Default Poor man's staff build - Non-Lawful, Human, 13Rog/5Cle/2Ftr (Updated)

The zeus build looks fun, but unfortunately I'd need to LR out my barb levels to be able to switch to lawful alignment for monk/pally. Ended up going intermediate 18/2 Rog/Ftr till I can get the cleric in the next couple days.

Taking some notes from the battlerager, kensei warpriest and other staff builds - curious to see if this would work. It might actually exist somewhere, but I've been looking at so many lately they've become a blur.

    Any input would be appreciated:

Probably won't do EE, mostly EH attempting to get xp and gear.

Generic concept is the acrobat line, plus warpriest's ameliorating strikes, plus some kensei fun (and feats)
    Thief for acrobat line, UMD/skills
Cleric for self heals/utility and ameliorating strikes from warpriest line
Fighter for feats and some items from the kensei line

As usual AP's are tight. Breakdown below.

Was originally not going to finish the THF line and go mobility line or tactics (CE/iTrip/iFeint/Stunning). Ended up having minimal utility - usually wouldn't land and broke the attack chain.

Base HP is concerning - but ends up playing out pretty well in EH or solo eveningstar quests on hard.
Only took empower healing - not sure if other metamagics needed

Thought was the attack speed/doublestrike with some dodge - could use advice on changes to improve saves, PRR/survivability for a 2nd lifer with poor gear.

Weapon focus is an absolute waste of a feat, since you can't go deep enough on the fighter tree with only two fighter levels, so at best you're wasting a feat and 2 AP to get +2 hit and +1 dam. I'd swap that for early stunning blow.

    Combat expertise --> ITHF
    Improved Trip --> GTHF

The improvement to your glancing blows is a very significant boost, and shouldn't be overlooked. Alternatively, drop all three and play around with your feats. Mobility, Precision, Resilience, and Sap are pretty solid pickups for the fighter feat, and those plus Quicken, Toughness, or a dragonmark are all viable for the two remaining feats.

You can completely dump dex(skipping dodge altogether), or drop it to 12, and still be able to grab dodge at level 3. Drop it to 11 and you can swap the position of empower heal and dodge and save an extra point. My recommendation: start 18 Str/12 Dex/14 Con/14 Int/10 Wis/8 Cha

Side note: Are you even able to do this LR? If you went straight barb, you won't be able to LR three non-barb classes until all your barb levels are cleared from your level queue.

Thanks, was late so really glad someone else eyeballed it - really wish i could change the thread name since going 13 rogue seemed much more beneficial with the knockdown immune and 2nd special ability rather than 3 fighter feats.

I was a previous blitz, so only changing out 6 barb levels - so can my cleric levels may be a bit haphazard. Really hate how you can't see a summary of existing build progression (or if it exists, not sure where to find it).

    WF, agreed.

Reading a lot on the forums seems quite a few usually drop the THF line completely for other feats. But apparently there have been a few changes with glancing blows both on qstaff and qstaff with cleave.

Apparently improved feint sucks in terms of timing/animation too - which is a bummer, getting a free 7d6 sneak + mods would be nice.

So that lets me toss WF, CE, iTrip, iFeint

Could go dodge > mobility > spring attack > whirlwind for 3 extra feats, 5 extra dodge and a 4W cleave. Seems expensive in terms of feats and i'm going to have plenty of clicky's/active attacks.

In terms of stats - with this approach I was fine for skills. So could drop dex to 12 but possibly bump con.

How bout the below? For 6AP I can get +2 to all saves via Divine Disciple... seems worth it.

    Default poor mans staff

Looks like good advice so far:

    Just some more thoughts:

At higher levels plan on having a deception item. This will help you grab sneak damage when you wouldn't normally be able to get it. I would say its almost mandatory on a build like this.

Plan out your AP well. There are a lot of teasers but stay focused on your DPS. The Acrobat Offense and the Warpriest Defenses will be sweet.

Don't forget the extra 15% Speed that you will gain from Qstaffs in the Acrobat tree. It does make a difference.

Keep your eye on Doublestrike as well. This a THF build, but you can get a decent doublestrike %. Zeus is getting over 70%.

Think in terms of Fortification bypass as well to get your crits in.

Think in terms of armor with Light Armor. In Order of Importance are Displacement-> Blur-> Dodge-> PRR-> AC. I have some good armor and maybe even some good Staves for you if you need. Unless you can get your AC over 160ish it's pretty much mediocre. So a great Dodge/PRR combo is what you are looking for

I'm not sure how you are going to use your +20 to go from Blitz yo this. Do you remember if you followed the Blitz exactly?.

Thanks battle. Again, really wish there was a leveling history or something because apparently I backloaded the barb levels and am now a proud owner of an 18rog/2Ftr. I had banked points from the past so I stubbornly bought a +5 to get it. In hindsight it might have been better to just TR into a bladeforged and get on the zeus train.

Stubborn though, so 18/2 now and 13/5/2 in 3 days.

With no warpriest that 'opened up' 26 AP
    Currently
    12 in Human - 20% amp, 3xTHF, +1 Str
    7 in Assasin - +2 SA die
    0 in mechanic
42 in thief acrobat - full qstaff line, +2 str, trip DC and sweeping strikes (cleave trip), plus of course the atk and doublestrike
19 in Kensei - dodge attack, +3 dodge, +3 to tactical DCs

Could most likely use some tweaking on the AP.

I've got Sireth from the box, rhal's might from way back and will hopefully pick up a DR breaker somehow.
Using whisperchain as armor for the concealment (just got it yesterday, better than my previous DT).

Overall pretty poorly equipped but just need to run some of the new stuff.

In general it looks ok even with this - hp are low at 509, saves are low and my only self healing is scrolls/pots (UMD is also a bit lower). Healing part will improve with the 5 cle.

Now, for 18/2(which ordinarily may well have been better off as a straight 20 point rogue, but I guess for +5 LR purposes this is as good as it gets), you have a bit more room to play around, but you coincidentally want to address the loss in self-sustain from warpriest. I'd dive deep into mechanic to get a slightly more effective UMD/wands/scrolls, as well as going all the way on the human tree:

On the stats: 16 con is very nice and certainly helps the build a lot. I'm a big fan of rogues being able to do what rogues do best, though, and those four build points could be put to better use in either Int, where you get skills and a better trapping modifier(probably more useful in the 13/5/2 build than the 18/2), or Cha, where you get a slightly better UMD and if you have warpriest, the Cha modifier feeds directly into your Str, which is awesome.

Four other options for rog 13 split:
    • Rog 13 / cleric 7: the 2 extra cleric lvls get you RS bursts and lvl 4 spells (DW, CCW). With only 7 cleric lvls and Emp Heal, your bursts won't do much actual healing, but the neg lvl / stat dmg removal is nice.
    • Rog 13 / cleric 4 / barb 3: you keep Ameliorating Strike but lose higher-lvl spells; but the heavy barb splash gets you +10% run speed, +3 Power Atk, 4 uses of Rage, and Supreme Cleave.
    • Rog 13 / cleric 4 / druid 3: the druid splash gets you Ram's Might, Shillelagh, Doublestrike action boost, Vengeful Hunter, and Fatal Harrier. APs are pretty tight: 32 APs in Acro for Staff Spec, 22 APs in Warpriest for AS, 14 APs in NW = 68 APs, leaving 12 leftover. [Note that you can't switch to a 3-class split like this until after you get rid of your barb lvls.]
    • Rog 13 / cleric 4 / wiz 3: EK enhs like +doublestrike, Imp Mage Armor / Shield, Arcane Barrier (should stack w/Imp Defensive Roll).

So I've played around for a few hours today doing first time runs in some eveningstar quests and some underdark quests -

Even under geared, it definitely plays better than the blitz. Fewer required pre-battle prep and a smaller action cycle. I have 3 tactics - trip, stunning blow, and the cleave trip. Not sure on the DPS - but really feels like its much more. Bigger, more frequent hits specifically.

In the level 21-24 quests the stunning blow just isn't landing, the cleave trip isn't landing but the normal trip is - at least on casters. More importantly, I rarely have time to use multiple - the ones that hit hard, I can't get it to land. The ones that don't - they die too quick to make it worthwhile.

I might toss them all out unless I can get one of those vertigo rings - either the +10 to trip/stun or +5 to all. Then I might think about it again.

For non-boss/trash/normal stuff - heal scrolls are generally fine. Things that hit hard - needs a healer, hireling or need to bail to heal scroll.

So far been really fun to play with. I do want the defense and ameliorating strike from warpriest though. 3 fighter or 14 rogue don't do a lot but 5th cleric gets 3rd lvl spells. Although in all honesty I might not cast any spells and just use the strike/passives.
    re - unbongwah
In regards to class split -
    • Barb - staying away from barb for now
    • Cle 7 vs Ftr 2 - I just like Fighters, even though I'm barely using anything from the kensei line - cheaper haste boost, dodge, dodge attack
    • Druid looked interesting but did seem to be very very tight on AP but the doublestrike action boost was attactive. I'm already neutral too.
    • Haven't checked out EK line at all, will do so. Edit: Checked it out, probably wouldn't go that direction. Not quite enough oomph - and then a few more low level spells. With that said, never played a wiz before...

    re - SovTyphoon

In regards to the 13/5/2 split - The dodge in the kensei is expensive but trying to up damage mitigation which may/may not be more important than the other 10% amp.

After playing for just a day - doubting the investment into the tactics DC - I'm spending 9 pts (12 with the cleave trip), a feat and then 3 (or 6) more in LD for something that rarely hits and interrupts the attack. It would be good to get at least 1 good CC but not sure what I should sacrifice for it.

I hadn't really looked at mechanic - 75% more healing is sweet... is it worth 14AP though? Thinking about that one - possibly take the tactics points over there.

    Could go this route

    Code:
Enhancement: Human - Human Versatility: Damage Boost (Rank 1)
Enhancement: Human - Human Adaptability: Strength (Rank 1)

Skill points were fine - not sure the extra 20 would be needed.

So far I've needed a +15 item, but have been able to do all the traps and locks on a lvl 25 quest. I really DON'T want to be a trapper, so if points get tough I can dump it eventually.

Cha might be a consideration - but the 3 umd from mechanic might cover it.

Still 18/2 but still plan on LR'ing to 5cle. Have 3 days to revisit it though.

Thanks for the feedback, really helps.

So the build is doing well for still lacking any end game gear. I've got it up to 28 (27, just waiting to max a 2nd martial to take 28) and have run most of the new content and raids.

In hindsight the stats probably could have been optimized a bit more, but still not sure what I'm going to end up with in terms of end game/final stat items.

Not sure I needed the 5 cleric - I never use cleric spells, I might toss on a prayer/bless/aid/prot evil before a boss fight but that's even rare. Nightshield is convenient, but not really necessary.

Thinking about dropping Ameliorating strikes. Its nice, but without a devotion item yet or a lot of positive SP its only doing about 80 hp per 15 seconds. Its on my normal rotation, but it also costs 13 AP to get to it. I could drop inflame line (9AP) and AM strikes to free up 13 AP. Not 100% sure what ends up being better:

Assassin for 2SA die for 7 AP
    Human for 10%amp, 6%glancing for 9 AP

Any thoughts? The healing/restoration is nice but not amazing. It is nice that its a group buff and on a raid its 12x80 for free. Worth dropping?

Any thoughts on end game gear? Most likely going to aim towards the zeus build gear, but doubt I'd get all of it any time soon.
    Any bridge suggestions?

I wasn't particularly feeling the Ameliorating Strikes for this build to begin with, but it seemed to be the linchpin for your build. If you want to drop it, the cleric levels are honestly a little bit of a waste overall.

As to which to transition to, it kind of depends on whether your build is more focused on being sneaky or tanky:
SA die are obviously good if you can either bluff, deceive, or stun your way to activating sneak attacks.
Heal amp and glancing blows are nice if you're drawing some aggro and can use both the healing and the extra procs.

The warpriest t1 and t2 passives are nice, and the radiant +75% scrolls (4) is nice, and the +2 saves for cheap (6) is nice.

But those only take 2 cleric levels I think.

The ameliorating strikes might be even nicer once I get some bloody coms and can upgrade sireth to get a red slot for 80-120 devotion. Plus, they do heal the entire group for free every 15 secs. Surprisingly I really like the lesser restore for the random poison or whatever stat damage removal. So... its "nice" but is it worth 13 AP? I think I could grab unyielding sovereignty instead for a full 'oh hell' heal every 5 min.

With all that said, its playing well. Its not invincible, but can easily solo most EH with a hireling and if I felt like it probably solo without. Does fine in a group without heals and no hireling - either raid or blitzing through a quest.

Not that kill counts mean much but usually in top couple unless running with a fed blitzer.

I'm definitely less sneaky, but run with experienced/well geared players who either grab aggro or bounce aggro that I see SA damage enough to be worthwhile.
