Freeze upon character creation

I've searched the forums and found similar threads, but none solved.

I have played DDO before, and now I've reinstalled the game. I can play on my previously created chars, but once I try to create a new one the game freezes. I can get through choosing classes and race, but when I click on "Look" button I encounter the first freeze. It lets go after ~2 mins, and as I'm choosing feats the game crashes down and says that the connection's been lost.

Any idea how to fix that?

As many ppl had this problem, I'll reply to my own thread, sorry.

I've downloaded ddo through steam, and had it turned on in game, once I've turned it off the problem dissapeared. Maybe someone will use it.

I'm having this problem too.

Only it won't let me play DDO without Steam running, so I don't know how to apply this workaround you suggested.

I have this problem also. Did you try opening task manager and clicking the processes tab and make sure to close steam out before running DDO launcher?

similar problem here. No steam used, but game locks up at last stage of character creation "look". I left it alone for 5 minutes +, Task Mgr just shows "not responding" nothing else open or running in the background except DDO. Tried different race\class\gender combos, same problem. Tried rebooting computer.

I am a returning player, but gone for 5-6 years and seems like my old Turbine account is gone. Turbine says it is sending email to with UN\PW to my email account, but I receive nothing, same email as before.

Any suggestions?

After getting through all that, try getting ddo preloader and trying to launch the game witht hat. A lot of people with long load times, double log ins, login-disconnect, etc. have found preloader fixes the problem.

Tried this. Still won't fix the problem. I log onto Cannith and start creating a custom Human Paladin. Everything works fine until I go to edit my character's look. At that point, selecting any options has no effect on the character's appearance, and while I can go back and forth through character creation menus, if I try to alt+tab or Ctrl+Alt+Delete, my computer freezes and I have to restart it.

I've tried it both with the native launcher and Preloader V2. Neither works, both encounter the same problem: I can click on any options in the Look menu, but none of them works. So basically I can't finish my character.
