From the Harper thread; we will be looking to add this as a reward for favor (Harper favor is the most obvious choice here) for Update 24.

Not at all.
In order to get 500PDK favor you need to run motu quests, challenges and wheloon quests.
The only shadowfail conspiracy quest pack is bundled with PDK, so the only people that would benefit from that reward are people who begged other people for guest passes. So extremally low amount of people.

Oh hey it's the weekend popcorn thread! Some people just aren't ever going to be happy. There are people in this thread who 5 years ago the first post I ever read sounds exactly the same as the ones in this thread, they have literally never posted anything but those kinds of posts... Over years they accumulate like dirt on a filter. Becoming more in number and volume, just like heavy sludge accumulates at the bottom of the bucket. This forum needs a backflush. Blast all the accumulated sediment out. They can always hang out over in "the grease trap".

Monk, Half Orc, Artificer, Bladeforged, FvS, Harper Agent, PDK, Shadar Kai, Epic Destinies, Drow... One of these is not like... er no wait... All of these are exactly like the others.

Claiming this is something new and over the top is just "oh look at me I'm complaining again just to complain" hyperbole. It's worse than that, because it's clearly not new, and they clearly KNOW it's not new, and yet here they are bold faced trying to dress it up and parade it around like some new Evil they've found out. Pretending it's a big deal anyway out of boredom or just shameless dishonesty.

I said that this would happen back when Turbine introduced the new enhancements a good while back and I was told that it would never happen.

What they are offering now does not look terribly OP, but give it some time. People will rationalize this and then within the next 6 months Turbine will be selling really OP enhancements and the all is fine crowd will be there to defend the action. I will wait for people to bash me and say that I am wrong about this as well, but I was right about them selling enhancements when they first released the new version of them.

Being right i guess is the only thing that matters....like the other guy said...this is what people want. shrug. I love ddo, I don't like turbine...so I will simply buy what needs to be bought and move on enjoying my character. Seems to me a less stressful way of looking at things.

This bothered me a bit. But then, while talking it over with a friend of mine (who, like me, does a little indie game dev in his spare time), I changed my view. Let me paraphrase what he told me.



Harper is going to add some rather unique and cool usage to the game, and increase viability of builds - the core of Dungeons & Dragons. If you play enough to recognize that you aren't "optimized" without Harper, you've been playing long enough you should give Turbine money. Sorry, but this isn't Pay2Win. It's just Pay to Play.

I was saying that not being aware of how much the developer of a free-to-play MMO is giving you, for free (patches, content, etc); ignoring all of that and saying that a new, completely optional feature which is paygated is scummy and whatnot - that's crazy. Whether you realize it or not, that's some degree of entitlement you need to watch out for.

I think from what I've seen on Lam/the feeds etc, harper and the others released will most be balanced, they actually felt underpowered vs some of the current class trees as well, but, it'll give me a tree option outside of the ones I hate (barbarian class pres, I hate all of them, because I do, for no reason better than I hate the class).

100% agree with what this person said. If you love the game, and you're at the point of having played long enough that you feel these are needed... at some point if you're at the 100s of hours played... maybe you should look at paying the people that gave you the game you love to ***** about?

You are given a basic game free - they let you earn the things you are not paying for. You are not entitled to everything. This is why they have VIP, the VIPs are entitled to everything, and given points to allow them to make their pick on saving for packs/other when they drop sub, or to buy other shinies while they have their subs.

Yes, I like the idea of them putting these in as favor rewards (it'd be awesome really, it'd be something that would be worth it as a server favor unlock) they already said that they may open it up as a favor unlock later on - which I 100% support and would go for. I would prefer it over the store only option.

Turbine needs money - if no one pays into the game, no one will be playing. Period. You can scream, kick and rage over everything in the store - but at the end of the day the people that develop the game you're playing, that give customer service by phone or in game etc - they need to get paid and the servers won't run without cash to maintain them.

I'm happy this game got raised as a F2P (admit it, if it were full out P2P, you'd be sub or nothing as is in WoW and other MMOs) but they still need money coming in or they will go belly up.

You can earn everything in game, I know plenty of people that have done so, it is a hell of a grind but can be done. They are not forcing you to pay money - it is your choice, time or money.

Spending money on the game is the least of my worries. In my life I have worked for everything I own and am not looking for some DDO welfare. What troubles me is what introducing this tree means.

Just look at BF and WF. Both are robots that have extremely similar traits, but one gets a tree that grants auto reconstruct. If this was not in the tree, BF would have hardly sold. This is what I fear with the selling of pre’s. The Harper tree is fine, but if Turbine really wants to sell these they are going to have to be more powerful an option than what we currently have.

So there are two problems. Turbine will continue to sell power creep items in the store as well as nerfing things in game because they are to OP, then they turn around and sell something that is just as OP in the store.

Again, I am not stressed about Turbine “stealing” my $5 if I do buy a tree, I am upset that this is the model for making money. Unfortunately this is their answer to a declining population. Don’t try to retain and advertise for new people; just gouge the players that remain. As more and more walk away it will only get worse.

This game is a business, It takes money to run. If you dont want to pay your monthly membership in support of this game you love to hate so much then stop complaining that you have to pay for some extras... and like other dude said on page one... You dont have to buy everything that is published.
