    Default Commando (11 Rng/6 Rog/3 Arti)

Not sure what to call this build, but the concept was using the SLA Lightning Sphere (quickened) as 'grenades', a repeater x-bow as the 'machine gun', has maxed out hide, move silent, disable device, open lock, search, spot, UMD, and some other skills, as well as Improved Evasion through evasive dance (tempest), and 41 meter point blank shot/sneak attack range, 28% Dodge, and really good saves (I believe - due to Half Elf Pal Dilly and Insightful Reflexes). Btw, pure INT build.

and if need be, can be flipped to melee with only a few quick changes (subpar to ranged, but it can be done)... using either shiradi, fury, or LD... but most likely would use Shiradi with twists for extra action boosts for the Attack Speed AB's.

Looking for any ideas, does it look good or bad, room for improvement, anything? Would test it on Lamannia, but it's closed and probably won't open again for a few weeks =/

Needs more min-maxing. Maxout INT. It's your main stat. Damage, Reflex saves, skills.

Dump artificers SLAs. Pure arties drop them at high levels, so not sure your SLA will do much with only 3 artificer level. More 'focus'. If you mix too much you will end with that jack of all trades, master of none. The common factor for ranger/rogue/artificer is ranged or melee. It looks like you want 'ranged'. So do it.

Mix bow(manyshot) and repeater for more oomph. Quick Draw feat helps here.

You know about Harper Tree, right?

Cute idea, but what exactly do you expect these to do for you? With only 3 arty lvls, the DPS will be negligible; your DCs will be at least 4 and probably 5 behind what a mostly-pure arty with Heighten can achieve; and even if they land, Spheres proc daze not stun, which means no bonus dmg vs helpless mobs.

I'm also not sure why you invested so heavily in CHA. Did Turbine buff HE pally dilly so it no longer caps out at +5 when I wasn't looking? Because that would be a pleasant surprise.
Would test it on Lamannia, but it's closed and probably won't open again for a few weeks =/
U23 goes live today; Lama won't reopen until it's time to test U24. I think you'll be waiting more than a few weeks for that...

Yep, aware of Harper tree, and if need be I will drop 3 pts into it for the int to attack part and get the int to damage from rogue mechanic (since it is not hard to get), or if add more Arti, get Insightful Damage, or last resort spend 12 into Harper and get both Int Att/Dam... so, 3 options there... And yeah, couple with what I see on Ubongwah's comments, I agree, I will probably not put pts into cha at all, and drop those pts into Int instead... since 8 base + 5 tome is 13, only need a +7 item to max out possible cha-saves bonus. I do want to have 'some' dex due to needing it for Dodge/Mobility/Shot on the Run/Spring Attack (if possible, extra dodge is nice to help avoid some incoming damage)

How does Quick Draw help on Repeaters? I thought only Rapid Reload and Rapid Shot affected Repeaters... Thanks for input btw =)

I was more looking at the SLA's as 'flashbangs' in effect. Yeah, damage will be minimal, and no true stunning... but, it is an "auto-3 second daze" for anyone affected. I would use the rogue mechanic version, but apparently, the save on it is equally useless and does not matter, except in the opposite direction. The mechanic version is 'only damage' and the stun is auto-passed by all affected... makes it next to useless. With a 4-sp flashbang, I can do a 3-second daze (3 second CD as well I believe), so worst case scenario is I can perma-daze a small group for the party to walk through... at the very least I can daze them, and with nerve venom maybe paralyze a decent portion of the group while getting a 'surprise attack'?

And no, they didn't change HE dilly lol... thanks for noting that, I will drop cha almost entirely, a +7 item will top me off plenty for the saves (due to +5 tomes)... =)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I am really trying to figure this out, things I am pointedly asking about (in addition to the basic critiques, which are most welcome!) are things like:

    - Is there a better race? (has to be a fleshie, I hate WF/BF, tried several times to play them, I just can't do it. And no Half-Orc or PDK, too large, all other races are fine I think, and HE may be subpar to another race, let me know if you think another would better fit the build/concept)

    - Class mix is questionable. (Rng/Rog/Arti is just what I saw as being the best to emulate a modern day or sci-fi spec ops Soldier/Combat Engineer... if there is a better mix, I'm all ears and will run the numbers and all that... but, the concept is what I am after, just want it as efficient as possible while maintaining that integrity of 'machine gun, grenades, SEAL-Team' type approach)

    - Feats/Enhancements (I entertained the possibility of another approach that gave me some pts in the assassin tree as well, enough to get to 3 pts in Killer, and some other ideas... but if anyone sees a potential improvement in the feat/enhancement selection, let me know, like I said, this was the best I could come up with so far, and I'm sure other people who play ranged toons would know more about how to maximize efficiency there, since I don't play ranged, and want to try this out)

Over all, I want to stick to the concept, because for me, enjoying a character is about being able to do well, but also having fun doing it... and fun for me is having a concept that I enjoy and looking good. I can take care of the looking good part, and coming up with a concept... but maximizing that "doing the job well"? Not so good at that part...

Will redo the build with less cha and more int, though... that makes a lot of sense. Please let me know about that Quick Draw w/Repeaters thing... if it actually helps make the build faster and deadlier, then awesome!

Idea with Quick Draw is to switch faster between bow (when manyshot available) and repeater. It doesn't effect repeater/bow/melee, delay after you switch weapons is smaller.

I'd also go with harpers INT to damage. Works on anything, so repeater, bow and melee. INT based damage boost (like DM) is also nice.

Idea is to use INT for damage from Harpers tree, use manyshot with bow when available, then repeater.

Not planning on using a bow... manyshot is something I had not even looked at, and honestly, was trying to find a way to get a level extra of Arti in there for Endless Fusillade... Thinking about dropping Rogue, grabbing an extra few lvls or Arti instead... 11 Rng/6 Arti/3 (not sure)... because Endless Fusillade would work better for this build I think, would grant an extra feat (4 arti), give Insightful Damage (saves me 9 AP, can spend 3 to get Int Att in Harper Tree, and use Insightful Damage for the Int Dam)... but what to do with 3 levels... Ranger 11 will still give me Improved Evasion, and Arti will give the Trapper part, and both have great skill pt allotments...

Any suggestions on how to spend 3 lvls that will work well with this? And is Half Elf a good way to go?

The Doubleshot penalty from Manyshot means that ironically this build will probably be better off sticking with repeaters exclusively.

If you have Harper, it seems to make more sense to go for Strategic Combat + Know the Angles (which AFAIK affects ranged combat); that would let you drop Targeting Sights. With Insightful Reflexes, this build becomes SAD, as INT becomes your to-hit, dmg, and Reflex stat. The only thing you need DEX for is Precision and perhaps Dodge, unless you want Combat Archery.

I wouldn't neglect melee: after all, you'll have GTWF and Precision, why not pick up an Imp Crit feat as well? Besides, surely a Commando knows when to get up close & personal.

Ok, I was working with the idea of dropping rogue entirely, since I get evasion/imp evasion from Ranger, and get trapper skills from arti. So, I made a dwarf version that used the 3 extra levels for Paladin (to get more oomph out of the cha bonus) and it looks ok... But, if I do like you suggest, I can drop Cha back down, grab 'just' enough dex to get Dodge/Precision, and go with a couple lvls of ftr to help make up the feats (IC (melee weapon type), and Precision)... and thus the build would be Half-Elf 12 Rng/6 Art/2 Ftr... Seem more likely to be min/max efficient?

If you're moving away from rog splash, what about a bard splash instead? You can't Swashbuckle with repeaters, ofc, but I believe Blow by Blow works w/out it; also Fast Movement & Doubleshot boost which should stack w/Dmg Boost from HE/human tree. Technically Coup de Grace works w/out Swashbuckling too, but you have to spend a lot of APs on filler to get it on a non-Swashbuckling build. Still, you could have Lightning Sphere to daze targets and ranged CdG to finish them off. So something like arty 3 / bard 5 / rgr 12, maybe? Or rgr 11 for an extra lvl of arty or bard instead.

Ok, rebuilt as a dwarf (just something about a dwarven commando... hmm, sounds awesome somehow)... Dropped Rogue in lieu of 3 Paladin, and 6 Arti, Still 11 Ranger... took your advice on the balancing out melee with ranged, without losing ranged power. To do this, I picked out the dual wielding enhancements in tempest, grabbed oversized TWF, and IC: Slashing... so now the Dwarven Commando can dual wield dwarven axes in a pinch, and make a decent showing at it. Also, since I didn't really need to work so hard on grabbing Cha (despite having 3 paladin, which I can still get to 29 Charisma with 11 item and 3 item, which puts only 3 Cha from max for 3 paladin), allowed me to pump Dex to 16 for start, with +5 tome, gets me to 21 for Combat Archery. I still want to go Int main for extra skill points as well as being main stat for search/disable, but if I have the pts to get CA for +1[W], why not, right?

Check this out, let me know what you think!

Made another iteration... This time I realized that all I was gaining by going 11 Ranger instead of 6, was IPS and some spells I'd probably never be too awfully concerned with... so, I dropped the 11 back to 6 for 5 extra lvls to play with... Then considered that maybe the Rogue was a bit useful, so checked the Enhancements again, and found 10% Doubleshot sitting at the top of the mechanic tree (a tree which I was already considering for the 3rd core enhancement to use Int for Damage, since if it was on the way to get something, it would only benefit me to grab it for the extra AP; as opposed to Strategic Combat II being 9 more AP, beyond the 3 for SC I, in a tree that really does not benefit me that much)

So, If I grab SC I for 3 pts, and get 3rd core on Mech for Int to Dam, then I don't need more than 3 Artificer for the SLA. That gives me 11 Lvls to throw into Rogue. And after building, and still going with dwarf, I end up with decent saves, 10% DS from feat, 10% from T5 Mech enhancement, and Killer (potential to get 20% more), for a potential 40% Doubleshot... along with still having Imp. Evasion, maxed out skills, and actually a ton of HP, along with combat archery still included.

So, here is another version of the build, let me know... trying to hammer this out before I TR, since looks like I might try this one out! (even use an xbox 360 controller, and have right trigger set for base attacking, so may go first person, and play the game like it is CoD or BF lol)
