I was thinking of trying a Rogue 14 / Ranger 6 Sneak attacker with some ranged abilities.
Has anyone seen a build like this. I just TR'd and am at level one rogue, so have not done anything drastic yet.

I've got a build on Cannith that's 13 rogue/6 ranger/1 artificer and I love it. Repeater build with all the rogue-y goodness, the fun stuff from DWS and a level of arty for "unlimited" bolts and a metal puppy to pull levers for you. Very solo-able mostly because critters die before they come anywhere near it. The weakness I found was undead. But that's easily solvable by being lucky enough to get a holy disruption repeater.
Critzilla in custom character builds is flexible enough to give any past life.
She's an elf, 1 rogue, 1 arty, 6 ranger, then the rest were rogue. Arty level one gets Exotic weapon proficency: (Great Crossbow, Repeating Light Crossbow and Repeating Heavy Crossbow). But you get proficiency in both light and heavy repeaters with the 3rd and 4th Mechanic core enheancements. So you could throw a level of fighter or monk or something in there instead of arty if you don't mind carrying around a truckload of bolts and/or conjure bolts scrolls. (They fixed those, right?)
As per usual, tomes aren't necessary, but I have +4's for all her stats.Code:Character Plan by DDO Character Planner Version 04.19.02 DDO Character Planner Home Page Snyper Level 20 True Neutral Elf Female (13 Rogue \ 6 Ranger \ 1 Artificer) Hit Points: 282 Spell Points: 235 BAB: 15\15\20\25\25 Fortitude: 13 Reflex: 23 Will: 9 Starting Feat/Enhancement Abilities Base Stats Modified Stats (32 Point) (Level 1) (Level 20) Strength 10 14 Dexterity 19 30 Constitution 14 18 Intelligence 14 20 Wisdom 9 13 Charisma 8 12 Starting Feat/Enhancement Base Skills Modified Skills Skills (Level 1) (Level 20) Balance 8 33 Bluff 2 24 Concentration 2 4 Diplomacy -1 1 Disable Device 6 30 Haggle -1 1 Heal -1 1 Hide 8 38 Intimidate -1 1 Jump 4 12 Listen -1 9 Move Silently 8 36 Open Lock 8 31 Perform n/a n/a Repair 2 7 Search 6 36 Spellcraft 2 5 Spot 3 32 Swim n/a n/a Tumble 5 11 Use Magic Device 3 27 Level 1 (Rogue) Feat: (Selected) Point Blank Shot Level 2 (Artificer) Level 3 (Ranger) Feat: (Favored Enemy) Favored Enemy: Undead Feat: (Selected) Least Dragonmark of Shadow Level 4 (Ranger) Level 5 (Ranger) Level 6 (Ranger) Feat: (Selected) Dodge Level 7 (Ranger) Feat: (Favored Enemy) Favored Enemy: Evil Outsider Level 8 (Ranger) Level 9 (Rogue) Feat: (Selected) Mobility Level 10 (Rogue) Level 11 (Rogue) Level 12 (Rogue) Feat: (Selected) Improved Critical: Ranged Weapons Level 13 (Rogue) Level 14 (Rogue) Level 15 (Rogue) Feat: (Selected) Improved Precise Shot Level 16 (Rogue) Level 17 (Rogue) Feat: (Rogue Bonus) Improved Evasion Level 18 (Rogue) Feat: (Selected) Greater Two Weapon Fighting Level 19 (Rogue) Level 20 (Rogue) Feat: (Rogue Bonus) Opportunist Enhancement: Elf - Elven Accuracy (Rank 1) Enhancement: Elf - Elven Dexterity (Rank 1) Enhancement: Elf - Keen Senses (Rank 1) Enhancement: Elf - Keen Senses (Rank 2) Enhancement: Elf - Keen Senses (Rank 3) Enhancement: Elf - Nothing is Hidden (Rank 1) Enhancement: Elf - Nothing is Hidden (Rank 2) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Arbalester (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Tanglefoot (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Targeting Sights (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Improved Detection (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Crossbow Training (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Mechanics (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Mechanics (Rank 2) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Awareness (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Awareness (Rank 2) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Awareness (Rank 3) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Crossbow Training (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Wand and Scroll Mastery (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Wand and Scroll Mastery (Rank 2) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Wand and Scroll Mastery (Rank 3) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Skill Boost (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Use Magical Device (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Use Magical Device (Rank 2) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Use Magical Device (Rank 3) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Intelligence (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Leg Shot (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Intelligence (Rank 1) Enhancement: Mechanic (Rog) - Rapid Fire (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Shield of Whirling Steel (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Tempest (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Reaction (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Reaction (Rank 2) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Reaction (Rank 3) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Whirling Blades (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Dodge (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Dodge (Rank 2) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Improved Dodge (Rank 3) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Haste Boost (Rank 1) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Haste Boost (Rank 2) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Haste Boost (Rank 3) Enhancement: Tempest (Rgr) - Dexterity (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Far Shot (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Sneak Attack (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Sniper Shot (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Stealthy (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Stealthy (Rank 2) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Stealthy (Rank 3) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Faster Sneaking (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Faster Sneaking (Rank 2) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Faster Sneaking (Rank 3) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Damage Boost (Rank 1) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Damage Boost (Rank 2) Enhancement: Deepwood Stalker (Rgr) - Damage Boost (Rank 3)
With all that ^^ you get an increased sneak attack and point blank shot range of an extra 19 meters. It's far enough to target the guy in the back (imp. precise shot), Leg shot him with the first shot, and then pew pew everything to death before it gets to you. Throw in a sniper shot, which will render at least the critter you initially shot (if it's still alive) vulnerable to sneak attacks for 4 seconds. Iirc that's another two volleys from your repeater doing (with enhancements) +9d6 sneak attack damage. On each of 6 bolts. 9 if you include the initial volley.
Really though, I play with the enhancements all the time. A tweak here and a tweak there and it can almost one shot anything with a decent great crossbow.
WILL save sucks hardcore, but things generally die before they get in casting range anyways.
Try it out on lamma when they open it back up. I've done a successful halfling version for the healing Dmarks, but I really like the invisibility for free.
It's not perfect, but it is fun to play. Especially if you like the colorful numbers floating above critters heads.
Thanks for the build listing.
I already rolled mine as a Drow, but that shouldn't matter right ?
I already have a bunch of bows in my TR cache, since this toon was a Bardcher 14bard/4rngr/2rogue in the previous life, so I would like to use bows and not xbows. I have a Silver bow in my TR cache when I get to lvl 8.
I do see the value in having a pet for door openings and stuff.
I have never played a ranged Ranger build before. I have done an Arti to lvl 20, but never ranger so I am not familiar with the Ranger enhancement trees.
I wondered why you don't use any of the Arcane Archer tree? I thought those special arrows (Terror, Paralyzing, Slaying) were very popular with Rangers.
Any race will do and drow elf is as good as any. if you're going to use bows, then there's really no reason to splash in arty as they conjure bolts and not arrows. That right there is the reason \I didn't dip into the AA tree. AA enhancements say things like "Any bow you equip..." or "Your arrows gain...". You can still go with a similar split, just switch some of the points around, Although, getting to the good stuff in AA will suck up a decent part of your available ap's.
If it were me, and this is just personal preference, and I was going to go with the AA tree at all, I would go pure ranger. The 5th core enhancement gives +2 Dexterity and +20% Doubleshot chance. And let's be honest, when you're going pew....pew....pew with a bow (instead of pewpewpew...pewpewpew with a repeater) you need all the doubleshot chances you can get your fingers on. Again, this is just my personal preference. I'm sure there are others out there that could point you in the direction of a good bow wielding ranger build. Best of luck to you!![]()
MalkavianX - Thanks for all the information. One nice thing about the enhancements is I can try AA for a while and switch to DWS for a while with the only cost being Plat.
I have read that the DWS tree give more DPS, but I have not confirmed it.
I will also look on the Ranger forum and maybe take pieces out of builds and try them.
Another concern is that I didn't know which ranger feats to take, in what order, to make sure I am giving my ranged DPS the best chance. I am going to follow your build as far as the Feats for Ranger.
Since you've already TRed, rather than listing a specific build, I'll instead provide some generic suggestions instead.
First off, rog 14 is pretty blah, so I recommend a rog 13 / rgr 6 / <splash> 1 or 12/6/2 split, depending on what class you decide to splash. Since you're NG, pally or monk is not an option, so a brief rundown of your other options:
- Ftr: extra feat(s), extra action boost
- Barb: +10% run speed, +3 Power Atk enhs, 4 uses of Rage
- Cleric or FvS: Div Might, Smite Foe, access to Emp Heal (Rejuv Cocoon FTW!); lvl 2 gets you Smite Weakness & Wall of Steel (+10 PRR)
- Druid: Beguile, Bestial Nature, access to Emp Heal; lvl 2 gets you Flight, Vengeful Hunter, doublestrike action boost
- Arty: Rapid Reload, lvl 1 spells (Conjure Bolts)
Feats: here's what would be on my wishlist.
- Melee: Power Atk, Cleave/GC, Improved Crit, GTWF (DEX 17)
- Ranged: Point Blank Shot, IC:Ranged, Imp Prec Shot (DEX 19), Combat Archery (DEX 21)
- Generic DPS: Precision, Imp Sneak Atk (DEX 21), Overwhelming Crit (STR 23 but going away in U23)
- Survivability: Dodge bonuses (part or all of Dodge/Mobility/Spring Atk); Deflect Arrows
- Rog bonus feats: Imp Evasion & Opportunist
For the sake of convenience, let's presume a ftr splash @ lvl 9 on a 13/6/1 split. Let's also presume you plan to play this build after U23 goes live and the GC & STR pre-reqs on Overwhelming Crit goes away. So I would do something like this: PBS (1), Precision (3), Dodge (6), IC:Pierce (9), IC:Ranged (ftr 1), Deflect Arrows or Mobility (12), GTWF (15), IPS (18), OC (21), ISA (24), CA (27). If you want something more melee-focused, I would take PA/CL/GC instead of Precision/Dodge/Mobility. If you choose to splash something other than ftr, drop the lvl 12 feat and move one of the Imp Crits to there.
Enhancements: there's a lot of room for customization here, so experiment until you find what you like best. I would definitely recommend picking up the lvl 3 core Tempest enh for +10% offhand proc; and would also recommend taking the lvl 6 core DWS enh (Sniper Shot / Exposing Strike - which you pick depends on whether you melee or shoot more often). I also think it's worth putting at least 6 APs into AA for Conjure Arrows, an imbue (I usually go with acid or shock), and Morphic Arrows. If you choose to use daggers, you'll definitely want Knife Spec (T5 Assassin enh); otherwise it's up to you which top-tier enhs to go for. Killer (from DWS or Assassin) + Execute or Hunter's Mercy is kinda nice, but expensive to take; so it makes sense only to pick them up if you choose to specialize in that PrE.

Thank you very much for this summary. As I said, I have a bunch of bows in my TR cache so I think I will pass on Arti splash. I still want to try a ranged first, melee second type of thing. I will probably experiment with some AA tree and DWS. I am only going to level 20, to see if I like ranged DPS, then I will TR again into another ranger type build.
Thanks to you all for your comments and patience with a player still learning.
