Default YourDDO 3rd Annual Holiday Giveaway

Heya DDO'ers. Ague here. Popping in to talk about YourDDO's Third Annual Holiday Giveaway. This year we are going to be doing a two part giveaway.

Part 1: Everyone wanting to participate in this part of the giveaway needs to post a YouTube link to their favorite "Holiday" song. Please explain in your post why this is your favorite holiday song. This post will close on 01 December 2014 at 0000 (midnight) GMT. (Please use worldtimebuddy.com to see where you are based off of GMT if you don't already know.)

The top 10 (ten) will be chosen after 01 Dec using an interactive poll directly on YourDDO's website. The poll will close on 10 Dec 14. The top five people will win 500 Turbine Points and a Yellow Gelatinous Cube Creature Companion and the second five will win 500 TP. But don't worry, it doesn't end there.

Part 2: The top ten (10) will be automatically entered in for the main jackpot of 2,500 Turbine Points!!! The 2,500 TP contest will be separate from the Cube contest so there's no telling (yet!) what will happen for that part of the contest. Best of luck to everyone that enters and happy holidays!

    ~~Ague

p.s. The snow will be coming on YourDDO soon... Still a little too early to make it fall...

EDIT: Please no duplicate songs!! The first person to post a song is the contender, so make sure to read the thread before posting. The song doesn't need to have a video with it per-se... So long as the audio is present is all that is required. One entry per forum account please.

    Without a doubt, I'm claiming Queen's "A Winter's Tale". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjWQZBmJf6M

Said to be the last song Freddie Mercury recorded, it has some of that melancholic feel, while at the same time staying hopeful.

The melody is smooth and pleasant, Freddie's vocals are strong as always, and, most of all, it isn't a regular take on holiday songs - From the lyrics it can only be implied to be a christmas song. I love how the song conveys the christmas 'feelings' without using the usual "Santa claus, pine trees, presents!" facet.

So, all in all, that's my entry - In my opinion a very good song, that conveys its holiday theme indirectly, in a way that leaves you better than before you listened to it.

    Default I've got a present for Santa . . .

I've Got a Present for Santa, by The Generators.

Classic Torch singer doing a sultry jazz number. Don't remember the name of the singer, but other members of the band include Billy Mummy (sp?) and Miguel Ferrar.

Very funny, full of innuendo. Great Christmas song.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer. It came out when I was a teenager, and for some reason it amused me. Each year, I know it is Christmas season when I finally hear this song someplace.

Carol of the bells. I know it's more classic than cool, but it's always been one of my favorites. This one is by the Trans Siberian Orchestra.

From the original Charlie Brown Chrismas Special - it has that perfect combination of soft haunting minor-key tune with hopeful lyrics that makes it my favorite.

Default God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". I've always loved the ancient sound of the song, and this Annie Lennox version captures the feel very well.

The simplicity of the music, the clarity of Martina's voice, and the minor chording make this the most beautiful Christmas song ever performed in my opinion.

Cool It's Christmas Time In Hell

Why should devils, undead, evil outsiders, and, well, most of the baddies in DDO be left out of the holidays?
So grab your disco ball and Taken cookies, put on some fire absorption, and head on down to the Devil Battlefield this (anything-but-cool) Yule!

When we get oversaturated with Christmas music everywhere we go, it's easy to get tired of hearing the same songs over and over. This is one song that I've never gotten tired of: the lyrics are full of realism about people, but also hope for better times, which to me embodies the spirit of Christmas.

    "It was Christmas Eve babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
    The Rare Old Mountain Dew
    I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you

    Got on a lucky one
    Came in eighteen to one
    I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
    So happy Christmas
    I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true..."

Peter, Paul, and Mary performing A Soalin'.

To give everyone a little background, the practice of giving away 'soul cakes' during All Hallow's Eve (Halloween), All Saint's Eve (Day After Halloween), and All Soul's Day (Day after that). These cakes, usually referred to as souls, are given out to soulers (primarily consisting of children and the poor) who go from door to door during the 3 days of Allhallowtide, both singing and saying prayers for the dead. The practice of giving and eating soul cakes continues in several countries today. In many other countries, this is seen as the origin of trick-or-treating.

In the song, PP&M diverge slightly from tradition and refer to Christmas instead of All Soul's Day, transforming it into a wonderful holiday rendition of a song originally written in 1891.

"Soul, a soul, a soul cake, please good missus a soul cake.
An apple, a pear, a plum, a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry,
One for Peter, two for Paul, three for Him who made us all.

Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace..
This holy tide of Christmas of beauty and of grace,
Oh tidings of comfort and joy."

    RIP Mary.
