Default how much monk do i take

going for a monkee past life so epic is not applicable.

Capstone seem unappealing so was thinking of splashing fighter

    looks like
    18/2
    17/3
    15/5
    16/4

18/2 means no taking stances as feats, but only access to 2nd tier
17/3 taking stance and having access to 3rd tier
    15/5 16/4 higher tiers

whats the best trade off here?

It doesn't really matter that much. Hell u could go pure 2 and pawn all the way through. You could go with a 12 split and toss ranger in there for a quick monkcher build. You could even take 8 fighter, and monk to center yourself using a 2 handed weapon, or whatever the specialty taken is.

Monk goes with everything, is survivable as hell, and kills stuff just as fast. You could even go monk 11 9 rog but take the rog to start with a couple monk lvs. The reason for this is much like another build just not as extreme, all the SA dmg a rog gets is forced onto a stunned mob. (They die so quick its ridiculous.) You can use bluff to do the same, a improved deception item stacked with hand wraps. Just lots of ways to force sa.

Consider also 9 monk/x/x since 9 monk gives improved evasion.
For a past life, note also that trappers get access to some nice xp bonuses, so rogue levels might be nice to speed up the grind.
You can splash druid for fatal harrier attack speed bursts (learned this recently in a post here). Lots you can do.
I have a stealth build I am working on with variants like 9 monk 6 wiz (EK) 5 rogue but it is Dex based and very much a 'flavor' type

Keeping in mind that most TR builds usually only build to level 18, I've seen a lot of 6/6/8 type builds where the builder uses there preferred class first and then a complementary class and then the class they want to TR into and reserve the levels 19/20 for the class they are wanting the past life in.

Such as 6 Fighter/6 Ranger/6 Monk to level 18. This gives you the ability to play the character from the beginning in a way you like to play and then just adds a twist in its power from level 13+

The only considerations are Alignment restrictions and making sure you pick the alignment needed for the class.

For just a past life I'd do either 9 or 12: 9 for imp evasion or 12 for abundant step
    The rest is all flavor
    6 Ranger
    5 or 7 wiz
    3 druid
    4,7,9 cleric
    4,8 FvS
    2,3,4,5,8 fighter
    2,3,6 Pally
    1,3,5,7,9 rogue
or some combo of the above depending on if your doing range or melee

If going for a monk past life I either do pure monk or 1/19 rogue/monk especially now that you can get up to 30% for traps. I have 3 characters with 3 monk past lives its always fun to me
