He was guild recruiting in the harbor 2 days ago. I was on a lowbie running with my son and saw him and sent him a tell saying "OMG the legend has returned!", got no answer, realized I wasn't on Llewndyn, and was sad. Llewndyn is a better character than my first life. Marginally.
So... my wife and I start and run a guild since the game goes live.... buy some land in the woods to retire on and need to add phone lines and all services which takes us offline since the beginning of june. We log in tonight and see our guild has been taken over.
Coincidence? Maybe, but the advice I am reading here is pretty underhanded. In our case we leveled our guild for years before letting others in.
Here is a little advice.
Don't take over other peoples guilds, you never know who you're going to **** off.

Or, you know, let your guildies know what is going on beforehand and make arrangements with one of your guildies you trust to lead and promoting him/her while you are gone and give it back after you are able to return, so that a guild isn't stuck in some sort of difficult situation while waiting for you to come back. So many people today are leaving the game without notice it's not unreasonable for people to think they've been abandoned.
The advice here is not underhanded. There is a reason usurping control is a thing in this game, and in the rare cases where guild leaders return usually it's worked out peacefully. No one has told him to take the guild and boot the inactive people out, that is underhanded.

Wow - Your Guildies usurped fast!
You've had said Guild for 8 YEARS! And the instant you're offline for more than a month you get usurped?
And the usurper doesn't give you leadership back when you finally log back on?
You might want to be more careful about who you give officership to next time - just saying.

When I go on vacation, I lock the house up, and then make arrangements with someone I know and give her the key to come over and keep things running. I don't leave the house open for anyone to move in. You had this option with the guild too, to 'hand the keys' to someone you trusted in the guild, and have them handed back when you got out.
What happened to you is extreme and an abuse of the system, however, it does not make any of the advice in this chat underhanded or the system inherently bad. We are also advising a player who has been part of his guild for SEVEN YEARS, he didn't just up and insinutate himself to steal anything. He's honoring his missing guildmates by keeping it going. I understand that you had a bad experience with it, but you have to understand that in most cases it's used properly on long abandoned guilds that would just die out, stranding people who worked really hard on them every bit as much as guild leaders. People leave and abandon guilds, leaders also.
While I care that your case is clearly a somewhat extreme one, there is nothing wrong with those who are left behind picking up the pieces of abanoned guilds to keep something they value alive. Even if they were in only for a short while, they do still contribute and are part of something, they are not mere squatters. I would prefer to see him give back leadership gracefully since you clearly didn't intend abandonment, but apparently that isn't going to happen here. While it's clearly an abuse of a mechanic in THIS case, that doesn't outweigh all the other cases of guilds that have gone on for years and get abandoned that their members are all equally vested in both in terms of mechanics (renown) and emotional/social ties.
An automated e-mail would be nice, but how would it have helped in your case at all? You stated you didn't have internet access. So the e-mail wouldn't have reached you anyway. And most players DO try to reach their missing friends first.

Let me clarify... an internet service provider. It is not feasible or even very possible to connect using a cell phone beyond simple facebook or email applications (assuming there is a good signal), even with a tether. The bandwidth required for an MMO requires a high speed service provider. Lets not get all legal and "letter of the law" here. I said until my internet was installed, it almost goes without saying I had a cell phone considering that everyone I know has one. The keyword being "installed". Let's not get into the semantics here.
this^ recruiting will be a fustrating scene;just know its nothin personal when players join and quit the same day.Besides personal friends and freeplayers ,I foud One great member in recruitin over last 2 yrs. Most blind invites look at a small roster and small ship and quit without a word.Only real problem is losing the renown bonus for trying to recruit and fail(players who join and quit the same day ,lower your renown bonus still, and I'd really like that addressed)
I believe that there was supposed to be a minimum time in guild limit for a character to contribute to renown decay or recent departures BUT that's never seemed to work properly!
It is a personal bugbear of mine that people will ask to join a guild, join a guild then leave within minutes {sometimes seconds!} when they see the Guild Roster!
It's also a fact that most newbies leave game within a week anyway - having to boot them when they go inactive a month after joining the guild having logged on maybe 2 or 3 times in the first 3 days is also annoying.
Especially as you've got this horrid guild list with only 1 or 2 players ever online and a bunch of people who haven't played in days or weeks throughout the majority of that period which newcomers to the guild see and think "Hey this Guild's dead".
Some Guilds combat this by simply inviting everyone and hoping enough stick but for the rest of us it's a long hard haul - One I pretty much gave up on on Cannith years ago!
