    Default Ranger12/Fighter6/Rogue2

    Hi Folkes

    Returning player here

I have a lvl 16 elf, ranger/rouge/wiz, & looking to just build a ranger with some trap/open locks style play.

Skills, id like to have mostly in ranged, then traps/locks/spot etc, and then melee.

    What are the current recommendations?

Am going to do a respec, including classes

    I came up with this...

what are peoples thoughts on this? is there anything that i should/need to be changing?

i didnt take UMD, ive never used it, ive taken heal instead to revive fellow team mates?
the other thing im wondering, str/dex. which one would be the preferred to put points into? for the class levels and the ability points?

Is fighter worth it, or just go ranger 18? (i dont have access to the monk)

one of the bonuses of going Kensei is the power boost to STR. You lose this by going DEX-based. Also, the Ranger's Ram's Might buff is not wholly utilized on a dex build. You get Bow STR as a feat automatically with ranger levels. You can focus completely on elven weapons with a dex build but you can do that with a STR build as well.

Power critical is not a good feat--why are you taking it?

Also, are planning to go into epics or TR again?

Your most important skill is UMD (also Search and Disable). with Rogue levels you can max it. Spread out when you take Rogue so that your skill points from it are better used, such as taking it around level 12 or 13 (or later). Rangers get evasion at 9 so there is no rush for rogue there.

Instead of swim, for example, you want to max out bluff and diplomacy. YOu can bluff enemies while ranging them without losing anything in the attack sequence.

Get a higher CON, lower your INT, lower your dex and raise your STR...egad there are a lot of changes needed in there.

Going STR based is better than dex based?

I prob will go to epics

Why is UMD the most important?

Will go for bluff and dip.

Will try again and see how i go, tnx

Well, STR has a couple benefits...
Adds to damage without needing specific enhancements.
It's easier to boost: Ram's Might, Rage (spell)/Primal Scream, Madstone Rage(*2), psionic STR from kensei or some rare items.
If you ever melee, STR gives bonus to tactics like trip/stun.
23 base STR is required for Overwhelming Critical epic feat.

Meanwhile DEX requires special enhancements to add damage, and then only works with select weapons.
But, ignoring STR gives you one stat less to worry about, so it's good for some builds, also 21 base DEX is needed for Combat Archery epic feat.

UMD allows you to use some restricted items (eg. a chaotic damage sword that requires you to be chaotic, or have ~20 UMD to bypass the block), but more importantly allows you to use scrolls and wands of other classes. Mostly heal scrolls, and possibly some buff scrolls/wands from wizard, like shield, greater heroism, stone skin...

IMHO getting both bluff and diplomacy seems overkill unless you have lots of skill points to spare, I'd focus on one, probably bluff... but then again, maybe I'm doing it wrong: I manage my aggro by uh, like..., mostly running around the field so they can't hit me even if they want to, or killing them one by one so they can't hit me because they're dead; instead of doing some mind tricks to make them not want to hit me. But with bluff I could squeeze in some more damage and utility, that could come in handy I guess.

BTW, you mentioned "heal [skill] to revive fellow team mates", if you meant to use healing kits on someone with -[couple] HP but not dead yet... a much better choice is to just cast a cure spell on them, be it your own ranger spell, or one from wand(by the way, as a ranger you can use some of the cure wands without UMD! Carry one.), scroll, maybe even a heal spell; or in fact a temporary HP like from greater heroism would also work. And if they are already dead heal won't help... but UMD to use a raise dead scroll would.
That said, heal is not completely bad now - it'll increase power of your own cure spells, so if you have spare points, go for it.

    A few comments:
    • The "sweet spots" for Kensei are ftr 8 (GWF+Keen Edge) and ftr 12 (Power Surge). If you're not going for them, Kensei is a pretty blah tree, IMHO. So unless you're going for defensive stance in Stalwart Defender, I would consider a different split with fewer ftr lvls.
    • STR-based is always going to be better DPS: partly because there are more STR bonuses than DEX; and partly because it opens up Overwhelming Crit. At a minimum, you'll have Ram's Might (+2 STR) and can drink Rage pots (+2); later you'll also have access to Primal Scream (+5 STR, replaces Rage pots). You could also acquire Madstone Boots and Titan's Grip for temp STR bonuses. If you choose to go ftr 12, Power Surge is +8 STR; or if you take a divine spash instead, you'll have access to Div Might.
    • If you decide to stick with DEX-based, then you don't need so much base STR; Power Atk (base STR 13) is the only feat you might really want.

    Cheers guys for the help

here is what i came up with , i did go with a dex build as i just use long swords/rapiers and long bows. also for the dodge bonus
i went to 14 with the ranger so i could get access to the cure critical wounds, rogue with the rest for the extra skill points.

If you're going to rgr 14, you might as well take an extra rgr lvl: that gets you 2nd lvl 4 spell slot (FoM) and a 4th Favored Enemy. I would drop SotR, Toughness, and probably Extend (unless you take Least Shadow DM); instead I'd take IC:Pierce, Quicken, and Emp Heal. I would also dump WIS & CHA for CON 14 to make up for dropping Toughness.

Another possibility is rgr 15 / ftr 4 / rog 1: skill pts are tighter, but you gain 3 extra feats to play with. One example:

Since this is an LR, I didn't put a lot of thought into optimizing leveling order; in particular, you may need to stagger out the ftr lvls more to max out your skills. Gtr Shadow DM + Extend provides 4 uses of Displacement, which at level cap will last over 22 minutes: 6 secs * 28 caster lvl * 2 from Extend * 4 uses = 1,344 secs total. Base Dodge will be 8%: 3% Dodge feat + 3% Imp Dodge enh + 2% Mobility. Add a 10% Dodge item and you're at 18%. You can goose that up to 20% by taking Spring Atk at lvl 24. Other feat options include Power Atk and Finesse.

I play a similar split atm. It is

    1 Rog/ 6 Ftr/ 13 Rgr Elf

This toon is remarkably survivable. More than I thought. I still have to improve on self healing but other than that, his most viable defense is Displacement from Dragonmark of Shadow. I chose Extend Spell and at lvl. 28 that means over 5 min Displacement. Together with Chimera's CRown you got 5 Displacement uses, which is more than enough. For me at least.

This toon is a hybrid for TWF/ranged.

The 6 Ftr, however, granted me a benefit in an unintended way. I wanted to fit in Kensai and max. doublestrike within its limits (Killer and Skirmishers Bracers as main boost). But it turned out to be too expensive regarding APs. So I took the 6 Ftr lvl.s just for the feat choices. I skipped on a 2nd Rog lvl., because I really hate redundancy. 13 Rgr do not grant anything bigger than 12, except CL for your limitted cure spells.

In retrospect I think, I could dumb the draginmark and then got more AP for kkensai, but displacement is so powerful and gs clickies are still not easy to get in abundance (shards are bottleneck), so everything your character can do without relying on items is a plus. Anyway, human may be a better choice since you got heal amp. to boost your low cure spells a bit.
