green Steel single handed weapons other than a C/O Warhammer which I use when turtling for SP.
I do have a Triple Pos Maul and Lit2 GSW
I can almost make another Tome of Legend Weapon (Iono which I would make)

    Shields:
Death's Door, Fanion (useless on this build?), and I have enough Shield Pieces to make a Talon...

My thinking is...if I plan on mainly using a Talon over the Levik's except when SP Turtling...I really do not need Tower Shield Prof for that...

Also maybe Dwarf would be good since I will be using Deathnips, though I feel that Enhancements will be really tight?

If I did a Dwarf...here is my thinking for feats

    1 Power Attack
    3 Improved Shield Bash
    6 Shield Master
    9 Imp Crit
    12 Improved Shield Mastery
    15 ????Empower Heal????Completionist????
    18 ????Empower Heal????Completionist????

Master's Touch scrolls grant tower shield proficiency, which is one reason why I like having UMD on pure pallies. No need to squander a feat.

TBH, I don't think Vanguard is a great choice for heroic leveling, for the reasons cited earlier in the thread: you're feat-constrained and AP-starved for a long time; and your best DPS bonuses are really backloaded. Although I suppose the silver lining is if you can slog your way thru the first 14-15 levels, you see a big jump in DPS: +10% atk speed from VG cores, T5 abilities like +10 MP & Shield Charge, Holy Sword + Zeal, etc. Deathnip becomes a 16-20/x5 weapon which is just insane. But it still feels to me like pally VG is meant primarily for epic tanking.

That being said, I've been itching to come up with a dwarven Onatar Vanguard since the new deity feats came out, even though I'm not sure you can hit high enough DCs for it to matter. But I've got more than one alt with a Mornh in its bank (thanks, Raiders Boxes!), so why not?

I really like this build you got. You always make great builds. I am going to borrow most of it, but at the moment I am focusing on a Sacred Defender to complete my collection. My Vangard Paladin is a smashing success, literally. Hits EE regularly and wins. He is a Bladeforged. For my Sacred Defender I am going with PDK, already got the +1 heart and am going to TR him once (he is currently human). So he will have 34 starting stat points and a past life in paladin. Most of my collect-able TPS farming toons just live one life up to level 30, and from there I just look for better and better stuff to finish them. There just isnt time to TR 56 toons. I have one Main Toon, and a few TR'd here and there.

    So,

    Nortain Bloodtin
    PDK
    Paladin 20
    Sacred Defender
    Sentinal

This build is basically heavily tanked up, but will use bastard sword, sheild, and THF. Best crits can get are x4, but DPS isnt his primary focus. It is tempting to use Khopeshs... my Vangard uses Khopesh and Shield and it works great. But PDK... Charisma on Bastard Sword... I think with proper weapons he can still manage to kill EE stuff (nightmare cheese from Thunderpeak.... if you can't get awesome DPS on a sacred defender sentinal uber tank... you can fall back on terrorizing your enemies with nightmare weapons :P).

I am thinking to hit 41 for Defender, 3 on PDK, a little into avenger, and a nice chunk into vangard. Will aim to get shield bash and attack speed rate up as much as possible from Vangard core without losing Sacred Defender caps. I am going to make it now... follower of Helm seems to make sense...

And off I go to rebuild him now.

    Great thread, just found it.

Made a Dwarven Max Vanguard build similar to yours but ended up sticking with Dwarven Axes, Throw Your Weight Around and Dwarf Fortress Enhancement.

Due to this choice, I am a little light on HP. Max upgraded my Con but am left short on the SD tree. Still only level 20 so I am hoping I can recover some HP in my Epic levels.

DPS is amazing so far and atm not having problems with the low 800 HP at 20, but haven't tanked any EE raids yet so I guess I have more testing to do.

    Any thoughts?

Truth be told, TYWA is a trap on this build, IMO, not least because Divine Might won't boost your DPS in that case. I'm not sure any of the racial trees are worth a heavy investment, but I definitely would skip TYWA and stick with Dwarf Fortress as my dwarf pally does. You get +20% HPs from Tenacious Defense and +4% from Child of the Mountain; that's a pretty significant boost, particularly if you're undergeared.

Hmmm... I was just writing up on what to do to TR my Pala... this is interesting!

So Charisma for damage, Intel for boost.

    I lose this though

"Shield gains +1 critical threat range, +1 critical multiplier, +1(W), and additional +5% (total 15%) Combat Style bonus to Melee Attack Speed."

After making a pure Vanguard Bladeforged, I find that shield can be really effective to bring up DPS with that crit and speed bonus. I might not get the full +20%, but even 15% feels better then 10%. Would adding half my intelligence to damage beat this?

Supposing I reach intelligence 60, which would be challenging for this kind of build, that lands in +25/2 for +12 damage.

The shields I think will hit harder when gaining a +1 crit and going off 5% faster with bashing boosts. Plus he gets to roar more often, that is so... like the original character! I am gonna borrow from this though and try to merge it with a 41 Defender / 31 Vanguard mix. Your insights are always very useful!

You asked specifically about a Sacred Defender / Unyielding Sentinel combo. SD capstone costs 41 APs, leaving only 39 for your other PrEs. If you went 41 SD / 31 VG / 3 PDK for CKT, that's only 5 left - not enough to KtA, which is the whole point to being CHA+INT-based. So you give up that lvl 18 VG core; or you give up the DC / dmg bonus from KtA and Exalted Cleave. I felt the AP spread was the least bad option for what you requested.

I told you it was a flavor build. Otherwise you might as well stick with a more conventional DPS-oriented VG, IMO.

Then I would end up with 2 Vanguards, Ttankk Crush Crush and Nortian Bloodtin. And my collection would be missing Sacred Defender..

Off course I could just switch them :P Bladeforged probably make better defenders anyways with Scribing Mark etc.. but that means losing core tier 5 on Vanguard, which seems to be the best splash option I can see when those shields are bashing 50% of the time and dealing crits stacks on crits (x2 range. x5 damage from holy sword). Not sure if improved crits: bludgeoning would extend that range even further, but probably not worth it on a feat starved paladin.

Ttankk Crush Crush is doing great in EE, smashing up to the enemies and hounding them with shield stuns.

Nortain Bloodtin has great defense, but as I have him now he has the divine might and exhalted cleave and his DPS isn't like Ttankk's. He might not be the best S & B DPS melee, but he will be among the toughest. Still, scrambling to get that DPS up as much as possible despite the Defender prestige constraint, I am gonna try giving up 2 feats somehow to grab cleave so I can twist Momentum into Sentinel Destiny... I figure he should be tough enough since Sentinel barely adds anything to DPS, having more cleave combat moves seems effective and fun both. He will probably live long enough to see them used regularly. Is there a better twist to take running in Sentinel to pump up DPS for mobs and bosses?

The problem with a BF Vanguard (if you want to call it that): you need to spend at least 7 APs for Recon SLA and will most likely spend 11 to minimize the CD; at which point you might as well spend 5 more APs for Power of the Forge (PotF). Then you spend 41 in VG (or SD) and suddenly...oops, you only have 25 to 32 APs left for your other two PrEs.

This is part of why I prefer human or PDK for pally VG: only 1-5 APs into your racial tree gets you a bunch of useful goodies (i.e., Dmg Boost, first rank of heal amp, CKT if CHA-based PDK); leaving plenty of APs free for the pally PrEs. Add in the extra feat(s) - PDK VG pally is effectively three feats ahead of BF thanks to racial bonus feat, free b.sword prof from Helm, and not needing Adamantine Body feat (which is enough to buy the THF chain) - and it's clearly the better choice, IMO.

Have you tried a Vanguard Pally in Reaper on Lamaland? Is it still worth running. Im a bit afraid it could be too low dps and too low defense to be effectively working, so it will be a bad tank and bad dps.... (can't test it, currently on bard life...)

    Default New Deity

Has anyone tested out the new Deity feats? Follower of Onatar with warhammers? I was TR'ing my dwarf pally and seeing if it would be wise to stick dwarf and test that out or go human this time around
