    Default Shadar Kai mechanic

In short: How would it work?

    1. Shadar Kai has a fairly weak racial tree (although the cores are quite fun and I've seen rogues escape from nasty situations with them), but it's more or less for the free 15 levels (1-14 is a nightmare, nowadays, as heroics are nearly dead, at least here on Argo) and +1 intelligence. Shadar Kai also has +2 sneak attack dice and 'nothing is hidden' is an easy button for trapping.

    2. The character I want to do this on has a plethora of repeaters and crossbows to use, and plenty of helpful past lives (3 ranger, 2 artificer, 1 rogue, 1 monk).

    3. With the new harper tree, it's easy to splash 12 AP into it and get intelligence for both to-hit and damage, faster than what a rogue mechanic can get in their own tree. Harper also has intelligence in the cores and in the tree itself, as well as +ranged power. This tree is a perfect match for the mechanic.

Pretty generic, but the crossbow damage + sneak attack + added effects + improved evasion + high umd sounds like a lot of fun, to me.

What is your plan to keep your repeaters fed with bolts?

You will have to spend an extra feat for Rapid Reload as a heads up since it's not auto granted. Also, you will get your light and heavy repeater feats from the Mechanic Tree, so you will have to invest some AP there.

Bleh, I forgot about the bolts. Having to carry around a dozen quivers full of house D bolts is a major pain. Screw this idea, I'll make a bladeforged artificer instead.

Aren't Conjure Bolts scrolls fixed with coming update?

Honestly, I don't see why the mechanic -- an engineer and trapsmith by definition -- can't manufacture their own ammo. If ever they redid the mechanic tree (which they should) that would have to be in the core enhancements.

EDIT: Wow, I just saw that in the release notes. Yay!

As to the mechanic tree, there's no point in being a mechanic without spending points in it, which, obviously, has some good choices for crossbows (although I wish great crossbows gained more benefits, since they could probably be ridiculous damage if made right). Although, on the whole, I think the tree needs some work done to it.

That doesn't stop me from wanting to play it, though.
